I love this version of Freeman. The reason he doesn't talk is because he's been so thoroughly traumatized, and has been running for his life since the incident, that the only reason he hasn't completely broken down is because he hasn't had the time to.

You can't say that's not the reason since it's not explained, biggest reason is because they didn't want the player to become Gordon Freeman, they wanted Gordon to become the player, and if the player says that's why he doesn't talk he is 100% right, and if you think about it it's quite a good reason:(I'm about to talk about the plot so SPOILER ALERT)
Gordon just graduated MIT with a Ph.D in theoretical physics, he only wanted to do science and signed and got accepted for Black Mesa Facility, but due to unforeseen consequences his life changed, always on the run from the military in the first game, saving the world(sort of), going to stasis and waking up 20 years later just to find out other aliens called the Combine rule earth, runs away from them, destroys them and prevents them from calling reinforcements, now he only has one mission, find Borealis, unfortunately the game ends with Eli's death and the rest is unknown, what is known is that he finds Borealis(he is Gordon Freeman after all he can do anything) but what happens when and after he finds it is unknown...man I just want a third episode, damn Gaben

So many great things about this. The acting is great by fan film standards, the tone and atmosphere are nearly perfect, and THAT FREEMAN ACTOR. Seriously, how did you find that guy? He looks EXACTLY like Gordon is depicted on the covers of the games, and his voice is perfect, exactly the kind of voice I'd expect Gordon to have. Not a super-badass deep or rough voice, a la Master Chief or Marcus Fenix, but not nearly as wimpy and nerdy as the other scientists. It really helps sell the fact that Gordon's just an average guy thrust into an insane situation, the catalyst to reveal how awesome he really is. As the saying goes, the right man in the wrong place makes all the difference.

This has amazed me! This is so many levels above regular independent films seen here on UA-cam. While they are all motivated by love to their source material, sadly a good number of them fail, because of not being able to hire good actors, bad props, incorrect lighting, bad writing, scenery that it is not believable... But this guys... they nailed it. They did everything right; the actors really convinced me; the monsters and the HEV suit look amazing and just the general way they handed this short makes me eager to see more of this.

I know I have no right to say this... but I wish you guys would make your kickstarter goal. Words are hollow I know well but if I wasn't the poor bastard that I am I'd fund this myself if I could... but... here I am typing this with microwave swedish meatballs on my desk as dinner >.> I am greatly saddened that solid good stuff like this is not on air unlike the garbage that promoted me to stop watching tv permanently.

I am a big fan of Half-Life and you made this on point with the feeling of the real game and i like that you guys used some original sound effect which was a major point of the feeling as well. If you ever make a creature teleport from Xen, please use the real sound effect for that also, as it was creepy in the original HL1. This is the best i have ever watched that is fanmade. You really took the feeling from Half-Life 1 into a real perspective. This is actually work that i would love to watch and pay for.
Keep the awesome work up and don't stress to much, take your time because stressing makes always a worse outcome.

I'm just jumping into this, but I'm in love with the way you're handling Gordon. It's nonsensical to not expect your protagonist to talk in a movie, so by just having him be so shook up that he can barely speak is a nice touch.

I played Half Life 2 back in the day when I was still a kid and didn't understand the story whatsoever, but boy oh boy, I've been missing out on these old gems! Just bought all Half Life games three days ago on the Steam summer sale...Finished Half Life 1 and it's two dlc's and currently playing Black Mesa...I'm completely intrigued by this awesome world and story Valve created.
So glad UA-cam recommended these movies to me. They are PHENOMENAL! Thank you Mr. I.J. Duncan, your devotion to this franchise and your projects is truly remarkable!

I really like it how Gordon here isn't just mute for no reason, but instead he is all concentrated and dipped into his thoughts.
The only thing that isn't great all the time in this video is the camera work - sometimes it's obvious that there wasn't enough place for the camera man, but, of course, it's totally excusable due to the lack of budget.
For now, this looks like the best movie in HL universe so far.
Great actors, showing really natural and plausible expressions. Great job. Thumbs up.
