I remember enjoying this a lot - mostly for the weirdness and creepyness. And the "twist" ending wasn't bad in my opinion. In a b movie kind of way of course.
I think the problem with the twist ending is that it doesn't particularly signal toward it in a meaningful way throughout, it attempts to be a "aha! The pieces finally fall into place!" moment but it's not impactful enough to do that (at least for me) and has that classic '90s B-Movie cheese to go with it (as you say). I'm a huge fan of B-movie stuff so, personally, I was satisfied with it. I found it hilarious.
What I disliked the most about this game.... At one stage in the game's life it was pixel art, REALLY good, well made pixel art too. For some reason when using real people for sprites became a thing, they threw out ALL that gorgous artwork and replaced it with this crap, sometimes you can even see the original art sprites beneath the new one, they were very lazy with it. In doing this, it made the game look incredibly low budget and BAD, along with a change in the text box and font too... everything just looks like a cheap windows 95 game after that. They shouldn't have done it but people think jut because something is new "its better". They even had hand-drawn backgrounds but they too were thrown out for the horrible, quickly made pre-rendered stuff you see, AND ALL RUSHED AT THE LAST MINUTE!
The Stephanie death scene is rubbish. She goes from wearing tan coloured lace top stockings to none to plain black ones. Where's theh hosiery continuity?
i always saw Harvester's story as kind of an ironic dismissal of the moral outrage around video games at the time. They are making fun of the censorship crowd with a sort of pseudo-mature edginess, simultaneously getting the attention of the censoring outlets while being able to point at the ending and say, "see? we're making the same points as you, so if you hate our game, you're a hypocrite." This hypocrisy points out the REAL hypocrisy of politicians being against violent video games but rabidly pro violent interventions in sovereign disputes in real life during this time. You don't get to be anti-violence but then pro-war. Dropping actual bombs during the day while grandstanding against violence video games because the misconception that all games are for children hadn't been overcome yet. It's a highly time-capsulized snub to the sociopolitical zeitgeist of 30 years ago. Adding to the "not aging well" list is the fact that the guy who played the player character is a fucking sex offender.
So weird a early version of that Natural Causes Scene when the game was all Pixel art was Shown on the Games Master Gore Special and right after it some cut scenes from I Have No Mouth And I Must Scream weird.
I do have this somewhere after picking it up in a bargain bin for a quid many, many years ago. Seem to recall that I played it for about 10 mins, thought it was crap and never played it again. But at least now I can say I have been to a Harvester before.
The spinal cord thing is brilliant 😂 i think the humour is probably hilarious all round if people still had a sense of humour. Im tempted to watch a long play but its a point and click so 🤔🧐
Heh the Wasp woman that was left into the game for no clear reason. I don't know if the original vision of Gilbert Austin would have made more sense if the devs had not taken two years to finish the game - probably not - but still this trainwreck is one of my favourite trainwrecks ever.
I played through the game twice, and realised at the end of my first playthrough that I'd never even found the Wasp Woman everyone kept talking about! Haha. She's just sort of... There.
Game is essentially parody of the era’s violence in media creates more violence. Interestingly there are some puzzles that can be completed various ways. I had to resort to walkthrough and reading it I realized I had done few things differently. Imo it’s quite ok title. But the combat is absolutely broken and lodge part is essentially fully…shit.
At a time when developers didn't know what to do with all that extra storage for CDROM games, I thought they all looked like this and steered clear of all of them. Well, I played Myst and hated every second of it. But overlaying the shitness of a B-Movie on it kinda hides all that. The sort of plot you'd come up with if there was nothing between the thought happening and it being in the game.
Fun Fact! Harvest is the home town of Nam Rood! Also having Kurt Kistler get instantly arrested the second he says "hello" to a child is brilliant, great job.
ignore my other comment lol! YOU ONLY WENT AND DID IT ALREADY! THIS is one of my fav games ever. i did a thesis on it at uni XD i love this game so much for basically saying "game make you kill people" then gets gradually weirder to the point your sat there going "na, this is nonsense" because even the very end, bad ending, you stand up and mum walks in, "games make you violent" and the kid goes and kills people. and your sat there thinking....this wouldnt make you do that. im gonna go to bed and back to my life. Its a very cool statment on how games cant make someone violent. beacuse you the player, didnt do the thing the game told you to at the end. your not a serial killer in real life, so the game lost. i think its damn clever and a real f you to the media the time who were saying all games made people violent. shamshing a barbers pole ro keysing a car didnt make you do it in real life, by the end it says no, youd never kill somone from being told to in a game. you the player, are proof.
Here in the Lodge we think Harvester is the best game ever created.
I know, I watched a LOT of your videos for research and to get a feel for the fan community, haha

Why is Steve's actor wearing Steve's costume for his real life mugshot?
The bit where the guy with no legs shots you in the face is the exact point I noped out of this game

I was almost expexting road runner to be at the end of his gullet before cutting to black and hearing a quiet meep meep before the credits rolled 😅
Thank you for playing that so I will never have to. Important work.
Any time!
Looked like fun, thanks for playing!
Are those _real_ scars on the Lodge monk? 15:44
Did someone light the 'actor' up with a fkn medieval pitchfork?? !😳!
I'm glad I never ended up buying this and went for "I Have No Mouth And I Must Scream" instead 😑
Still not played that! I need to get round to it.
Crikey...Thank you for sacrificing your time for this one, I have no words!!!
Best/worst thing is, I had to play through the bloody thing twice to capture more footage.
@@RoseTintedSpectrum You deserve a bloody medal for that.
Lol
(Steve to the Monk) _"I'd rather DIE than end up twisted like YOU!!"_ ☝😤
30 seconds later... 16:08 🤣 🤣

Barely 3 minutes in and I have laughed out loud twice. Subscribed!
That music section and ending had me dead 🤣💀
Holy moly that was bananas!
A weird, misshapen, mouldy banana.
With sick on it.
"It was an experience", just slap that on the box

Humour is very subjective. Your comment illustrates that point quite exquisitely.

Yep, I was never a big fan of FMV games for the gameplay - but man oh man, they can produce some of the cheesiest / best sequences.
Was that "ding" a Knightmare reference, with the skull/spine scene?
I didn't put it in there, so I very much doubt it, hahaha.
@@RoseTintedSpectrum ah lol .. it certainly evoked the memory of it
I still love this messed up game, despite of Kurt Kistler being POS in real life!

I suppose it's a failed attempt to sarcastically comment the suppose consequences of violent games starred by a pedophile.
Yeah, it's definitely trying for that... Not successfully, but it's trying.
What a mad mess of a game. Thanks for the video
It's truly a thing that exists.
I should alwats take some class A before watching your videos recently, and fuck up my head

By Grabthar's Hammer, what a shite game.
DON'T FORGET THE ZIP CODE!
I bet you play it again.
Now play the sequel !
