Ya know. Through happenstance I ended up with a ton of high end tool storage, NewAge Shelving set, Milwaukee 72" tool chest etc etc. I have a awesome shop. Then.. realized most my drawers are empty. What tools I do have are mostly hodgepodge. Sooo now I am saving up (I'm retired now, looking to do the UA-cam thing for fun, but money is tight.) to get some new tools for once for all these projects I have planned. Long story short, I appreciate your reviews. I'm not a tool snob who is brand loyal to anyone at the moment, so this allows me to see what folks are putting through there paces and listen to your advice.
Purchased the 290 piece and the box and drawers are garbage, they get stuck, hard to slide in and out, returned it and just bought the 194 piece that’s a carrying case, it’s really nice plus it has more deep sockets and wrenches then the 290 piece one, most of the extras on the larger amount are small screw driver tips and torex tips which u really don’t use
I just picked up that Huskie set for my son. He is going to start driving and I am making a kit to put in the back of his truck. That Craftsman set is nice, too. Thanks for the comparison.
as an industrial Mechanic, my bag is full of Husky, and Stanley tools. Good enuf to get the job done, but if you lose one not a big deal! My Tektons came home after 3 days at the new job
Ive just bought one of those Husky 290 piece sets at HD for $169 primarily for the deep sockets and ring wrenches. I have other Gedore blue, Fixman and Ampro socket sets that go over 30mm and have universal joins etc in both 1/2 inch and 3/8. This Husky set is clearly built to a price but for $169 its extensive enough and i do like that case but its far from the only socket set ill need and i trust my Gedore rachets more as they feel a lot more robust but those sets cost a lot more. I too have felt the chrome feels like its peeling off off the edges of the sockets. These do win the beauty contest vs the Gedore but these feel nowhere near as sturdy. For $169, they're great! for their normal price of $254, id rather buy pieces individually i need from Gedore etc.
Old school mechanic here, I bought the 290pc husky set it was on sale at the time & for a decent price at $129.99. So I gut it they way I wanted to work for me. First off I decided to have my metric 12pt & my SAE 6pt. Because the way husky had the 6pt & 12pt were way off in 1/2, 3/8, & 1/4 drive sockets. So I customize the way I needed to be, first off I got rid of the combination wrenches & went with Olsa 6pt ratcheting wrench set for the SAE side & for the Metric side I went with Gearwrench 12pt ratcheting wrenches, which by the way fit perfectly in the molded slots. As far as my drive ratchets, I went with the Tekton button release 90th drive ratchet on the 1/2 & 3/8 & for the 1/4 drive ratchet I went with the gearwrench 120xp which is not button release. All three drive ratchets fit well in the molded slots. As for the socket 1/2 drive I went with the Tekton 6pt SAE & for Metric I went gearwrench 12pt sockets. For 3/8 sockets I went with husky 6pt & gearwrench 12pt. As for 1/4 sockets went with Tekton SAE 6pt & 12pt metric gearwrench That also goes for both deep and shallow in the brands I list above. As far as the space for were the allens were stored. I removed them & replace them with the gearwrench 20pc extension set along with the husky 3/8 button release locking flex head drive ratchet which all those items fit perfectly well in that space. As for the drawers not sliding out when carrying it around. As when you open the top to reveal the large sockets. I drilled a hole 🕳 that goes through both drawers from top to bottom, and slid a long heavy duty pin that goes through the holes to support the drawer from falling out when when lugging the box around. Overall cool review. But hay that's just my opinion on the husky 290pc tool box.
Great video as always.....Nailed down almost all the tool sets from 99 to 199 range with their advantages and disadvantages. Its very helpful to make informed decision from your videos. I am planning to start my diy projects hence your videos are very helpful in distlling out the options. Keep up the great work!!!
I've got quite a few sets myself. So far out of the budget options my preference is the Husky ratchets. Your custom kit looks similar sized to one of my smaller ones. My best custom kit uses one of the three drawer military portable tool chests. Very water resistant, impact resistant, drawers come out for setting up a work area, has wheels to make it rolling, and it can lock too. It's awesome for when a friend needs help at his shop, I basically get to take along my own tool truck with that case :)
I have the husky tool set. Bought it a home depot during the black Friday sale. It was 149$ & add the tax total was like 178$ I use the tool set more for the inside house work. Building book shelves, desks, chairs, etc, that's the tool set is mostly used for. Also the wrenches in the tool set. If you buy the husky wratchet 30 piece tool set, those wrenches will fit in the grooves. So now my husky tool set has wratchet wrenches making it that much better. I also have a craftsmen tool set like 278 piece, & that is for outside, working on cars & garage type.
