- This juggernaut of a startup looks set to drive off with a truckload of the hefty $4 trillion global freight market. And with its fleet of futuristic self-driving lorries already in service across the US and China, Tusimple can indeed claim its miles ahead of its rivals.
So who are these upstart truckers, what makes their technology worth its billion-dollar IPO, and can they stave off competition from the most beloved name in transportation?

As a former trucker, I will say that the driver shortage is largely due to trucking companies not paying fair wages. Trucking used to pay more when you take into account inflation. There are other reasons why drivers are quitting too. Poor treatment from their company, their companies refusing to fix truck issues and are giving them broken trucks/trailers, shippers and receivers often treat drivers like absolute dog shit, there's a massive truck parking shortage on an epic scale where in much of the country if you can't find a parking spot by 6pm you're kinda fucked. The department of transportation also often treats drivers like shit for no reason. Not all of them but still. For years I've been hearing about a driver shortage, yet if you keep an eye on indeed, trucking pay isn't really increasing. It's pay is rising 90% as fast as the cost of living whereas most jobs are raising wages like 80% as fast as the cost of living. It's still not good. Drivers are finally waking up to this bs and saying enough.
Yup, if you doubled the pay overnight, I guarantee there'd be zero shortage. It always comes down to the dollars and cents.
so i feel for the truckers, however the corporations are wanting self driving trucks so that they dont have to rely on humans, what i would suggest to all truck drivers is to adapt else somwhere down the line they will be unemployed

An unwillingness to pay workers and treat them humanely isn't a worker shortage. But self driving trucks do sound like a great way to prevent human error. Humans have really set the bar for driving awfully low.

I say between 2030 and 2035. The technology is getting better each year. In 15 years all of these trucks will be Level 5 autonomous meaning no human will be needed in the truck at any stage.

you can LEGALLY drive a TESLA SEMI on a Regular Drivers License.

As truck driver who almost jack kinfed today because as a human it's easy to get into a rhythm only to find the rhythm being cut short you have to step on the brakes like hotcakes. It happened to me today I wish I had this thing so that I can have an advantage. Not to mention the blind spot is something of a big deal many people die because of that when you're passing a truck you have two mirrors there's a big blind side so many people died because of that because when you switch someone is driving a tiny tiny car they tend to flip over I pancakes so we need this bad we're just human and let's just say that we're all distracted nowadays we need all the help you get that goes for all drivers not just truck drivers
How will solar flares impact the industry if/when they occur? How will each truck be prevented from being hacked or for that matter, jacked? We see that hackers WILL figure out how to get in to anything and so will thieves.
Legal hurdles, not just from truckers being up in arms about losing their livelihoods, but also simply it being a Chinese backed company. They will run into so much red tape that even if they can fine tune the tech, they will not get the green light for commercialization
Yep, Tusimple is being sued by their investors and is also being investigated by the Feds for the way they have reported their chinese connections.....i guess this whole thing was't "too simple"

So the people at TU Simple are setting their alarm clocks tonight to help them get up In the morning and go do a job that will destroy the average working mans job tomorrow.
As a point of information for those watching this video, this isn’t about trucking, this about a technology company & they’re going to supply the technology to enable these big rigs to transform into a smart truck that can navigate autonomously the nations highways & they are now in the proving phase of their technology & it will be up to each individual state in the US to agree that this is something that should be allowed & I don’t see how you say no if the technology proves out to be safer than humans or at least as safe as human drivers, which isn’t a very high bar in my opinion! So unlike Tesla who intends to control the entire operation from its concept to manufacture & production to the actual technology that will permit autonomous trucks to navigate the roads and highways of the nation & in fact the world, as their number one priority is the transitioning of the world to a sustainable energy solution, so they have a broader mission then say TuSimple past and they have tons of data already to formulate into a solution and if not TuSimple or Tesla then who, because this horse has left the barn and this Genie will not be put back in for a bottle, so technology is not subject to the whims of one company or one country as technology is being driven by a global competition and if a US based company doesn’t lead the way, then some other company in some other country will do it & that’s my take! Great general review of the company. A little more on the background of the CEO would be helpful. The Nvidia chip used here is widely used by most Chinese based autonomous driving companies.

How does this truck do a level 1 Dot inspection? All truck s are subject to random safety inspection of truck and trailer and subject to a national security inspection eather on the side of the road or in a scale house.
Electric trucks are not yet ideal for long haul trucking (the primary market TuSimple is aiming at). Where a Diesel truck can do 2100 miles without a fill-up, a Tesla Semi has a 500 mile max for its largest version. So, Tesla and TuSimple will not be competitors (yet). I expect Tesla will target regional trucking where TuSimple targets long haul trucking.
Why not trains 🚄 as well powered by AI?
already in the works, basically anything with a "pilot" from cars, trucks, trains, trams, ships, planes, etc will be automated.

