As a prior military k-9 police officer, most dogs are retired to the immediate handler. If that handler can't or doesn't want to take the dog, the a previous handler will be notified. As for why they're put down so shortly after they've been retired is do to health issue, primarily hip dysplasia. Did you hear the officer tell the camera crew that the digs hind leg is starting to drag a little? First signs of hip dysplasia.
It's unbelievable that after so many years of dedication and protecting our community, they put those police dogs down. They use them and when the dogs get old just throw them away. I absolutely LOVE German Shepherds, having had three of my own in succession. They are fearless, brilliant, loyal, affectionate.... And I also deeply respect the officers of the law, who put their lives on the line daily. Thank you for a beautiful story.
Things like this REALLY warms my heart. Especially the UNBREAKABLE bond between a K-9 and his/her handler. I wish the best to the officer and his family. As well as the K-9.
I really like how he shows his/real emotions in this video. It's nice to see someone being real. And it makes me happy to see any dog/this dog and the connection between. I can literally see the joy he brings to this man's life and vice versa. Its incredible to me the connection we can have with animals. I really hope he never hurt anybody though.
Great story, thanks for sharing!!!! 👍 i grew up with Pedigree German Shepherds, i loved all of them, and will never forget Smokey going into protection mode!!!!! Hair up, and a growl to fear!!!!! 👍🐾
Military animals are killed after their service. It's the exception when you hear about the dog coming home from their service. The same goes for police dogs. Also, the video specifically said that the his previous dogs were killed when they retired.
In the video he said within a year or so. GSDs typically live 9-13 years; For police/military GSDs that 6-7 years of hard work and training. That takes a toll on their bodies, and likely explains why his previous two were put down within that year or so after retirement. Now if it was a Belgian Malinois, they could have expected a few more years after retirement. Surgery to treat these ailments aren't going to extend the life of these animals, and at the age and activity level required for them the surgery and healing process and time would be a major challenge that would present a risk to the dogs life in and of itself; Add in the cost, that after retirement would be on the owner/handler not the department and you can see exactly where the cost and benefit are outweighed by euthanasia.
I can understand where he is coming from, I still get emotional when I think of my German shepherd that I lost 20 years ago and hats off to him for retiring along with his best friend.
It’s really hard. I lost my 15 year old good boy and I bawled for weeks. But I’ve had dogs my whole life, and the best cure for the heartbreak is a new pup. It’s not the same, some dogs along the way are just extra special, but they all offer so much love and companionship that the joy you get is worth the pain when they’re gone. Just my .02, you sound like you’d be a great owner to a lucky dog.

I thought i read somewhere that not only dogs do love, but it's kinda like our romantic love, they get attached to whoever they fall in love with and will do anything to be with, that's why some dogs even die if their owners die. Not sure if true or not though.
Unfortunately they need a specific type of owner, these kind of dogs who have been trained to be sniffer dogs and sometimes dogs who defend there human partners can be very prey driven. They can end up hurting someone when they feel like they are prey, sad but true.

He and his K9 partner deserve to enjoy their retirement with the family. Not sure why they would deliberately put down a retired K9 unless really sick/suffering ?
Mark Sanders Well it depends. The dogs are usually trained with their patroling officer. When its time to retire, the handler has the option to take the dog. They tend to not fallow orders of other handlers, too well but some departments have a retirement for the animal in a kenel type deal. The next option is to put them down. Especially attack dogs. He was more of a drug dog not an attack. Also the handler wanted him and he was retiring also. So it was a match to begin with. The dog knows the family well andnhe will still protect them.
Sandy Rene' who wants to see an old dog suffer if they can’t afford surgery. It’s sad to see comments being angry for not understanding that yes they are loyal and it’s sad but there are many factors to why they should be put down. There is genetic problems, are they social to family or other pets, Are they going to be ok in public (depending on where you live) like a K-9 isn’t just a regular dog. When dog retires, keep taking the dog to walk daily or bring the dog with you in buying groceries or doing errands so dog would not feel the retirement. It's like shift of duty to a lighter tasks. The dog does not know that he/she is working as K9 it's a mere training & routine of each day activities... Dog could also the guard dog at home... Retrain the dog as guard dog at home... 🥰🤜🤛💖

