Turns out the Vikings weren't just hellbent on raiding and pillaging, they were pretty efficient traders!

@@HikmaHistory So true! I also like the trope of a group of "savage warriors" taking a place over and being tamed by the pre-existing civilization, so to speak. That happened in SE Asia with a group of Bugis pirates who later became Sultans in southern portions of Malaysia.

I think differences in clothing, hairstyles and customs would've been more striking than the difference in skin tone. Middle Easterners aren't all that different from Europeans, we just think of them as distinct groups for cultural and historical reasons. The Norse did encounter black people though, and called them "blue men" because they looked so strange to them, not so much with Arabs.

What they did with the coins and other precious metals, was use it as "hack silver". Meaning, you carried it around in a pouch or perhaps wear it as jewelry. Then when you need to make a purchase you would literally hack off a piece. Ergo....Hack Silver. Not rocket science by any means, but it worked. Lol. Sometimes they would spare really nice jewelry and give it as gifts. But most of the time it was used to make purchases and/or actual Scandinavian jewelry. Jarls and Chieftains and so on would often hoard large caches of looted gold and silver. They found that chest in Gotaland full off arab coins.

    • @HikmaHistory

A specialized battleaxe wasn't that much cheaper than a sword. And if you're a warrior you don't necessarily have to BUY your weapons. Charlemagne put a moratorium on exporting swordblades from what is now the Ruhr region (Cologne, Solingen), but viking swords frequently have markings on them indicating a Frankish origin of the blade (e.g. Ulfberth). Either somebody didn't heed the Emperor's decree or the blades were won in battle.

That probably unlikely happened. I meant in the case of meeting directly between the Rus Vikings and the Muslims in the Steppe, it was always between Merchants. So as we know that merchats were mostly Men. But in case of women though, they were mostly as one of the selling products, unfortunately.
So rather than some men flirt on some women, i'd imagined that the view were most likely looks like this : Homies from differents cultures were shouting towards eachother by using their own cussing language, because they just couldn't get into the price agreement.
