Just done this on a mates van and would like to add my experience. I didn't bother with disconnecting any of the top hoses as they never got in my way, after messing around for ages to try and get my socket on the top nut that you cannot see (from the right) I realised that this one had a long bolt from the left hand side and not a nut.
My starter came out from the bottom as well, was worth watching your vid to get the basic idea though. thanks

I've literally just finished this job on my own van because all the mechanics were booked up. Used your video and the Haynes to great effect.
It's a very tight job though - getting the starter out is especially difficult. I'm not a mechanic but luckily had a garage full of assorted tools and a pit inherited from my grandad. Some of those 13s you can't get with a socket wrench so make sure you have some spanners to hand.
The exciter wire and main power feed are also quite difficult to get. I forgot about the exciter wire, but you can actually leave it on and take it off when you have better access. I managed to get the exciter using a socket wrench with a long extender which gives you just enough reach to get at it.

Just done this, yep it works. Cheers for the video!
    Tools needed are the following.
13mm spanner, use a small 1/4" ratchet, 7mm socket for hoses, 8mm socket for exciter, 13mm for main feed and all other bolts. And youll need a couple of extension bars to use ratchet for tightening exciter and 13mm main feed wire.
Took me about 4 hours. But if you watch the video a bunch of times and have tools handy you'll get it done quicker.

How about 2.0L engine model of Vauxhall Vivaro? Is it also this easy? Or on that model you can only extract starter motor from the front, not under the engine?

how can you get the exciter wire and everything back on from that angle? it seems like you'd be working almost blind. Dreading taking this off lol

To be honest you dont need to remove that metal bracket. Ive done it without taking it out. All i did I removed both boost pipes, then 3 bolts from the top and one from underneath. Only the starter motor bolts. Then same way as you. The gap between cat and driveshaft is enough to get it the bastard out.

thanks for the video. question - for the starter motor bolts what did you use to remove them - spanner or socket? one of the bolts on top of the housing is super tight to get any kind of leverage on, impact wrench or even hit it. so just wondering how you overcame tight bolts with very little space. any tips appreciated.

Just pull the drive shaft. If your stuck.
It’s all very well doing it this way, but doing a bolt up you cant see when re installing, unlikely.

Cheers for the video, I learned a lot, Will be having a go at your way in next couple of days as my Vivaro starter is playing up due to dirt, oil or possibly corrosion or all of the above.
Thanks for the upload as I get to know the jist of it all.
Haynes manual says something similar to your way.

Hi mate, I was wondering if you can help me please? I have Vauxhall vivaro 1.9 & I've got a blow on my exhaust. It's the section next to my manifold/cat/starter motor on a bend. Someone said I can get access to this by taking out my driveshaft, is this true? As I'm needing to weld it.
    Many thanks

      Thanks for your message,
I later had to do the turbo on this van and I didn't have to remove the drive shaft to get the cat unbolted, because I never actaully took the cat fully off I can't 100% say weather it will come straight out,
