Just make sure you request their gen2 ospw. They shipped me out a gen1, when the gen2 had already been out; I assumed I would be receiving the gen2. It created shifting issues. In the top gears, there was significant shift delay, or no shift would occur. I had it installed and adjusted by my lbs. I also took it to a second lbs to confirm the issue. Even with the updated design, it doesn't shift as smooth or quickly as the factory cage. It still sticks when shifting up/down from the top gear.
@@CharlesOuimet the gen2 gives the ospw more shifting leverage due to the shorter cage, but it's still not 100% the same performance as the factory unit. Nova did send me out a new cage, but just the cage. I had go disassemble/reassemble, which is annoying. I also brought it back to my lbs to have it professionally adjusted again. All-in-all it was $30x2 for labor and the time spent to swap pulley wheels.
One of the most important aspects of a design like this is the increase in noise! When I have used alloy pulley wheels I just couldn't put up with the increased noise of the chain running through the alloy jockey wheels. The factory Shimano are a polymer design which are silent in operation. I assume the Nova ones produce more noise over the factory supplied versions?
It spins a lot, but in your fingers when is completely unloaded, which doesn't replicate the conditions at the rear mech arm. The pulley wheel will normally be loaded by the chain tension, but also laterally, and because it is much bigger diameter than the DA one, the lateral loading is much bigger and this may as well cancel any gains from the reduced bearing drag.
@@CharlesOuimet Which is precisely why I have a Look "aero" frame with internal cable routing and massively overpriced Campag Bora wheels, being a 75kg porker :).
I put the Ceramicspeed one on my bike when I got the new DuraAce groupset so I could run 53/39 up front and have a 34 tooth gear on the back. Is the extra gearing range worth it? If you like long rides and bikepacking, I'd say yes. It worked out to $100 per tooth compared to the 11-28 I originally could run on the rear.
I wouldn't suggest go with a 34t cassette because you'll need you B-Screw all the way it to clear the 34 gear, resulting in a big distance in the middle of the casette and poor shifting. You should get a 52-34 crank with 11-28 or 30 casette. You'll climb easier and still go fast in decents!
I need to replace the cage of my Dura Ace derailleur (R9100). Since inception the arm has a sort of lateral play that makes certain gears (especially with the large ring) incredibly noisy. Maybe it's the time to give Nova a chance!
I run oversize jockey wheels too(16t top and bottom on ultegra 8000) but never change the cage and did a bit of a hack by filing it down to give enough clearance for the jockey wheels and chain. So far over 1000km and no issues and no chain or jockey wheels rub against the rear dee whatsoever. Have you ever tried running oval chainring?
@@CharlesOuimet Cool! Looking forward to see your review on oval chain ring(doesn't matter which brand and size or whatever is like biopace etc etc). I am going to send you the picture of my oversize jockey wheels to your instagram message and see what you think. lol
Hey. Charles. Is there a easy way to take off the wheel with OSPW? I just installed on my Di2 RD-R9150 and I having difficulty taking off my wheel. The upper pulley wheel and the smallest cog will not pass with chain installed (Derailleur tilled right back, as far as it can go). Not enough gap to pass through but with out the chain no problem. Would you have some trick to do this easy way?
Found the solution Charles. It has to be Smalll-Small state to take the wheel off. Using Full-Syncro mode it won't go down to small cog but the wheel just come off on 5th cog.
I struggle with this ospw..The chain touch the carbon plate when running biggest chainring and biggest cog on cassette. Any tips?? Dura ace 9150 di2 derailleur running 11-30 cassette and 50/34 chainrings.
Hi you said that ospw will give aero drag so the watt gain will become 0...does it mean using the normal pulley nova ride will give me extra watt gain?
Hey Charles! Not sure if anyone has asked , but you had mentioned in one of the videos that if getting the OSPWs we have to get a longer chain. Did you get a longer chain? if so, what size did you get? or how can we determine what size to get? I'm planning to get a NOVA OSPW like the one you got but in red! Great video!
Hey! it's a couple longer links longer, but for my builds I know I always ended up adding a Nova OSPW, so when first installing my chain I do keep that in consideration and leave it as long as possible (while working well) on the shimano pulley, so when I add the Nova I don't need to change the chain. If your current chain is the exact size for shimano, it might still work with Nova, but might also have too much tension and will no shift the best. Give it a try! Or just change the chain right away because anyways they wear out every 5-8 000 kilometers :)
Why not just replace the shimano pulley wheels with same size pulley wheels with ceramic bearings, eg. BBB rollerboys or similar. You won't gain weight that way?
Okay, but friction and drag are not necessarily a bad thing. You have to put in more work to get to where you are going on your bike … that is true, but at the same time you are also burning up more calories and making your heart stronger so there is a significant health/fitness benefit.
Simply my honest opinion about a product I believe in. If it was shit, I'd tell everyone. I'm always transparent with product reviews. Just look at the hammerhead one when I stated all the flaws or my SOUKE clothing review
A bit harsh here buddy! I love the style it gives to my bike and the color match. Same way someone with a porche 911 upgrade the rear spoiler from the stock one. Not for performance, but for style ;) I feel this is the same here. 250$ isn't that much money considering the price of bikes these days
So the whole purpose the pulley wheels and cage exist is to allow gear shifting. So let's manufacture and sell an expensive product that completely degrades the entire purpose of the mechanism! Oh but wait, we fixed it guys! Now (supposedly) it shifts better than our original high-priced performance degrading design! No thanks. No bike jewelry for me.
Conclusion : Completely useless piece of overhyped gadget junk that gives you no advantage at all. Spending 280$ to "look cool" (which in itself is very debatable, imo) is completely absurd. The cycling market has become so superficial, I can't believe people are buying the marketing crap manufacturers are pushing relentlessly. But hey, you do what you want... I don't mind a sponsored video if that helps your channel, but it's a shame that people who don't know better will spend their hard earn cash on such a futile piece of equipment.
Seems like a legit improvement over the bushing pulleys, but I'm not sure I could justify replacing DuraAce pulleys. But the colors ARE enticing!
They are!!
I'm doing a new 12S Dura Ace build & the stock pulley bearings just plain SUCK compared to the Nova Ride setup. Night & day difference!