I think Husky messed up with so many 12 point sockets. Having them in 1/2 drive is damn near the norm, but no reason to have them in 3/8 as well. Real interested to see your custom set. I’ve been wanting to throw together a road call bag for myself at work. We’ve got a service truck, but it’s fairly limited in what it has on it.
I bought the $99 Craftsman last time. It’s been great. I am interested in the new Husky 144 tooth ratchets though. The heads look smaller and the handles are longer, both pluses IMO
Thanks for making this video. I look forward to these high quality videos. I have not been able find this set in my area. So at least I can see it here. I finally bought the Craftsman. I did return it when I had problems with the ratchets. Then I went and bought 290 piece Husky. I am very happy with it. I can’t believe it does not come with a 13 mm wrench!
I have been looking for some time, on tool sets, your videos have been very helpful, thanks. I will be going out on black Friday to check prices, wish me good luck, lol, take care.
i bought one of these for myself this last month so i can work on my car, being a DIY guy and new to tools it has so far been solid but the spilling out due to the flaps has been my biggest gripe. If i win that give away I'd gift the set to my old man he's got tools from when I was a kid and its time for him to get an upgrade.
Just checking in here again! The Craftsman 216-Piece is still the Pound for Pound King of these type of boxed sets!😂 Even against the newer ones with more pieces of fluff! I actually added all the missing skipped sockets and additional bigger ones that all fit nicely in the trays.
Great video again, your very thorough. Im trying to think what else is want to know about but you covered most points. Thanks for the video! Going to try setting up a bag/ box to toss in the tools and bits i need for a specific job while still keeping organized. Also planning on tagging/labeling my tools so i don't mix em up, but that's not a priority.
I bought the Husky 290 a year ago. My two biggest gripes are that most sizes are spread across multiple compartments / drawers, making it hard to just take one section to where you may need it. At the same time, the case is not balanced front to back. If you pick it up by the handle, it leans heavily forward, which causes the drawers to push on the flaps and fall out, spilling the contents. The only way to carry it by the handle is to use a second hand underneath to hold it level. Since it got it as a home kit, these two issues combined have been a real pain. I do really like what it has in the kit, but I’ve actually been thinking of selling it and getting either the Craftsman 216 or the Gear Wrench sets. The other option is to just move the contents to another storage solution and ditch the box.
I gave my whole Chrome Socket Set to my Little Brother so he has his own Tools to Work on things, now I'm left with No Chrome, but it was Worth it! 🔨👍😁👍🔧
For the extra $50, the 290pc Husky gives you a much better selection of sizes than the 270pc Husky. The 270pc skips more or excludes more. I bought the 290pc Husky 1yr ago. Ratchets are very nice for the price and warranty is simply walking in to Home Depot. Good selection of sizes. Only 24x 12-point in 3/8. All 1/2 are 12pt, but this seems to be the standard these days unfortunately. Main gripe is there's no 13mm wrench....but I snuck it into the case.
I know what you mean. I bought so many husky tools during the black Friday sale. I bought this one. The 60$ 30 piece wratchet set. The 25 extra lil pieces like u joints, extension. 3/8 torque wrench, Cresent 🔧& maybe some flashlights . Anyways, the wratchet husky wrenches fit in the 290 tool set grooves. So I traded them to the set. & sure the 13mm wrench isn't there, but the 1/2 wrench technically is the same. . .
Such a great series. Wouldn’t hurt to add in things like I notice, how easy is the set to carry? How bulky are the boxes? Can they fit in a tool box in the bed of the truck easy? Under or behind a seat? Just a few more talking points to help improve the channel. How easy are the sockets to read? I’ve had lovably sockets have the numbers rub off making it impossible to tell.
Nice review and thanks. I do like Husky for the quick swap out at a local HD. Tekton for quality and price would be my go to brand. I also do like Sunex, they offer quality tools too and have a large variety available
Great breakdown a good case is always a breaking point. The craftsman is my choice also. Rebuilding was a victim in neighborhood so starting from scratch. Thanks
Great video as always. Very thoughtful breakdown of the two sets with solid comparisons and an obviously unbiased opinion. Thank you, and keep up the great work!
Very good video, I was in a toss up between the Pittsburgh and the husky set as a Christmas present for myself that my wife is getting me. Because of shipping mainly and not being able to get the 20% off discount from HF my wife chose the husky set. So I'm very happy you looked into like this. Of course HF dropped the 20% of sale after she purchased the husky 🙄. But honestly I've been into VWs and Audis for over 25 years and just started doing my own. Oil changes and brakes so the husky will definitely get me in the right direction. Thanks again for video, great 👍.
