Personal In Ear Monitor Mixes on a Budget

  • I answer a question sent to me on facebook. How do I give each memeber of my worship team their own in ear monitor mix? Oh... and we are on a budget. In this video I show the equipment needed to get personal in ear monitor mixes to at least eight different people and be able to build on the equipment you purchased. The budget was $1500 - $3000, so I give a $1.5K and $3k option. I hope this is helpful to others.
    The hardware used is in the Behringer ecosystem. The X32 Mixer, SD16 Stage Box, Powerplay P2 or Powerplay P16-m, as always Hosa cables and if you are really on a budget... XR18 mixer.

    I used the XR18 for this for a few years it is really great (get a good wireless router). Just recently upgraded to X32 Compact and got Stereo IEMs working. Thanks for this info.

    Hi Kennis, and thanks for this interesting video. I've been looking at budget iem options too. One idea I saw (maybe even on your channel :) was too use a two channel mixer for each band member. Each player gets a band mix through one channel, and themselves through the other. They can mix those two components to their own liking. Not as flexible as the solution you proposed here, possibly cheaper and simpler.

    We have been running an in ear system for years. In the rack is 16ch splitter snake. One side into XR18 with six aux outs. IEMs are sennheiser chinese knockoffs I purchased off ebay Everyone in the band has their own mix and they each control their own mix. I did not give them a choice. Works great. We play a few weekends a month. The splitter snake has been great to use at venues with their own PA and we can use our in ears and their soundguy only worries about FOH.

    Nice expandable and versatile setup, I like the X32 as a most versstile mixer. If I read right they have 5 members that need their idividual mixes.
    IMHO to stay within theitr first quotedbudget of $1500 and re using as much of the equipment in their church.
    IMHO the Zoom Lifetrak L20(R) Series would be more within their initial budget range.
    The Lifetrak L-20 is a digital Mixer with 6 individual Monitor outs at $100 (MSRP) that can make use of their exoisting cabling and might only need a few XLR to 14/" TRS adapters for the monitor mix outs or id going the remote controlled route the Livetrak L20R ($900) can be used as stahgebox mixer without the need of a snake. Regardless to route the individual monitor mix to each menber via a 1/4TRS to XLR cable and using the Behringer P2 headphone amp.
    this way the complete solution would run about $1200-$1300 total (Mixer $900 or $1000, plus 5x P2 at $200 and 5x 25' 1/4-XLR cable at $100) before taxes and discounts.
    Not as expandable as your solution but well under initial budget and the sound person usually does the mixing initially anyways and teh band member can adjust the volume themselves.
    Just a quick thought as an alternative budget solution that still fits the requirements (5 band members).

    We were running a Behringer Xenyx 2442 board along with powered floor wedges. It gave us two monitor mixes though I could re-assign one of the effects sends to make a third and by splitting out inputs could create "FOH + more me" style mixes. Then a couple of years ago we bought the XR18 for £320. Another £100 for the Behringer 8 channel headphone mixer and £20 for the loom between the two. We can have six monitor mixes and I can do a couple of "FOH + more me" type mixes if required. Two of the band have their own wireless sets the others are hard wired from the headphone amp, using KZ, CCA or TRN in-ears. Mixer, cables, in-ears, the whole lot has cost less than £600. Front of house is controlled from a laptop. Everyone in the band uses their own phone or android tablet loaded with their sheetmusic/lyrics, which also allows them to control their own monitor mix. Once we got used to it the set up has worked great. Removing monitor wedges has made life so much easier, and front of house sound so much better.

    We also have the ultranet distributor aviom too.

    Upgrading our system at church - Currently have a Behringer x32 coupled with an older model Hearback Technologies System that has seen it's day - We have XLR access via custom recessed plates on the stage that supports several musicians and vocalists that fed the console via long run analog snake - Our desire is to move our Lead/Rhythm/Vocalist, Vocalist 2, and Vocalist 3 to a wireless configuration and have a wired mixer configuration for Drums/Keys/Bass to save a bit of money as they are stationary - Vocalist are currently on wired mics - Our main objective is to have "individual" mixes for each band member to tailor all instruments and vocals to their preferred mix via wireless/wired setup - Would love to hear your thoughts on a workable wireless/wired system - Budget is a little flexible - Mega thanks mate...

