❤You are doing great organizing what happens to all of us in real life, difficulties! Glad you are able to share your journey with us. Welcome home to your UA-cam family.❤️🙏😘
You're right, Jeff, Mother Earth does not like to be bare. So if you don't cover her the weeds will. Old spent hay, straw, leaves, matures, sea weed, cocoa coir are all good things you can cover her with. Throw down some of your pasture seed mix from tractor supply. It's all good stuff. I've been watching Anne Marie @ Big Dreams tiny Budget since the beginning of the channel. The same with watching you. I started watching you on the trip to come see your 1 st property in Arkansas. But I started watch more and subscribed when "oitc" / "diyfferent", came to help you out and bring you Grumpy and Walter's replacement rooster. So, it's been a few years.
Other than your chickens, the culture areas are of most interest to me. You were blessed.. yes with tons of work and money too.. with area and trees to start it. Rain.. rot.. seeds.. time.. but I'm hoping to see great things.
Hi Jeff, You can use a paper towel for Coffee filter. Just left DREW. Geat yo see you both back to back. Your land looks fabulous. Grass, growing excellant SE MICHIGAN 🙏 🙏 🙏 🙏 🙏
You might be surprised at how little fertilizer you may need. My hugleculture bed has been my best place to grow, especially year 1. I think you are going to have amazing growth with whatever you decide to plant!!! Love the shout out to Ann Marie. I’m a fan her 😊
You can put down a winter cover crop now. I use a mix of Collards, Dijon radish, peas, winter wheat, rye, kale, etc. You’d get to harvest greens soon too. Your upper beds look great.
Glad to see you back on here. Interesting concept. Id think the chickens on top of those grasses would be good. They eat the grasses, add nitrogen to the soil....
Hoping the hügelkultur gardens work out wonderful. I can picture you going out and grabbing some tomatoes for sandwiches. Tomatoes and green peppers for omelets too.
man jeff they are looking fantastic ~ that's the best way to condition the ground 🍄✌ I've never used any kind of chemicals in my gardens (flowers or food)
Are you getting native grasses growing on your hugel cultur or were there grass seeds in the top soil? I watch youtube Criime Pays, Botany Does Not and he was in the Ouchita area a while back showing the native plants that grow along the river. Recently he was showing native plants in Illinois. It would be interesting to see what grows back at your place, if the land disturbance has exposed the native seed bank. I don't know if the trees in your homestead site trees are regrowth after it was all cut down at some point in the past. Maybe you know the history of the area if it used to be a farm. Areas like where my allotment garden is in Toronto were farmland with its concommitant horrendous invasive non native weeds. Annuals are not too bad but the perennials are a bitch to extirpate. Sadly Dave Brandt died in a single vehicle accident in 2023. RIP.
This grass is not normal; there are no root; they have an aggressive ryzome system that will run for miles. but you can't get rid of it. The chickens won't be able to get rid of it but they will eat it when it is young. i do recommend weedeating it down before it goes to seed.
Hi Jeff, People don't always understand with Hugelkultur it's not about the beauty of it, it's beauty is all of the good that comes out of it for your future plants such as water retention and all of the little good microcobile action going on.

It seems like you need a watch/guard dog that won't chase chickens. Have you ever had one?