The real deal was the Home Depot husky 268 piece tool set. It had wrenches up to 7/8 and 22 mm. But Home Depot quit selling it about 3 years ago it was $99.99 .
Thank you for the informative video. My friend has this set but the drawer are in red and the sockets that are in the first drawer (from the top) interfere with the housing when pushing the drawer back to its place. So he has to push the drawer a bit downward to close it. The sockets on that drawer are placed vertically (shallow sockets) and I think they are a bit too tall. Is this issue normal? Thanks.
I have a older craftsman tool set from Sears. Bought it when I didn’t know much about mechanic tools, with that being said I don’t like what came with the set, too much bits. The husky looks nice though.
@@projectkarr Thank you sir and thank you for these videos. Your approach is the only method that reflects the extreme circumstances I have experienced throughout my workflow.
I watched some of your videos. It's very informative and definitely helpful for me as I'm looking for a good hand tool set. I'm from Japan and the trend of hand tools in the US is very different. It'd be more informative if you could make a list to compare the tool sets you reviewed. I'm sure the viewers would appreciate it. Thank you for the videos!
how u doing? i like husky but for the money n quality, i purchase PITTSBURGH they'er great tools. nothing wrong with husky, Milwaukee or craftsmen. but my vote goes to PITTSBURGH. THANKS FOR THE VIDEO. HAVE A NICE N SAFE HOLIDAY, BE BLESS
Ya know, I kinda have to agree. I have a set of SAE and metric Pittsburg and use them for most everything, including in my impact. some of the coloring on them is coming off but who cares. I am rather shocked I have not broke one yet.
Only problem is the pittsurgh set is about $140. And it only has 225 pieces. The Husky Mechanics tool set has 290 pieces which is $170. For $30 more you get more tools with it. So I ask this question, what is the difference of quality? And does Pittsburgh make better sets for more value?
Thanks again for another in-depth looksee. Anyone not needing to impress others in the shop should be happy with that kit. I'm old enough to remember "Husky" as being a sort of American-made "budget brand", like the plain "Sears" gear over their then pricier old "Craftsman" or other premium pro gear--perfectly fine for a "home gamer" like me, but perhaps just a tad rougher around the edges. Seems not a lot has changed there, except they're now made in the Far East. But "Husky" once loomed over that same economy market niche much as Harbor Freight's "Pittsburgh" line does nowadays. Back in the '80s Stanley bought out Husky, but now I believe Home Depot owns the brand and has the gear made "yonder" by Stanley and others. One tip for those who may have this "Husky" box kit or the similar style "Hart" one, also with tools in that top lid, is to screw in a little chain or other line to hold it open at a convenient angle. Otherwise it'll just flop down, making it harder to grab the tools and which'll likely strain the hinges over time. I just screwed in a little length of pull chain to my Hart's lid, like one finds in lamp pull-switches, and it looks nice enough, but most anything will do.
Great video indeed! Would love to be able to win that craftsmen set since I'm just starting and have no tools at all!! Either way, thanks and keep up the great content!
I have a Husky set from about 20 years ago and they are finished very well. I wonder who made them then vs who's making these poorer finished sets today.

I like how you show the skip sizes. One of the biggest reasons beside the warranty I choose Tekton. Thanks
Great review! Thanks for pointing out the lower quality of the Husky. I still like the feel of Husky ratchets over the old Craftsman handles.
I have a couple of husky rachets and for some reason, most of the times in high torque applications the lock up.
Thanks for the tool set reviews, they really help out.

Nice, I'm digging the Craftsman set just a little bit more and it's cheaper.
Great video indeed! Would love to be able to win that craftsmen set since I'm just starting and have no tools at all!! Either way, thanks and keep up the great content!
Husky wrench sets would be a good review.
Surprised it did so well on the shake test
like your reviews great that your doing them really helps out great job keep them coming
I like the Husky set better but the Craftsman is not bad at all
Those trays fall out every time I would suggest picking it up with those trays facing your body or up against your leg
Still waiting to get the craftsman mechanic set till after Christmas
For some reason every time you say “xxx piece set” it reminds me of uncle rico selling the Tupperware 32 piece set
I really enjoy the reviews and content. Very informative.
I have a Husky set from about 20 years ago and they are finished very well. I wonder who made them then vs who's making these poorer finished sets today.
Another wonderful review. 👏 Bravo!
Excellent review of the toolsets. Thanks
Thanks for the comparison.
That craftsman’s set looks killa nice
Husky ratchets look nicer, but I like the Craftsmen sockets better.
