This is why I bought a knife of yours because of your hard work and dedication and superior eye in perfection and details plus the team you have is strong In there workmanship. Cheers and happy belated Father’s Day John
Wow, I’m impressed with the silvent air guns! Not only did you not trash them, you showed us how cool a company they are. I had no idea air guns like that existed! Sweet.
The alarm on the barfeeder was the machine trying to do more parts when there was no sufficient bar left. Reduce your rechuck distance or increase the part length on the feeder to make it change the bar one part earlier so it wont try to run a part with not enough bar.
couple things on the bar feed alarm (I have 7 swiss ) -burr on bar, sometimes from gripper -main collet getting stuck(plastics are messy) -insuficient dwell between barfeed feed on and rechuck -insuficient push pressure -oh and plastic makes a mess
The build on that air gun suffered as a result of focusing on the air tip. Aluminum to plastic is a temporary attachment point. Solid brass chrome plated with Teflon tape is the best way to go for a shop tool. Can you remove the the tube and nozzle and thread it into brass handle?
Hi John...I'm John as well. I'm a RS Tool and Die Maker and RS Machinist. Used to own my own CNC shop until 2011. A comfortable shop is a productive shop. If you ever want to get into cnc die sinking edm let me know. Cheers
How many spare tool pockets do you have on the Mori? Make a carbide tool with a hemisphere hole the size of your ball in the end. Superglue a ball in the hemisphere and load in the machine. Call the tool and push the ball in while spinning. Lights out for the number of tools you make. The Kern has plenty of room (for now).
The real meat of the air nozzle getting extra air boost is a result of fluid entrainment, which is the actual action of the fast moving air creating a low pressure state that pulls extra air in through the surrounding holes along for the ride. A laminar flow venturi is what creates that primary blast, entrainment is the action of surrounding air amplifying the volume of air being moved. Same concept as the bladeless fans and so-on. Unless I'm totally way off in this case, aerofluids guys please add more info!
one other comment why not open that nice big bay door. I worked in an older shop with no air back in the day we would open the front door and the back delivery doors. you would be amazed how much airflow that gives you.
Started thinking this ball pick and place. Maybe there could be a few tool spots on the kern dedicated for some kind of tools which could somehow hold one ball each. The ball would release after the tool has pushed the ball in thr hole. I guess a magnet wont work here because of the ceramic balls, would have ro be some kind of a spring loaded thingy :p
You should consider solar on your flat roof to power AC. At house in Southern California in December 2016 we installed a ground-base solar PV system producing over 27 mWhr of electricity each year. The PV panels were made in Canada. We have 3 AC units for a 5000+ SF house. The AC is producing over 12 tons of cooling.and sometime we run all three AC 24x7. Our electric bill is zero and we even send power back to the grid. The system will pay for itself in four years. One of our best investments ever. You should consider solar. By the way our white plaster pool was at 78 degrees F today and by late August it will sun heat to 85 degrees, so you know it is hot where we live.
It's so funny that you went with hss, I was sat there channeling my inner Saunders saying, "no John, just get the tool out the Mori and set Angelo off making a replacement for the Mori tomorrow" 😂 so funny what you said about rabbit holes, you are a genius and that is what makes your products amazing, but end of June is days away and you ain't got time for the time drains. Keep pushing dude, 1st July is going to feel sooooo sweet
I run a machine shop in Sweden and had never heard of Silvent. I just called them up and said "Hey, send us the air guns Grimsmo has, they look sweet and we need to try them" haha.
So does the detent ball not bottom out in the bottom of it's hole? Is there any concern of it working its way in and changing the detent feel over time? Obviously if it works, it works. But if it were me, I would precisely cut the bottom of the hole to be the stop, and use some kind of a spring loaded punch in the machine to press it.
you might want to make it a standard practice to valve off at end of shift your air guns or even when you are walking away to another work cell. one it puts less stress on the system two if that happened overnight you would have been running your compressor hard all night.
Hey John we appreciate you working your ass off to produce knives for revenue and to keep all of us happy... But make sure you balance work and family :).
If you want to run Lights-Out and hold 0.0002", climate control is a must. We use Heat Pumps that can reverse cycle for A/C. That way, warm or cold out the inside can stay the same temp. One other thing- oversize your system. The cooling load you have now will change as you add machines to your business.
I've never seen a PCD tool look like that, and I've never heard any company recommend their PCD tools for cutting carbide.... my mind is blown... or they are selling CBN coated tools and something got lost in their sales translation. If this is truly PCD, then they have done something that no other company in the world seems to have done. If so, I'm totally getting some!
Dear Gregory, take a look on our UA-cam channel and instagram. Find out what is possible with our PCD tools. Tungsten carbide can be machined very well!
150 bucks for an air gun failing like that? Bring in popcorn! I would not trust plastic for certain applications (like pressure related) - same for pneumatic connectors *rolleyes*
@@COdrummaCO yes it is And if you do research a lot of people are saying that the knife performs better which I highly doubt nothing worse than a thief
I think the word you were looking for when describing the effect of the air nozzle is "venturi effect". edit: I guess I should have waited a few seconds. You figured it out.
Nothing is good anymore. Make your own air gun, or buy an antiquated one and fix it. Seriously, buying again and again, doesn't just not fix the problem, it only deepens it. Kinda get annoyed when people just buy them thinking that there's no consequence other than money being spent. /rant
Air conditioning will help your tolerances too I'm sure.
If the runout is bad just mount the end mill in the vise and the part to be machined in the spindle.
Makeshift lathe