The average lifespan of a GSD is 9-13 years, the average time as a working dog is 6-7 years. They didn't get put down because they retired, they got put down within a year due to health issues that don't fall on the pocketbook of the department and the risks posed with treating their health issues outweigh the benefits. 2-5 grand for surgery on an animal that thrives on being highly active and will not have the quality of life it's used to afterwards is more harmful than humanely euthanizing them. You try keeping an active animal penned up or form wanting to do their thing after surgery, and tell us how it goes; You're just going to watch the animal suffer through healing if they make it through without re-injuring themselves to need more surgery or to be put down anyway. They also weren't just put down immediately after retirement, they had a year at home, and you can see he kept the ashes from the first two; Meaning they were family to home.
I have been in love with German Shepherds since I was a small boy. For me there is no more beautiful, loyal, grateful and courageous breed of dog on the planet. I know many owners feel the same way about their particular chosen breed and that's ok. Whether it be a pit-bull, Can Corso, Rottweiler, Doberman Pinscher (which I have also owned...cool breed by the way), etc. each breed is special and uniquely fits the personality of the owner. For me that breed is the German Shepherd. I have always been attracted to shepherds but the day I fell in love with them is when the Hialeah Police Department brought a special police K-9 unit for a demonstration to the third graders at South Hialeah Elementary School in the spring of 1977. I was one of those students in the audience and I had with me my trusty Kodak Instamatic camera. I remember the photos I took of that dog as he was being commanded to tackle a suspect (another police officer) clothed in what can only be described as thick carpeting material. It was awesome!!!!!!
All these K-9's have served & protected the officers and the public for YEARS, risking their own lives. Many have been KIA on the police force, or injured. The PD acknowledges the K-9 "retired" (those that survive). Yet, not one single K-9 ever drew a pension. Many have been put down, for whatever reason... even department "policy". I hope & pray that someday police departments will regard their K-9s as true OFFICERS, and not some throw-away piece of equipment.
Imagine breaking into that house and being confronted by the same dog that bite your crack head ass when you ran from the police 6 years earlier and he’s looking at you like he remembers too 🤷♂️😂😂

Inspired my wife to get a GSD, she got her as a puppy. Came from a kennel that handles animals for Law Enforcement purposes. She is scary smart!!!
You don't offer retiring Police dogs to farmers or anyone? I get them being more 'intense' then regular dogs or could be triggered and might cause harm but to put them down after years of service is wrong. I hope it's not common. But then I think of just how many police dogs there are in the US. Thousands.
Are some dogs put down after they retired? This is inhumane!! Why can't they be adopted by their handlers?? We don't have the right to end a dog's life just because he is no longer a working dog!!
Instead of jumping to conclusions, why not listen to the whole story. Those poor dogs were not immediately "put down" after respectively retiring after 7 and 8 years of service. It`s clear that both "Norm" and Zako" did a year after they finished their military service. Unfortunately, this type of breed has problems with its back end. Most probably they were retired early due to health problems and after retirement, those issues become too much and that`s the most probable reason why euthanasia was used. No Police dog handler would "dispose of" his K9 due to age/retirement
If you get older and have health problems and those issues because too much, should your family put you to sleep? All police dogs that have tirelessly serviced the PD & community faithfully deserve a peaceful retirement just like their human handlers. No dog should be put down because it's outlived it's usefulness to law enforcement. These dogs should be made available for adoption as a pet to either other police officers or placed in a specialized rescue for adoption.

As for why they're put down so shortly after they've been retired is do to health issue, primarily hip dysplasia. Did you hear the officer tell the camera crew that the digs hind leg is starting to drag a little? First signs of hip dysplasia.

