I played flute for 6 years but was never properly shown how to do vibrato, they just expected me to figure it out. Now here I am, 28 years old and picking up the flute again. This has been the best instructional video I've ever had, thank you so much.
I NEEDED THIS! I naturally have always done a vibrato with my throat and I KNEW it was wrong! I have been searching for validation! Now, I have to break this habit after YEARS and learn the Diaphragm vibrato..... Thank you!
Damn I didn't know vibrato on flute was 10 times harder than on a string instrument😮 In case of guitar, it's just WIGGLE, WIGGLE WIGGLE😂 Great video as always Toni Sensei❤
As we’ve seen not only from Flute teachers but vocal instructors also, there’s a lot of misconception concerning vibrato. No, it doesn’t come from the diaphragm and as Galway says, it’s produced in the throat. As noted flute educator Gary Sigurdson taught, simply practice the hissing exercise to gain control over the gentle air pulsations your throat will produce. Even in this wonderful lady’s example, her slow demonstration exhibits fluctuation of pitch, but her actual vibrato example shows only pulsations of airstream.
In band I am supposed to learn vibrato at home for a long term goal so this is really helping. I am playing flute for my second year ._. Yes I know I am a beginner and she said beginners shouldn't be learning this just yet but my band teacher says I should be ready to learn how I guess-
thank you this really really helped! i felt i was the only one who couldn’t do in my section, so thank you!!! (i can only do it slow for now but i’m working on it :))
I can vibrate. But i don't why i can and how to do it -_- I've just suddenly done it. Also, Do you know how to press a note? It likes you blow a lot of air in one note to make it sound louder :3. It's a technique in eastern flute
If you don't know why it happens, it might be a random fluctuation in your mouth or throat. You might want to practice using your diaphragm like Toni is recommending and see if you can get more control over it.
I already learned how to do vibrato but I find it very hard. I think with your steps it's easier to achieve a good vibrato than how my teacher showed me so thank you, I'll try to do them in my next practice session
Could you please do a cover of ‘ Yes Ok’ , from youth with you season 2 I would also highly recommend watching the survival show if you haven’t already, it recently ended. The group shall be debut soon, their name is The9, it consist of nine members. Here are their rankings: 1. Liu Yuxin 2. Esther Yu 3. Kiki Xu 4. Yu Yan 5. Shaking 6. Baby Monster An 7. Xiao Zhaotang 8. Snow Kong 9. K Lu (These are their stage names)
Yeah! I there are also so many other songs from youth with you 2 that I think would sound great on the flute :) although I don’t think they’re that popular, but maybe Sun, Miss You 3000, Kissing the Future of Love, Flammable & Explosive are good for a more melodic approach. But Lover and It’s Ok seem to be more popular and could be great flute covers too. (lol this comment can just be ignored, I just really liked this show)
Mystery as to why so many great flutists and even singers with beautiful vibratos get so sidetracked trying to explain and teach it? Vibrato on flute is clearly not produced by the diaphragm (or abdominal muscles). That's where the air-support comes from but instead it is indeed the throat pulsing gently that produces the slight variation in air-speed necessary for vibrato. Watch any flutist closely and notice their throat pulsating, not the front of their clothes!
The diaphragm pulls air down into the lungs. When exhaling, it is at rest… your intercostal muscles around the lungs push air out to deflate your lungs. It’s these muscles that are used in pulsating vibrato.
Might be a super noob question, but can you practice just the vibrato technique by just whistling? It'd be a BIG "hack", because I could practice anywhere, even driving!
No one seriously produces flute-vibrato using "jaw/lips." No one produces vibrato using "diaphragm" (abdominal) muscles either. As Galway has said, "no one can train their diaphragm to do that." EVERYONE (including the lovely Toni) actually produces vibrato using slight subtle throat pulsations. The super-slow vibrato demonstrated here is possible without throat-control, but when it reaches real vibrato-speed that's a different story.

You just need to practice 40 hours a day in order to get a good vibrato.

this gave me a decent vibrato in 5 minutes and after practice for a while it sounds amazing thanks

I had the same. It's actually pretty good, but you should also learn to be able to control your vibrato, so learn it from scratch :)
If you don't know why it happens, it might be a random fluctuation in your mouth or throat. You might want to practice using your diaphragm like Toni is recommending and see if you can get more control over it.

I can only do vibrato unintentionally when running out of breath on long notes. 😆

Question (not sure if I missed this in the video, though. I was rushing)
When I try this, should your note go sharper when your diaphragm out or in?
Sister I liked all of your video I leant flute full thanks sister🤗🙂
Thank you!!! I loved this video!!!
Nice video! Was that vibrato a pitch or volume or both? How do you do one or the other?
thank you so much, you're amazing!!! 💖💖
Hi,Is it normal for your tummy muscles to hurt whiles learning vibrato?
thank you for sharing, I started learning the flute.
How long does it take to get a good vibrato?
*I’m 1st to comment*
Also, it’s always good to use a metronome
Thanks! Amazing!🤩

Yea, right. James Galway has a very bad sound with his throat vibrato.
