  • I was fortunate to be able to be sent by UA-cam at Google to attend the Grace Hopper Celebration / Conference! Here's a recap and my thoughts, as well as some footage from the event. Not entirely what I expected, and hoping for it becoming better in the future.

    Maybe I'm wrong, but aren't women already given an advantage in hiring over equally qualified men? If that is the case, it seems weird to have a problem with men attending this for the purpose of seeking employment.
    I'm sure there are plenty of issues faced in more specific to women as they are minorities in the field, but men are dealing with a host of issues more unique to them, as well as some of the same problems women deal with even if it isn't obvious to you.
    They're fighting any way they can to get ahead just like you are, and it seems like they deck is stacked further against them

      I don't believe that's true. Most attempts to get more women jobs in tech are about getting them in the pipeline for the interview and lowering sexist barriers to entry -- not lowering the bar. But let's, for the sake of argument, assume you're right that given equally qualified candidates a woman has an advantage.
      Equally qualified by what metric? Considering the bias against women and the difference in cultural expectations which encourage women to act in ways perceived as low-status and less capable, any subjective measurement (i.e. the human element) will artificially deflate women candidate scores. So to to be perceived as "equally" qualified as a man is to actually BE better in the vast majority of cases. Imagine starting at -10 points and a man starts at 0. If at the end of the interview you both have 50 points and are now seen as "equally qualified" but the woman gets the job that would actually be the more qualified candidate getting the position.
      I literally video taped myself answering algorithm questions and had to train myself to stop speaking in a way that felt natural to me because I knew what felt polite and collaborative to me would come across as lacking in confidence and leadership to most men in the short time-frame an interview provided.

      @@morganwildermuth4558 the "bias" you're talking about doesn't exist, if anything, women are more supported to be confident and outgoing than men who are called "toxicly masculine" or whatever that means.

    The whole purpose of this tech conference is not to help & enable women. If women are as strong as they believe they can dominate the industry if they decide to work hard enough for it without taking & devoting resources specifically for themselves. The purpose of this event is to keep an advantage, the movement has long achieved its goal & is only looking to keep that advantage for selfish gain. It's even more disgusting if you take a good look at the people that were there, you aren't taking resources from the mean white men that did this, instead denying a minority access to the same opportunity you have. If that doesn't speak for the broader effect your "movement" is causing, then I don't know what does.

    So an all female tech conference is ok, but an all male tech conference is not ok? It's a male dominated industry, because mostly men created the industry. Sounds like reverse discriminatory expectations. Any field that has less women is likely because less women are interested in the field. Don't assume they are being locked out by white men. The crowd seem largely asian and likely immigrant, should non asians and immigrants complain also about lack of representation too? Whenever I hear someone crying for "allies", it is because they are usually not strong enough to fight their own battles. Be sure to ally with men too. Otherwise, you come across like an entitled hypocrite.

      The thing is, is nobody as far as I know is advocating for perfect 50/50 gender distributions.
      There used to be no women in a lot of sectors, and if all we ever thought was what your are thinking, nothing would have ever changed. Minority groups still need spaces to share experience and navigate things.
      Just because there will never be perfect demographic parity doesn’t mean these people don’t have a right to congregate. And they DIDNT EVEN BAN MEN FROM THE EVENT. They showed good faith this entire time, and obviously these men exploited it. Barging your way in front of women in line? Literally the entire reason for this conference is proven by your attitude and the men who showed up to this event being pieces of shit.

      Please check your facts. Men did not create this industry. Women did. Ada Lovelace was the first computer programmer. This conference was named after Grace Hopper who created the first accessible computer programming language in English. During WW2 women were programmers and mathematicians. I must assume you are a young male. As a female network engineer for over 30 years, I can ASSURE you that things have been challenging for women in their careers. A woman walks into a room and it is assumed she is marketing, sales, or administrative. A woman must work twice as hard to ensure she has more technical credibility than a man. For men, technical credibility is assumed. I am thrilled to see young female engineers busting through that glass ceiling that I have chipped away at for 30+ years. And your comment about STRONG.........female engineers are damn strong! We deal with unconscious bias every day. Until you walk in my shoes or any female engineer's shoes, you won't understand, but please be open-minded and learn rather than bashing!!

    • @geacar1301
      @geacar1301 9 місяців тому +3

      @strongBEAUTIFULacro You should take a look at your bias. What you said sounds grossly sexist. It's ok to be sexist against men and spout victimhood rhetoric? It's ok if there is bias as long as it's in your favor? Typical. That conference was sexist and exclusive. Check YOUR facts! These tech giants were largely started by individual men not coders from 60 years ago. Everybody lays the foundation for somebody else. These women coders had foundations laid by men that created. Saying women are responsible for the hard work of these men that built these tech giants is just sexist and ignorant. I can say men are responsible for most infrastructure in society and the world. That means men gave you the good life you have now and the female coders the lives they had then. Yet, that's sexist. You saying women work "twice as hard" as men is sexist, embarrassing, and ignorant. It's also false and verifiably delusionally not true. What you said comes across as sexist, hypocritical, victimhood, and also ageist. You read like you're ok with that. Then men should be sexist and ok with it too. You are brave enough to mention gender, but you don't mention these men were largely asian and Indian (which would make you also sound racist. You're brave enough to be ignorantly sexist, but not brave enough to sound racist?). This is likely a culture and economic issue vs just a gender issue. There are more culture issues here than gender issues. Many of these men are desperate to hold on to visas. The conference provided a biased opportunity for women that may have economic or visa issues in this downturn economy, but there was no opportunity for these men. Sexism is just as gross in a woman as it is in a man. A sexist woman that wants better treatment is a hypocrite. I don't believe in sexism against women or men. Giving someone a chance because of their gender is just as bad as not giving them a chance, because of their gender. You want male allies? Quit blaming, portraying yourself as a victim of all men, as well as attacking all men for your weaknesses and failures as an individual (or woman). Or for the behavior of a few men (or women). It makes you sound weak. You want industry, then create it. Stop whining like a child about how men don't give you slices of cake that they bake. What you're implying is that you're more qualified every time than men that are hired over you. That's just not true. There are issues with men and issues with women. The problem is men are always hearing they have issues. Women don't hear they have just as many issues as men (if not more). Men get attacked for saying the same sexist stuff you say. It's ok because you're woman? You see less female programmers, because more men were interested in the field for a long time . Now that's changing the last few years. Are you blaming men for the long term lack of interest by women in this industry too? Why are you pandering and begging men for opportunities vs create them yourself? That's power! You communicate blame and weakness. Which makes you powerless.

      Blacks should also have separate restrooms and schools because white people have a history of abusive behavior towards other races. We should also probably split up public transportation for safety as well, such as putting whites at the back and blacks at the front. Splitting up the sports is probably for the best too, since whites seem to insist on singing the national anthem of a country founded on racism. I think if we did all this our society would be more equal and inclusive.
