Gounod: Philémon et Baucis, Baucis's Air "Ô riante nature !" by Jodie Devos

The soprano Jodie Devos performs the air of Baucis "Ô riante nature !", from Philémon et Baucis by Charles Gounod, with the Orchestre National de France conducted by Jesko Sirvend. Excerpt from the Gounod Gala recorded on 16 June 2018.
Written for the salon-opéra of Baden-Baden, this open adaptation of Aesop's fable was premiered in Paris in February 1860 at the Théâtre-Lyrique, having obtained the rights to the work in the hope of furthering the success of Faust. This idea forced the authors of the work to expand the work slightly. Among the additions, the virtuosic air sung by Baucis, only 16 years of age, whose virtuosic airs rival the flute in the first part, highlighting the qualities of a flexible and brilliant soprano without falling into familiar stereotypes. The second part ("D’un époux, qu’il est doux de rire !") is an embellished waltz, bringing the voice all the way up to a high D; Gounod decided to give the work a rythm evoking the coquetry of the young woman, delighted to have punished her husband who mistook her for a young girl.
