  • Welcome to my latest adventure in Da Nang, Vietnam! In this video, I'll be taking you on a journey to Marble Mountain, one of the most awe-inspiring natural wonders in the country.
As I arrived at the foot of the mountain, I was immediately struck by its beauty. The towering peaks, lush greenery, and intricate rock formations. But that was just the beginning.
I started by getting a coffee at one of the many shops at the foot of the mountain, many doing their best to lure tourists in. I had a quick coffee and a look around the marble gift shop before i took on the climb of the mountain. The nearby cave is a separate attraction, so i head to the cave next. As I hiked up the mountain, I discovered a world of hidden caves, ancient temples, and breathtaking vistas. The intricate carvings and sculptures of the pagodas and shrines were a testament to the incredible skill and craftsmanship of the Vietnamese people.
But what really blew my mind was the incredible network of tunnels that ran throughout the mountain. These tunnels were used by the Viet Cong during the Vietnam War, and exploring them was an unforgettable experience.
As I emerged from the tunnels, I was greeted by the stunning view of the South China Sea. The panoramic vista stretched out before me, and I felt a sense of awe and wonder at the natural beauty of this incredible country.
Throughout my journey, I was struck by the warmth and hospitality of the Vietnamese people. Their kindness and generosity made my trip to Marble Mountain all the more memorable.
So come with me on this incredible adventure to Marble Mountain in Da Nang, Vietnam. I was shocked how the cost was so little, just $3 or $4 for both attractions. Incredible really!

Very Nice Wayne, I enjoyed that! The lady in the opening was cute and reminded me of my first trip to Vietnam when the U.S. Government prohibited Americans from going to Vietnam, and Vietnam didn't allow foreign tourist to venture out on their own unaccompanied. After the first day of tour group tourist traps in Hanoi a British guy and me said we were sick and ditched the tour group, and ventured out on our own, and everybody was asking us were we were from, and When I would say U.S. people would light up with delight. In a park, a good sized group of people formed around is as they hardly saw a tourist outside of a tour group, and a couple of police officers strolled up and the one who spoke pretty good English asked where we were from and where out tour group was. I Said "America and England! and we left the tour group to meet real people and see the Real Hanoi, You going to arrest us now?!" He smiled and laughed and said: OH NO Americans and English you welcome Vietnam!". Today decades later it's one of my most cherished memories.

We had a vet tour in 2008. Very friendly people. And thriving cities. Don't think we would be so kind after being attacked and bombed.

@@robertburnett6348 Well a lot of people there saw the allied forces in Vietnam as defenders. After a few years of CCP oppression it seemed to me that even many ardent communist supporters in Hanoi were forced to come to grips they were worse off as a colony of China and had a different sense of purpose when it came to America.

Brilliant work Wayne. I loved every minute of this tour. Starting with the lovely jubbly lady, the amazing marble figurines she sold. The caves were sensational and you are right, what an amazing setting for a night club. I was thinking a rock concert actually. The caves looked like something out of Raiders of the Lost Ark and I could picture Harrison Ford doing his thing in there. The marble mountain and surrounds fantastic and what an amazing view of the city.. You have excelled sir. One of the best and so glad you shared it with us. 🤩

Can I add? There was no elevator on our 2008 vet tour. Kind of a difficult climb then. Our regiment was north. I never was sure where I was until our reunions. Anyway, the sorrow of war book is probably out of print. But maybe in some Viet book stores. Bao's last sentence..."Those we're the days when all of us were young, very pure and very sincere." Wayne, it helps that I can relate these stories to you. Not many here interested anymore. To many wars since then., I guess.Thanks.

I was there too, most all of 1968 attached to NSA Security, first at the dump looking up at Crow's Nest and then at the Marble Moutain Transmitter site next to 3rd Amtrac. I walked the dirt road through that village getting to 3rd Amtrac many times....there was nothing around there but shacks. I used to see Crow's Nest Marines working the 106...first the .50 cal tracer round, then the 106 round would follow. ☺

My brother Michael Stuart USMC retired was there. He sometimes talks of a battle that took place on marble Mountain while protecting a gun that was up there. I have pictures of this exact area from about 1969, possibly 1970.

You can organize the rave: Rave in the Cave. You'd better trademark that before someone steals it, 555. Hey, my GF just called and said it is raining there in CM and is set to rain all night. So there is clean air on the way I think. Songkran came through again.

Wayne...I found that war book written by a surviving N. Viet soldier. "The sorrow of war". By Bao Ninh.1969. English version by Frank Palmos. Vintage, 1998. Bao was born in 1952. So maybe still alive. He was one of ten soldiers out of a brigade of 500 that survived.

When I researched my Da Nang stay, this was not included in any of the articles I read, I wonder why not? I wanted to go to The Golden Bridge (the big hands), but none of the tours were running yet (Vietnam reopened a week before I arrived). I would have enjoyed the calmness of this.

Some nasty crap went on there during the war. The Marines had a big air base there on the beach called Marble Mountain air base. The marble sellers are merciless, and you will always get ripped off. I found the sellers further in sell the actual handmade marble crafts. It was well worth going up the mountain.

    • @WalkAboutWayne
      @WalkAboutWayne  Рік тому +2

Yep, still tunnels in the mountain that they used for the war. I went down them. They clever sellers, they know all the lingo from any country. They was all nice though, nothing to major. Amazing mountain for $2. Loved it.

Could easily lose your marbles in there, Wayne. Sometimes, I wish people would leave all the religious paraphernalia outside these attractions, natural caves are good enough. Got used to it in Thailand, seeing mystical Buddha's mixed up with spider man figurines and a fighting cock for good measure. Assuming it was a lot cooler inside the cave mate.
