- Taekwondo is a popular martial arts style that has found its way into fighting games. Many characters love the kick-centric attacks and base their moveset on taekwondo. The accuracy of it to the real-life style can vary, but all these characters practice Taekwondo in one form or another. I’ll be looking at their moveset, backstory, and a few other odds and ends when ranking these fighting game Taekwondo practitioners.

As someone who has been practicing Taekwondo for 22 years now I am happy to see this video. Yes some characters take the kicking idea way to far, these are video game characters haha. This brought a big smile to my face. Thank you MrTopTenList
Hwoarang has been my favorite ever since Tekken 3. Didn't know his fighting style back then, but his number of stances and flashy attitude just felt so awesome.
I initially thought Juri was scary, but then someone thought Juri would be my favorite character, so I looked into her. Now she's one of my favorites (no one can topple our queen, Poison, on my list though). Juri just needs some friends to hang out with to do things that don't involve fighting and I'm sure she'd become an upstanding citizen.

Kim should have been number one just for being the very first take Kwon do character in a fighting game. He is the father of that style in games. Overall good list though
Its the same thing with Eddie. He wasn't the first but clearly...CLEARLY he's THE capo guy everyone thinks of. Same for Hwo. Their movesets are nearly a full encyclopedia of the martial art.
Kim is also the most iconic of these. I guarantee that people will remember Kim over the others after playing each of the games once.

@@dickthebirthdayboy2132There isn't a Tekken game that I don't own, and I couldn't pick Hwoarang out in a line-up. Martial Law, Nina Williams, Heihachi, & King are more recognizable characters. But I also main Julia Cheng, so I could recognize her too.

Jin Kazama Quan fighters are my favoriteeee- Xiaoyu, Helena, etc. So fluid and always amazing to learn technique characters like this!!

Tang soo do was actually the og taekwondo. Tang soo do is the ancestor of subak, taekkyeon and shotokan karate. Then in the 1950s. During after the korean war. Tang soo do decides to split into different styles. Tang soo do reform to mu doo kwon/soo bahk do. It is focus on the karate and taekkyeon roots. Taekwondo is now been introduced during the after the korean war. But then taekwondo have split into different federations. Itf(international taekwondo style) focus on power, strength and hardcore training. Itf is focus on its subak roots and it is focus on heavy kicks, punches and knees but they don't wear body protection. Just headgear, footwear and boxing gloves. Wtf(world taekwondo/olympic style) focus on speed, fast kicks, flexibility and combative sports. It is focus on the taekkyeon and shotokan roots but they occasionally punch a little bit. They also wearing chest body protection, padded gloves, footwear and headgear. The reason why they occasionally punch a little bit is because most Olympic taekwondo practitioners don't punch. They can punch only in the torso area but not in the head or face. In itf they can punch just like shotokan karate points. Its difficult to understand but you have to search the history on taekwondo why it was split into different styles and influences.
I trained taekwondo(wtf/Olympic sport style). But i know some few histories about its origin but it's very difficult to understand.

Some of the craziest taekwondo moves I’ve seen in a video game was in Urban Reign, there is this character names Dae Suk Park. He would have easily cracked the top 3 of this list.
- I was expecting Kim Kaphwan to be top 1 since he is the first person who introduces Korea and taekwondo to the world of fighting game; but oh well Hwoarang isn't so bad to be put at top 1.
- and Speaking of Hwoarang, you said his name right don't worry.
- Since Yunseong's kicking style predates the origins of taekwondo, his fighting style was probably called Taekyon an another kick-oriented korean martial art that taekwondo was based on.

I have to say I really appreciate this video I also studied taekwondo as a kid for about 2 1/2 years or so until I was forced to quit because my instructor moved to a different state and took his business with him After he moved away I tried out a few other places but it didn’t feel the same then I was offered a chance to train with Jason David Frank a.k.a. the green and white power ranger from the original series because he had opened a studio in the town I happens to be living in but for whatever reason I turned it down to think I could’ve become a Power Ranger and I threw it all away
You forgot to mention that Hwoarang is based in the movements of ITF Taekwon-Do master Hwang Su Il

Personally it's all because Tekken is more popular/well known in the west compared to SNK I think. Also think Kim should have been number 1.

I like how Baek's costume mixes the ITF and WTF dobok styles, although since he uses his hands more, I tend to see him as mostly an ITF man.
I've always much preferred Baek and his discipline over Hwarang and his variety. While I do really like Kim, (he is my number 2) Baek is still my number 1 favorite Taekwondo-styled fighter. It's precisely because of his disciplined and measured approach as well as his overall demeanor that makes me like him so much.
You can tell that he takes his martial art seriously and that he is equally earnest in all things. Some might find him too stoic and dour, but I like to think it adds to his charm lol

Technically Rig is more neutral-good as it was revealed he was Donavan's kid and helped his villainous father at the start of the final-half of DOA5's main-plot until Kasumi helped him go back to the side of good.