    Between X32 Compact + SD16 stagebox and XR18 there's good middle ground: X32 Rack. It costs about $900, and when headless XR18 is an option -- it makes sense to take a look at X32 Rack.
    When on a budget I'd much rather sacrifice motorized faders instead of ability to extend my system later on

    Interested in the the Air18. Could I go main outs to a power amp then out daisy chained floor monitors. Then AUX outs to either a P2 for iem's? And I want to make sure I understand the AUX outs. Can they be be controlled individually do each aux out has its own mix? I would like to use power wedges to each performer with their own mix. And lastly, can each performer use their own phones to control that particular aux out mix? And can they all be done simultaneously? Thanks for any feedback.

    • @TedGravlin
      @TedGravlin Рік тому

      The main outs would normally be used to feed the Front Of House speakers. (what the audience hears) Depending on the what those speakers are they might be power amps into main house speakers ... OR ... lots of main speakers these days are powered speakers the don't need power amps.
      Each aux is a separate mix. Those mixes can be controlled by each performer using their own phone (or an ipad if you prefer a larger screen). The best way to do that is to use a router connected to the XR18 to create your own little computer network that the phones connect to with wifi. Side note I usually also hard wire a laptop into the router with a cat 5 cable so that I always have a backup hard wired way to control everything if wifi starts getting unreliable. Rare but it happens.
      So you have everything onstage connected to inputs. You create individual mixes for each player (up to 6 of them) using their phones. Someone is mixing the front of house into whatever speaker system that is..... what's missing? A way for each performer to actually hear their mix.
      Each of the aux outs can be connected separately to either a wedge speaker or some type of IEM. If, say, the guitar player prefers a wedge it can either be a power amp and speaker... or a powered speaker. Each speaker would need its own power amp. No daisy chaining. Because you plug the his aux connector into his power amp (or powered speaker). 99% of the time if he's using a wedge he doesn't also use a P2 (or any other type of IEM).
      If a player wants an IEM then connect the aux out to whatever that system is. The most basic part of an IEM is some kind headphone amp that has a volume knob connected to a set of IEM earplugs. (that's what the P2 is .. a tiny amp to drive the earphones). A more sophisticated system is some kind of wireless IEM transmitter/receiver. Lots of options here but it often gets pricey. In that case you plug an XLR cable into the transmitter and then the receiver/beltpack has the headphone amp built in with a volume knob.
      Couple extra features often over looked. It says 6 aux outs.... but you can also pair two auxes together to get stereo mixes instead of mono. So you get any combination of mono or stereo mixes such as 6 mono, or 1 stereo and 4 mono, or 2 stereo and 2 mono. Why stereo? Mono works ok. But both ears just hear the same thing all mixed together. (Wedges are always mono BTW) But a stereo IEM mix can help a performer "pick out" individual instrument from the audible mess. Lets say you have two guitars. Pan one a bit left and the other a bit right. Now your brain can more easily figure out who's playing what.
      Another tip. Often it's helpful to not put EVERYTHING into an IEM mix. Just the parts you need hear more of to perform well. Example... I'm a guitar player that sings. So I certainly need my own vocal and my own guitar my mix a bit louder than everything else. I also need the other vocalists (maybe just slightly quieter) so that I can match their pitch etc. I also might need might need some of the other guitar player or keyboards to match to their playing. What I DON'T need is the bass guitar or the kick drum. I can feel the thump onstage without it being in my ears and I trust that the bass player knows what he's doing. Less stuff usually sounds clearer. I add in the hi hat or something similar to keep good timing. I'm not mixing a record. I'm just trying to play and sing well.

