Makes the process all sound pretty easy, especially since I've already found many patriot ancestors. All that is needed now is for me to get the applications ad pull the documents. Also, this is the first time I've seen how the filters work in FTM...Great advice that will definitely help me sort out all the individuals who will get me back up the lines. Thanks!

My 4th great grandfather fought in the revolutionary war. Unfortunately my father's mother and my mother gave false names for our fathers on our birth certificates. Through Ancestry DNA I found our true bloodline, but I was told by someone with SAR that our falsified birth certificates would make it impossible for me to obtain membership. I have a close DNA match to one of my father's half brothers and I match some cousins through the men who would have been my father's uncles. I was told this is not enough to satisfy SAR.

Supra why do we as a nation have veterans day? To honor those who sacrificed for all of us. Is that posterity? Honoring ones heritage and the sacrifice made is why there is a sar. Educating people like yourself is another

I, actually, just submitted the initial application for DAR.
My verifiable lineage includes the following names:
    PARKER
    LONGLEY
    PRESCOTT
Thank you for explaining the genealogical process.

Is it ok to screen shot the SAR pages & add them to the Ancestry tree for my ancestor ?

Thanks so much for the tips on using FTM to generate a list of possible patriot ancestors. I was able to add a couple of additional patriots to my research. Now to prove their connection to me, lol. .

Contact a DAR Chapter near you and if this is your first application, there will be someone to help you fill it in.They can suggest where you might find the documents that you need.

I do know my ancestry because of my sister's diligence that my seventh grandfather was Patrick Henry. She's a member of the DAR but to become an SAR member seems difficult. How might I go about this? Might I simply submit her information since she's my sister for entrance?

Why are you interested becoming a SAR? Are you special because you might be able to prove your ancestry to someone else who may have contributed to another's liberty? Does it mean that your "bloodline" is somehow unique? Or, does it mean that the posterity is left to you at the exclusion of all other non SAR citizens? Are all men created equal? Just curious.

If DAR or SAR were really about exclusion, why are their libraries and records open to the public? You don't have to be a member to take advantage of their genealogical collections both online and on site. Both of these organizations are basically service organizations that are centered around patriotism and historic preservation. The "bloodline" connection is what unifies the membership, but otherwise its not that different from any other service organizations.

Supra Sovereign...that's a fair question (& one I am pondering before applying). It is important to me that I not try to take credit for something my ancestor did. But I feel like joining the DAR is also about HONORING them (imagine your descendants being proud to stand and be recognized as being related to you). Just a thought.

It is about honoring your ancestor and taking pride in your heritage. Are they more special? No.
