I think that the story of this video is about insecurity, and the difficulty of being with someone. This guy has so much to offer this girl but he can't get over his awkwardness, and seeing how easily she connects with other people makes him even more unsure. He retreats to something he knows, music, and finally he's able to tell her the things he wasn't able to before as he's made this beautiful breakthrough. It's such a beautiful story about being young and not knowing how to reach someone, but realizing the magic of music and how to connect.
+Jesse Wilson That's a good way to interpret it....I like that. It also goes along with the lyrics of the song itself where he talks about being sure that he does want and like her, but he's not quite sure where to go from there. Still, there is something about her that is reassuring to him that if he keeps on trying, and she is open enough, it's going to work out just fine. Then, after trying, seemingly to no avail, he sort of gives up and that's when it really does work out. In the video he asks about where they are, and she just says "you're gonna love it"... and I think that is it. As you said, music is something he knows and right off the bat, she seemed to just know that, which probably planted the seed of hope.

one of the few songs that without fail makes me feel the way I did the first time I heard it
5 years ago I was in love with this band, this song and especially this video. At the end of this video you see a beautiful bridge next to a ferris wheel over a huge river with a cityscape in the background. I loved that bridge so much, that I said to myself, I will be at that bridge one day! So I searched and searched and searched for an entire week. I never did find it. So I gave up... I was so disappointed. Last month i took professional pictures called light painting photography on that very bridge. It's in Minneapolis Minnesota. I didn't realize at the time that this was the same bridge until last night I was watching this video and low and behold.. My dream finally came true!! My 5 year ago self told me I was going to be on that bridge and I was!! All thanks to the paper kites and the people who made this video. Thank you so much for making a dream I once had come true, some might think this is small and trivial but to me... It meant everything! I jumped up screaming "that's the bridge that's the bridge!" 4:12 and shows again at 4:35 .. Too bad I can't show y'all the images they are phenomenal!

I had a similar experience with the bridge from Central Park in NYC where Highlander was filmed. Saw the movie in 1986, got to be on the bridge around 2007 I think. 21 years later 😀

The actor and actress work so well together and with the song and the mv, which is funny because the actor, Harry Reynolds, happens to be the producer of this mv and he wasn’t officially “casted”, they just kind of casually asked him to play the part.

It’s a brilliant song. When it is finished playing I often replay it.
The trick to making a song is having the person listening wanting to play it again. If it's 8 minutes long you'll have had enough when it's finished and look for something else.
Also if you were watching the video it probably confused your brain a bit because the video looks like there should be more.

I went back to this MV just to mention how far Emily Rudd (the leading actress in this video) has reached in entertainment. She has been recently casted as one of the characters in the live action adaptation of the anime "One Piece". Congrats to her! And this song, I still fall in love with it every time I listen to it. I've been in love with this song for almost 6yrs now. Feels like home. This lives in my head rent free.

I tripped over Paper Kites on iTunes just a few weeks before they were scheduled to play here in Minneapolis a couple years ago. The show was sold out, but I made a last minute attempt to get tickets on Craigslist and then tripped over an ad for "The Jam Bar" neon sign that they used for this video (done in Minneapolis). I had to get it.. such a cool video! It hangs over my "breakfast bar" in my one bedroom apartment now. :)
I knew the small venue well for that show and wandered out back to "trip" into the band after the show. I was so new to them that I asked an embarrassing question as to why the guy and girl in the video weren't on stage to find that they were just actors and the band wasn't in town for recording it at all. All I knew was I loved their sound without knowing their faces. Guilty!
