  • This video shows how to access the 3 HVAC actuators on the ATS. The Left actuator controls the drivers side heat/air conditioning. The Right actuator controls the passenger heat/air conditioning. The Mode actuator controls the defrost, face, and floor selection of air.
If you do not have hot or cold air on the drivers side replace the left actuator. If you do not have hot or cold air on the passenger side replace the right actuator. If your vents are stuck in a specific setting suck as defrost then replace the mode actuator.
This video is by no means a step by step guide but what i learned from trying to replace an actuator myself. The driver side was stuck in heat mode so i replaced the left actuator and it fixed my problem. I hope it gives the DIYer the info to save themselves $1K or more from going to the dealer. Each actuator is about $20-$40 for an OEM Acdelco replacment.

Great video!!! Awesome job brother!! You saved me!! 👍👊🙏🏻 Also, I read the comments and some people were saying once the screws were out you needed to pry out the mode actuator and once it was out, use a screw driver to align the receiving slot to accept the new mode door actuator. This was definitely the case for me. I would have given up as I really had to pry on the actuator to get it out. Thanks again man, saved me around $1700!!! 👍👊🤝👍🙏🏻🙏🏻

Good video, but i was wondering if you know how the mode actuator is attached other than the 2 silver mounting screws? Mine clearly feels like it's being retained by a locking tab on the half round output shaft of the actuator to the mode door on the inside of the hvac frame.

If I am not mistaken you state that this is the "Left Actuator" do you by any chance have a part number so that I can order the new one? That would be amazing and very helpful :)

Please tell me did you only do the blend door or were you also able to remove mode door, my mode door is bad and my mechanic said he can’t get the mode door without removing the whole entire dash. This would be best and he tried something like this but was stuck with some clip or something. Wish it was the blend door as that seems easier

after watching this video, I removed only the mode door as my air was blowing out the defrost vents only. I had no issues getting to it or removing it. You will have to pry it out a bit as it seems it was seated in there pretty tight. Also, before installing the new one, I took a flat tip screwdriver and turned the receiving slot to align with the new mode actuator notch.

@@philiplubduck6107 I'll tell you what I can remember from 8 months ago! The top actuator that he points to around the 6:10 mark is the mode door actuator. It has 4 screws that hold it in place. They are hard to get to. Once you have those 4 screws out, you can pry the mode door actuator out. It is very hard to pry out. I started and stopped a few times and almost gave up, but then I decided it was either coming out or breaking (if it didn't come out I was paying the dealership to remove the dash anyway). Luckily, it came out. It's almost like it is glued or epoxied in there. My replacement mode door actuator did not have the little white arms that you can see at the 8 minute mark. Instead it just had an output shaft with a flat. That white piece stays in and attached to the various linkages when you pry the actuator out so you don't have to worry about any of the alignments he is talking about. Then when you reinstall the new actuator, you just line up the flat on the shaft, push it in, and replace the screws.
You do not need to do any of the steps he talks about with the blend door actuator if you are only replacing the mode door actuator. I had taken a bunch of those screws out initially but did not need to.
Disclaimer - mine was on a 2014 CTS but I think it all looks the same.

Awesome video. Thanks so much for making it. Unfortunately, because these parts fail so frequently, I will never buy another GM vehicle. (These were not rocket science to design and build, GM. You knew they would take many man-hours and many dollars to replace when they went bad, but you spec’d garbage components anyway.) So far, all three of my ATS’s actuators have failed, one has been replaced twice, and one is in need of replacement again. These are garbage parts that cost thousands in labor to replace. I’m done with GM after only one vehicle.

That’s really crappy, the car isn’t that old that they should fail. I just bought a 2013 ats and if mine break I’ll be pissed. I just replaced 2 of the 4 in my 05 Cadillac STS4. The electric motors they use are just junk!! Also had to replace on in my wife’s 03 explorer. But again those 2 cars are almost 20 years old so yeah.