The savings from using EVs to transport goods, wont reflect in lower prices for the consumer.
The companies will eat up that extra profit along with government bonuses.
EV producers and batteries suppliers will quickly notice the new margins for there customers.
Allowing them to increase the prices of EVs.

Yes a truck barrelling along at speed could cause a lot of damage. However as you pointed out at the beginning 95% of truck accidents are caused by human error. Take that human out of the equation and trucking accidents almost cease. Especially on long distance hub2hub trucking. The thing most humans say they don't want to do anyway.
Let's not forget there multiple ways to deal with the same problem and sometimes different ways carry different risks, it depents on how rigid the system is for handling that problem, meaning that whilst the human driver is removed from the cockpit, that doesnt not mean a human isnt still in the cockpit so to speak as the computer is following instructions coded by a human, menaing the human error is not completely eliminated

How is this Level 4? No way.

Level 2 -- Hands Off
Level 3 -- Eyes Off
Level 4 -- Mind Off
Level 5 -- Steering Off
At Level 4...no driver attention is ever needed.
I think it's hard to get to level 4 without geofencing. Tesla is like a level 2- 3.
Waymo with geofencing does level 4 . That is full self driving in specific locations

This is amazing technology, but I don't see it passing US regulations by 2024. People would be too afraid of let this beasts roam freely on the highways. Give it a few more years when a good number of people have transitioned to personal self driving cars to have a chance.
TESLA already has Billions of miles of DATA, so Regulators will feel PRESSURE to give TESLA the GO AHEAD.
Autonomous vehicle are Already PERMITTED in the State of FLORIDA and California is also a Natural.
@@markplott4820 yes, but that's just 2 states. These trucks have to drive through many states which makes it necessary to have the corresponding licenses to do so in each state. The US is really slow for changes of this kind. I really don't see it happening in 3 years.

and TRUCKERS will need to Change too as many States have Adopted switching to ALL EV by 2040 for ALL MED/HD Trucks and SEMI's .
You are right. I see it sometimes between 2028 and 2032. Not earlier. In China it will be around 2023/2024 in geofenced roads. In other parts of the world it will be handled similarly. In Germany its already permitted using a far inferior system by Mercedes up to 60 km/h.

Why you would let a (lets say, at best) an adversary be in control of transportation across your nation is beyond me. I am a mug and can see that if it turns ugly at any stage, they could bring your whole country down by just turning off your logistics. The truck would have software, always connected, almost certainly back to the foreign company. That is just crazy....

the TESLA SEMI is Thousands of KG less than TruSimple .
and the TESLA SEMI are all STREEMLINED and built with ALL Composite Monocoque materiels .
the TESLA 4 Electric Traction motors are Extremely efficient and can Accelerate the SEMI to 0 - 60 under 3 Seconds , FASTER than a PORSCHE 911.

To be honest, we need to get big trucks off the roads entirely. Why? Because most of the wear and tear on modern roads comes from heavy transport vehicles. If they weren't on the roads, we would have to repair and replace roads far less often, lasting 100-200 years if only normal vehicles were allowed. This is one secret they don't want you to know, because roads are a huge cost burden on cities, and they don't want to be shown as the true cause of crumbling roads. In the long run, we would save trillions of dollars by getting transport vehicles off the roads, along with having safer roads. But it's cheaper for them to offload the damage costs onto the consumer.
And how would you distribute goods? Our rail system is not built for anything other than long-haul; you still need local distribution.

I think you guys don't realize how much these guys (making the video) have no idea what they're talking about. It's like a very cheap ad for Tusimple. First of, autonomous cars / trucks crash more than human drivers. Pretending the opposite is just a lie. Also, trucks could then be hacked, or the goods could be stolen... Third, it couldn't drive in many weather conditions like storm, snow, and so on. Insurances will in no way be cheaper since we actually have no idea who's gonna be responsible in case of crash. Fourth, what would the truck do if a tire blows up? Well actually there are more problems than that but I'm too lazy to write them down.

This was a video about trucks delivering goods, not people. How would high speed rail deliver goods to where they need to go or carry freight. We already know how to build high speed rail, it's just 100 million per mile for delivering people isn't all that useful. Many more can work from home now too.

You’re ignoring the fact that ice trucks have a far greater cargo capacity than electric trucks, which negates the higher maintenance costs. Dont forget to Factor in charging vs refueling time as well.
@@hi-gf5yl That would be two very valid points, but since the Tesla Semi has been announced at having the same capacity as a diesel equivalent. The new 4680 battery cell format allows for greater energy density and charging time, so the loading & unloading will remain the bottleneck.
Like I said, combustion trucks will only survive if the Tesla semi fails.
@@brunoethier896 even if the tesla semi does have the same load capacity, its range is still an issue. Diesel trucks have a range of 900 miles compared to the semi’s measly 500. Electric trucks will certainly have applications in transporting goods short distances, but for long haul trucking, diesel trucks are superior. Electric trucks might replace all diesel trucks in the future, but that future is still a ways away.