    Hey,
    Just a quick question as I'm completely new to all of this. I don't really get what the digital snake does. I mean if your digital mixer has 16 ins and 8 outs, just as the digital snake, couldn't you just plug everything into the digital mixer and then get your outs for your inears out of the outs of the digital mixer?

    • @RealRekcin
      @RealRekcin 2 роки тому +1

      You could do that, but then you would need to have the mixer close to the stage. The snake gives you the ability to have the mixer in the back of the room etc.

    32 inputs. that's why its an x32. it has 32 channels. you can count 32 right on the picture in your video. why would it have 40 inputs if it only has 32 channels in the mixer?

    • @colinhough5664
      @colinhough5664 3 роки тому

      32 is how many channels it can process. You can have 40 inputs, but only 32 will have all the features avaliable.

    • @Bobby_Uterus
      @Bobby_Uterus 3 роки тому

      You can have more than 40 inputs using multiple stage boxes but you can still only use 32 inputs simultaneously from any combination of AES sources. I was only pointing out how stupid it was to say it had 40 inputs when it is clearly called an X32. It would be called the X40 if it had 40 channels. It’s pointless to have 40 localized input if you can only process 32 of them at a time. I mean I guess it can save you from doing some patching at the physical inputs but that’s about it. Typically mixing boards have the same amount of local input as processing channels.

    "There's no way you can guess what everybody is hearing".... mon frere, mixing IS exactly that. It's a giant averaging system that you use intuition and experience to work through. And I've handled a live mix in the house and 8 independent stage mixes for years simultaneously... you don't "guess".. you PFL the mix and you listen. OH.. and that was an analogue system. Actual knobs and wires and stuff hey LOL.

    • @RealRekcin
      @RealRekcin 2 роки тому

      Yeah, but if you have 8 people asking for adjustments to their mix throughout a show, it's a huge distraction. It's much better to let the musicians adjust their own mix. I've done it both ways, and it's a LOT better letting the artist adjust their own IEM mix.

    • @TheBassLizard
      @TheBassLizard 2 роки тому

      @@RealRekcin "distraction"? not if it's part of the job it's not.. it's a function of the position. The artist's monitor mix is not an inconvenience for you.. it's your JOB at that point. They're on stage to perform, not run monitors. Go ahead, tell Rihanna or Mick Jagger to run their own IEM's. If you're talking about running monitors from FOH.. it's even EASIER now! good god man, try using an analog console, 40 inputs of live theatre with mutes, eq changes, monitor adjustments, effects changes and supplemental audio cues on DAT (if you're lucky) and reading your cues out of a notebook, and manually setting up every "scene" before you start that song! Simply put on a set of cans and adjust the vocal for the singer, it's really not that hard. I don't care who you've mixed or for how long... you're not going to get any kind of a FOH sound without the artist being able to hear what they're doing.

    • @RealRekcin
      @RealRekcin 2 роки тому

      @@TheBassLizard Well, all I can do is speak from my experience. I run sound for a 5 time grammy award winning group on a regular basis and they prefer to have Stereo IEMs and tweak the mix themselves. You can't just know what they want it to sound like, unless you go through some serious rehearsals etc. But my guys like to pan certain things to the left & right, and they like to make changes throughout the show. But I agree that a big artist like Rihanna or Mick will not do their own mix, but their FOH guy won't be doing it either. They have a monitor guy for that. I come from the analog world too, but have embraced the digital now. I can't believe how much things have changed. And some not for the better. A lot of people can't even identify frequencies anymore or EQ a room. They have a machine to do that for them... Have a good day.

I just (apparently mistakenly) thought you were being lazy at first. I also agree that with the tech available now, as a bassist/vocalist (hack level only), I love being able to be in control of my mix. So now that I understand your angle better.. ok sure. Seems a bit sad that the "monitor mixer" job might fade out, some, doesn't it? I have to agree that if they "will" and "can".. well they're going to have nobody to blame if they hate the mix lol.
