Vaisakhi: Thousands fill Surrey streets for annual Sikh celebration

- One of the world’s largest Vaisakhi celebrations in the world was underway in Surrey, B.C. on Saturday, with hundreds of thousands flooding the streets for the popular annual event.
Organizers had expected more than 700,000 people to attend the event, a record number for the celebration.
Vasakhi dates back to 1699 and celebrates the revelation of the Khalsa, which refers to a community that considers Sikhism its faith. It has become a holy day to mark the birth of the Khalsa fraternity.

I spent some time homeless on the streets of both Vancouver and Toronto and consistently the Sikh people would set up tents and give out free food. I know many homeless people who would have gone hungry if not for the Sikh people.

When will we Sikhs become brave enough to declare the truth that our Gurughar or home is not Indian Punjab, because we belong to Lahore in Pakistan the kingdom of Maharaja Ranjit Singh who was our forefather the lion of Punjab. Nankana is the birthplace of Guru Nanak. That is why we wanted Kartarpur Corridor to reach our home in Lahore. To seek a separate state in Indian Punjab is to look for fish in urine. We use India for cheap education & farmland money for us to move abroad. But how long will our homeland keep calling us...come on brave brothers let us move back home to Lahore, Pakistan. One thing I notice is that there are no non-Indian people at this event year after year. If you see other large gatherings in this province there are diverse crowds. Maybe the Punjabi community should work on trying to be more inclusive towards other groups?
Sikhs are inclusive... anyone can come and have a meal. Universal brotherhood.
I don't remember a single Sikh at my neighbourhood's cenotaph on Remembrance day last year. Plenty of East asians, not a single Sikh. Probably because it was not very inclusive, no Punjabi food distributed and no music except the Last post.

Our religious locations welcome all. If you see the Nishan Sahib which is that tall orange flag, it means all are welcome and can come and eat and get a place of shelter.
Darbar Sahib which is known as the Golden Temple has 4 doors... to symbolize all faiths and people are welcome here.
Hence, please read more about us, don't confuse us for anyone else. Our mindset is One Universal brotherhood.