You dont use flood coolant for hardmilling or turning because of thermalshock.

maybe you can put the carbide on spindle and fix the 6C on stationary vise and do your work ?
Only way the Rask will get done by your deadline! 4am nights. Gotta love those nights.

I'll bet you 5 schrute bucks the shop got too hot and loosened an adhesive or gasket and cause failure on your air gun.
Mini-split (ductless) air conditioners (or heat pumps if you want to heat in the winter). They're so awesome.
@johnGrimsmo you should make a tool to place the ball on the parts so you can eliminate the manual load cycle in that system
Air Conditioning will cost serious money, but you will be happier and more productive. You all will be.

Finally, 27 minutes in, you realized you're down the rabbit hole. Get things moving THEN perfect them. Bank that lesson

Literally burst out in full laughter with the "itll take me 5 munutes"... cut to 34 minutes and still not including all the time. Story of my life.

Total silly rabbit hole. kinda hurt to watch.
At least he changed to the easier solution. (only after he ran into too much runout)
These videos get better and better! Really enjoy the way the video was edited! Keep up the good work!
Big fan of AC. Wouldn’t it beneficial to remove the chiller heat with ducting and fans on the roof ??
You did not mention it but did you try , do you tap your tooling in to reduce run-out? Brass punch and brass hammer to manipulate.
I run a machine shop in Sweden and had never heard of Silvent. I just called them up and said "Hey, send us the air guns Grimsmo has, they look sweet and we need to try them" haha.
Fried at 4:20 sounds about right.
Nice
🤣🤣🤣 i work in a factory with literally hundreds of air lines. We get to "shit" our pants like you did every couple of days lol.

The random stuff that happens in a shop amuses me sometimes 😆.
I nearly got shot by an end plug blowing off an air fitting once. It was a big metal one so would have made a nice bruise!
Always my forst videos to watch when they show up. I learn stuff every time. Awesome!!

Take a look at OpenPNP, you can likely use it for placing balls into the knives, ready to be pressed by the machine
John’s facial expression was priceless when it was well past 4am and he goes “We have a Rask handle...” 😂😂😂
You machine shop looks fancier than some of the multi billion dollar semiconductor fab tool rooms I've worked at.
Hey John we appreciate you working your ass off to produce knives for revenue and to keep all of us happy... But make sure you balance work and family :).
Usually drill shank less Hardness than the flutes to help more gripping, isn't it
Thank you airgun, that face was priceless 😆 14:58
What psi are you running for the main shop lines?

You should CNC another copy of you to work the Nightshift.
haha I been getting up at 430am..manufacturing is 64% problem solving 20% making stuff 16% figuring things out (problem solving) lol spot on! 🤣🤣🤣
Have you looked into autodesk partmaker in order to program the swiss?
How do you manage to load the ceramic ball detent on the handle with the pallet system ?
No coolant while milling carbide because of thermal shock I believe
Not everyone like a blade that falls shut. Your knives are pretty dialed. ;)
The coolant will shock/crack PCD/ceramic tooling.
Guy I work with lost an eye to an airline fitting coming out and the horse whipping him in the eye
14:58 Well that got your Amygdala firing 🤣
Get AC bud! I'm never going back.
Dang these Vlogs make my morning...I hope Jon has enough fun making them that they compensate the effort. ^_^
4am! Dude. You're not the only one. Gotta tell ya, It's not a good idea in the long run. Look after yourself mate.

Don’t mind me working in a 45’c greenhouse and high humidity have to keep the machine’s running
So how many of those bearings would I have to assemble for you to work off the cost of a pen?
Could you please tell me the name of the air gun again? Thank you for all that you share.

Coanda effect air nozzle.
4am nights. Yup....a business owner does what an business owner has to do.
I see how it is.. I'm doing the best I can working full time:P
I don’t really understand how work the mechanism of the knife, is there any video ?
Ten years of videos in his history
What is hot in Canada? It is 110°F/43°C in Arizona...anything over 105°F is what I'd consider hot
oops, forgot he had no AC in that part of the building
Hot happens WAY before 105°F. Way before. 80° in Florida feels hotter than 95° in the desert.
Swede here, it's currently 26C/79F in my bedroom and I'm suffering.
I do that every night. It's only 0217 right now.

Was just gong to say why not just machine a HSS shank instead and then you did so good. 👍
Is he highering? He seems like An amazing boss

can always use the climate control excuse for machining precision parts.!