Are you rd Gs (medium cage) version...ospw better for short cage rd...if you use medium rd with ospw you will have problem with shifting performance

good point! I didn't hear any noise increase as drivetrain noise from casette and crank makes the most amount of noise

Do you need to change the chain when converting to oversize pulley?
Nope no need. Just adjust the b tension and tune a bit and you are good to go.
You'll need a longer chain of course.
Hi Zack !
Yes indeed you need a longer chain, and it's better to set a new chain for new components

Longer chain is recommended! But I got it worked with same size chain, simply not optimal for shifting!

Run a smaller cassette, in my case a 30 is harder to adjust. maybe go down to a 11-28. You'll be fine climbing with your 34 up front :)
I can’t find the standard pulley wheels on there website you showed at the end of the video
There u go!

I would like to go with Nova ride however I have a 10spd and they don't make an ospw for 10s I've only found one made by ceramic speed.
ah that's unfortunate!

en effet!!
you said that OSPW will have aero loss or increase aero drag...so is it better to change the original wheels in terms of saving watts?
That would be an amazing option!

Good question! I don't think so 😅

Thank you man!
looks cool, does anyone sell these in Canada? Ontario
At 6:02, is it just me or the ospw just sits weird at that cassette position unlike the stock derailleur.
Normal. It's the jockey wheels that making it look weird. Same as my 16t on normal cage.
yeah thats normal with the ospw

So unlike other OSPWs which are really OPPWs(overpriced pulley wheels), these are RPPWs(reasonably priced pulley wheels)?
AHAHAHAH Love this, I guess so? hehe
I use oversized pulley. Not from ceramic speed. The one reason for using oversized pulley is ease of cleaning.
agreed!
Seems like a useless upgrade
Yeah in some sort :) It's like putting spinning mags on a honda civic
ahhh but you forgot the two links in your chain that you don't need. Less resistance there and weight too...
