    In 1956 Hawaii was still a territory. A young girl got a foreign student scholarship to come to Oklahoma Baptist University. I met her because a high school friend of mine was her roommate. I started dating her and went with her for 3 years. In 1959 we married . That was 63 years ago.

    One thing for someone to be prepared for, especially if they'll be living in Hawaii, is that the person from outside of Hawaii will need to know that they can at least get along with the spouse's family, if not genuinely like them. You kind of touched on this, but it merits emphasizing. After all, the mainlander will not get to visit or do things with his/her extended family nearly as often as they might like. Learning to live with your spouse is challenging enough, but learning to accept and live with the entire family of in-laws with all the different personalities is on a whole different level. The difficulties could be geometrically compounded if you don't get along with them. There's already enough challenges with the perceptions and beliefs that the locals may have about mainlanders/outsiders, since not everyone can afford to travel to the mainland (besides Vegas).
    You folks are wise to recognize that you need to nurture your relationship with each other all your lives. At some point the boys will grow up and start their own families, and you don't want to have to figure out how to be husband and wife again because you invested all your energy into being parents. Being parents with total responsibility for the kids is the temporary condition. Hopefully, being husband and wife is permanent. You don't want to wake up one day wondering why you're still with the other person, or what you have in common besides the kids.

    • @HelloFromHawaii
      @HelloFromHawaii  9 місяців тому +3

      Great point about getting along with family. It's huge. Because Hawaii is so isolated, closeness of family, including in-law relations, can make or break an experience.
      And we do try to get our alone time away from the boys. It's tough, but happy that my family can watch the kids so we can get away.

    I’m from Hawaii, born & raised and part Hawaiian, I found it difficult to date foreigners the Hawaiian culture is very much about showing respect towards each other & respect especially for Kapuna/elderly & the local sense of humor & family is important & dating foreigners just didn’t fit well in that dynamic. Went back to dating locals

    • @HelloFromHawaii
      @HelloFromHawaii  9 місяців тому +1

      I agree about all of the things you mentioned that are associated with the local culture. It's an adjustment to marrying someone who isn't from Hawaii, but I'm glad my wife has made that adjustment.

    I understand this as dating someone from Hawaii. I being from the mainland and Latina with different backgrounds. I have changed and look at things differently after dating for 10 months now. I have been taking my time learning and understanding the culture because of how different it is from mine. Usually Mexican families are close as well but being raised away from relatives I didn't go up that way. This is something very different to me.

    Kualoa park! In our family it’s known as “flying dodo paper park” or “FDPP” for short. When our kids were little we got stuck in bad traffic on the Kam on our way from town to Laie to see friends. My son had an urgent need so we pulled into the park and went to the restroom building. It was a very windy December day and the toilet paper was literally flying out the wall gaps! The kids (now adults) still talk about it to this day!

    What a cool perspective. My aunt and uncle have lived in Hawaii since before I was born, but they were not born there. (i'm old). I am thinking of spending more time there, maybe even settling down there. I'm half Chinese and half white (midwest) and it feels like home to me on the Big Island. I feel local, even though I speak like a mainlander--my looks give me away! Applying for jobs there because it feels like home to a hapa.

  • @Allinmyworld

    I grew up here and the family dynamic is a big one. You aren't just marrying the person you really are marrying into a family. So, with my ex-husband his family lives far away and he didn't get like the holiday dinners and get togethers, or just doing things together and it didn't work out because he didn't get along with my family. My boyfriend now i told him while i don't expect to love my family like i do (they don't have to be best friends) I do expect that we will be doing holidays, get togethers, birthday's and just spending time together in general and that is something he had to get used to. To be with me you have to accept and love my family. It's not like my family is far away. I love wife's sentiment at the end we aren't just mom and dad but also husband and wife. Kids grow up and may move away but your partner u have to keep pouring into that. Great advice 💗

    It’s great that your wife lived in NY and got somewhat westernized. She’s more open minded than most direct to Hawaii Japanese nationals who are typically reserved and carry some prejudice towards Koreans, Chinese and Filipinos. She blends in well in Hawaii too and can automatically be expedited to local status…

  • @EvilTheOne

    - Due in large part to the cost of living here, as opposed to the mainland, many of the people I dated here when I was single, they were still living at home. And therefore, they didn't have the life experience burdens that came with living on one's own self. So not having that common-core-of-experience does affect the ability to relate to one another. As people who moved away from Hawaii and then returned to live, there life may have expanded beyond just living with one's parents.
    - In dating someone from the mainland, there is a distinct possibility that the partner's parents does not live within a 20 minute drive of where you live (to a great degree, it's that way here). So seeing a partner's parents may be few a far between. After all, they may be living in a totally different state, or at least part of the state.

    • @HelloFromHawaii
      @HelloFromHawaii  9 місяців тому

      Good point. Most young adults are still living at home with their parents. Nothing wrong with that, as I did that when I first moved back to Hawaii. But it's tough when they've never had to live on their own. At least the mainland taught me how to take care of myself...mostly 😄

When we finally met, TOTALLY different!!! I could tell she was a mainland born asian and not EVEN CLOSE to having the same things we mentioned to each other.........after that, I made a rule, not to go online to seek a partner, seek love, etc. In my honest opinion, women nowadays, dont care much for their "own". and with that said.......congrats on your both and as for me, I will leave it up to my parents up there...........and the Lord.