Here's an idea do top 10 duo characters in fighting games like for example the ice climbers, rosalina and luma, noob and smoke.
for yunseng. There was a fighting style called soo bak. that was practiced in the silla court by the hwa rang, who were kind of korean Buddhist knights, and the origin of that tekken fighter's name. while in reality its likely that japans occupation of Korea likely influenced Korean martial arts, as shotokan forms look VERY similar to tang soo do forms(tsd is basically tkd with some political infighting) a lot of Korean masters tend to point to soo bak as the progenitor of tae kwon. (and yes, i am a cho-dan in tsd, so its a topic im big on researching)

Was hoping May Lee was here, so I'm happy :D _But_ I'm also a little bummed Chae Lim from KOF 2006/Max Impact 2 didn't get her due - I feel like I'm the only one who remembers her. I *guess* I get it since SNK sort of saturated the taekwondo characters, but she's just one of my favorite character designs in KOF. Don't know how she looks in Max Impact 1, but 2006's alt outfit and palette swap options have some excellent designs that make her look super badass. I admit though, it isn't as good as the evil Gulla Gulla Frog from May Lee's shirt though, lol. This was a real funny video, btw! Nice cameo by the Justice Fruit Pies at 1:37, and the "Did you know that all teachers in the DOA universe are named _school?"_ line was hilarious. This was a great one!
Y'know, since you're such a Fighting Game Fan, have you ever done a Top Ten Cancelled (but promising) Fighting Games list? That could be neat - there's so many! Location tested-but-never-released arcade titles like Atari-Midway's Tenth Degree, Dimps' Atomiswave Kenju, Sammy's Atomiswave Force Five... unreleased console titles like Burning Fist Force Striker and Thrill Kill.... failed Kickstarter titles like Beast's Fury and Super Combat Fighter... unfinished mysteries like Dragon Heaven, Killing Bites and Capcom Fighting All-Stars... random titles like Double Helix's Justice League, WWE Brawl or EA Chicago's MARVEL... and of course, well-known stuff like Primal Rage 2 and Thrill Kill. Seriously, there's A LOT to look at, with a lot of interesting stories behind 'em too.
It would require some extra research maybe (unless you're weird like me and eat up this info thanks to places like unseen64 and various UA-cam channels dedicated to cancelled games), and it would absolutely be *super* subjective, but a lot of these games do have a ton of media and footage floating around out there, if not dumped ROMs, and it could definitely be an interesting & fun list to put together sometime :)
Honestly, I can be fine with Juri taking the bronze, she'll always be golden in my heart. Also! She's Korean which is another layer to her mirroring Chun-Li!

Kim is the first tk character in fighting games. All other tk characters are based on kim. He is also the most fleshed out character on this list. I think he deserves to be #1. I would have def put hworang 2nd though, he is pretty cool

I think Baek was blackmailed into destroying Law's Dojo rather than defeating Law, because Law's reason for joining Tekken 2 is to avenge his dojo and students from this assailant (Baek) and he did successfully avenged them according to the canon story of tekken 2.

Juri is my main! (Recently Chun li is tied because I finally got her moveset to work), but I recognized that Kim is better because he us an actual master and has taught others. So when he wasn't number 1, I was about to rage, until you made sense and I respect the list.

Yun Seong would actually fight Tae-Kyon, which originated Taekwondo and was practiced since before 50 B.C.

I only ever played so much of the KoF series, but it never occurred to me just how far reaching of an influence Good Guy Kim has on the series. Go figure, pretty much every Tae Kwon Do fighter in that series exists because at some point they were trained by Kim. =p

Tekken characters always getting number one spot, that's how good the characters are, they're unique, and always well detailed, and their stories are actually good, compared to other characters from other games.
Kim deserves to be #1 he's the craziest Taekwondo user since 1992
Juri has some outstanding qualities to her character, but as probably most would know, she's just .. well.. in D&D levels, more like neutral evil. She's not bad bad bad, she has her strong points and good reasons, but.. can't let those out else it'll spell trouble. The one thing that I would like to point out about her is that she's pretty much resonate with a lot of people, she's taking on a much bigger picture on her own and do it that way instead of involving others, because "too many cooks spoil the broth". How many people can really relate to this, even on a smaller scale?
Kim's twin sons however.. I will give more credential points to Jae since he really took his father's teachings very seriously.

Her gameplay in Maximum Impact 2 is awesome.
Her Flamingo stance has a lot of options, good high/low and overhead mixups.

To actually think you left out Chae Li from the Kof Maxium Impact games. Though honestly the most obscured members of Kim's team are his various strikers who only made like one appearance each.
An honorable you could have included (perhaps loosely) is Jenny from Bloody Roar 2. And since you used Yunsung from Soul Calibur, I'm surprised that you didn't mention Hwang Sung Kyung from SoulEdge (SoulBlade for PlayStation).

When i started practicing taekwondo, i was a bit disappointed when i found out that thunder cross split attack is not real.

And you did pronounce Hwoarang well, but TaeKwonDo is pronounced "teH" not "thai". I think it's a common thing, but just think of how Baek is pronounced, same vowel pattern. Taekwondo & boxing would be an interesting combo! A pure feet fighting style and a pure punching style together!
Doesn't work. The way boxing works requires you to be grounded, feet planted every time you throw a punch while utilizing upper body movement. TKD is opposite to boxing, true to form. Lot's of aerials and feet often off the floor, using a lot of lower body movement. The only real synergy is that both styles are light on their feet, assuming you use out-boxing rather than slugger or swarmer.
Lone Wander interesting, but theoretically a true master could switch from one to the other rather quickly