It's a good way to know if his daughters boyfriends are crack heads, lol.
It's unbelievable that after so many years of dedication and protecting our community, they put those police dogs down. They use them and when the dogs get old just throw them away. It's just mind boggling. So heartless! Those K9s not only protect our police officers but serve our community also. I'm so glad Cooper can retire and enjoy a real puppy life with his partner. Thank you for your service, both Sgt and Cooper. Much gratitude!!!
They said "less than a year". I suspect what happens is they are adopted out, but people can't handle them, and they get put down. Something has to be done about that.
That's animal cruelty and they should not be exempt from it.
well that house is safe
Crooked Defense is it though?
i have a couple german shepherds myself. it's safe
Crooked Defense not to be an ass or anything, but....*throws grenade into house* how safe is it now? ;) jk

Only people who've had a dog in their life, will understand the bond those two share.
Extremely agree.
Dogs don’t love? If I leave the house for 5 minutes when I come back my dogs throws me a party every time lol
Same!! I have 3 velcro dogs and after 9 years, their love is unconditional. When I return from a 20 minute grocery store run, they greet me like I've been gone a month. They are the best!!
i've literally NEVER heard not even ONE person say that. idk where the fuck this guy got that.
My dogs only have to go in the garden for 2 minutes and they come back in and act like they've been away for a month 😂
Mine gave me a fresh big dead lizard carcass as present....not that I don't appreciate his present....but he seemed disappointed when I threw it away. :-(
I had to leave my dog for a week recently because I was moving and couldn’t find a flight for him until a week after, so he stayed with a family friend for a week until he flew, and once he saw me again he was so happy, he hasn’t left my side for like 5 days since lol, he loves me and I love him too
My first GSD was the retired police dog I was brought up with and I was used for him to train on.! I took him on for the last years of his life having not seen him for the 2 previous years. He remembered me straight away. The best companion I ever had. Now onto my 12th GSD 4 decades later. Love em all but there will never be another LEX. They all deserve a chance as they are all so worthy.
There's nothin' like a dog. 💖
There was an old retired police dog who lived behind me. Poor thing so old. It would hear me and bark. I'd say hello and reach through the fence with a biscuit and some head scratching. He was 18 when he passed. I cried when they told me. I miss his happy face. God bless all handlers who take there dogs with them. And officer with skin or fur is still an officer!!
Is that how they say "Thank You" to those Service Dogs by putting them down after they're retired ??? They deserve much better than that, People !
@Thecarkid 11 is it too painful for them? i still dont get it. i had a non-working dog as a kid. he got hip problems at 8 but still lived to be 13. his walks were just shortened after he was 8.

He’s also a hero. Beautiful soul. Glad he’s with his handler. Yes dog do love. They do so much for us and they deserve a quiet loving house.
After all they do for us, it's shameful that they put them down.
Surgery to treat these ailments aren't going to extend the life of these animals, and at the age and activity level required for them the surgery and healing process and time would be a major challenge that would present a risk to the dogs life in and of itself; Add in the cost, that after retirement would be on the owner/handler not the department and you can see exactly where the cost and benefit are outweighed by euthanasia.
not when they are suffering with certain health issues. sometimes it's just better to euthanize them so they can't suffer anymore.
It's shameful how they are used in the first place. No dog should ever be used to violate someone's rights.
@@Potandthekettle How does police work violate someone's rights, exactly? Are you high right now?

What is wrong with the police department. Let people adopt this dogs.
Unfortunately they need a specific type of owner, these kind of dogs who have been trained to be sniffer dogs and sometimes dogs who defend there human partners can be very prey driven. They can end up hurting someone when they feel like they are prey, sad but true.

@@eerohughes it is true... no police department puts down dogs just for retiring... thats crazy
Putting down dogs for no reason deserved to be shot.
This dog is also developing a hip problem. Hip surgery for dogs is expensive.
They are dogs that work for their entire lives

I hate that they put the other two down! Surely there could have been an alternative!
I hope Cooper have a very happy retirement ❤🥰
I was going to be heartbroken if he didn’t get to keep him
I have been in love with German Shepherds since I was a small boy.

Inspired my wife to get a GSD,
she got her as a puppy.
Thousands.
They did the same in ww2 until a method was shown that can re train the dog from killer to a pet in a few short weeks.
That's got to be painful knowing an animal you've grown to love will be put down after it's retired 😣
@the captain.......then quit breeding dogs with that problem. It's piss poor breeding that results in that condition.
German shepherds are awesome mate and so are you officer. Love from Tasmania xxx
