I like how this wasn't just a good Sons of Horus painting tutorial but a good painting tips video in general. Also a Luna Wolves video sounds great, black and white is a great colour scheme.
There’s so much packed into this tutorial, need to watch it a couple more time, but thank you Andy! One of the key things that I will definitely take away is that not everything needs to be fully highlighted and shiny. Keeps a proper focus on the bits you do then highlight. Can’t wait for the new box set. Will apply a lot of this to the White Scars!
Been watching different videos of yours on and off for a week. I painted WH40k back between 95-99 with 2nd edition and a small bit of 3rd. Haven't played much since or painted anything. I purchased some mkIII and mkIV space marines last year to get back into the hobby. Now going to get the Horus Heresy box set this June. The plan has always been to do Luna Wolves pre-heresy of course. I also used to have a Vega Airbrush back in high school 91-92. You're making me realize so many things about miniature painting I just didn't think of back in the late 90s. Using an airbrush to create gradients much smoother than successive coats of glaze is such a great idea I am sad I didn't think of it back then. Thanks for the wonderful expertise in this craft. Can't wait to apply it to my Luna Wolves in Mk3,4, and 6 armor this summer. :)
Loved this a lot to take in. Plan on a sons of Horus legion so very useful. I’ve recently purchased the pro acryl paints( apart from the intense range I’ve got all the others) so useful to me. The coins represent the secret lodge in the legion that Erebus put into each of the traitor legions to create secret meetings to start the mistrust of the imperium in time. The coin showed you were a member.
The coins are a Cthonian gang tradition. They are usually placed on the chest of slain opponents by their killer as a sign of respect and a warning to others.
I have been admiring this dread on Instagram for months wishing I could paint like this and I had no idea there would be a tutorial let alone a free one. This is the best news I’ve had all week thanks guys !!!
This might've turned me over to the Sons of Horus side after weeks of trying to decide which Legion to go with. This video (and the ones coming up) will certainly be the basis for my colour scheme as well, great stuff!
I don't know how you achieved to convince me to literally drop my AoS blade of Khorne project to start a Sons of horus army for 30K!!! this model is awesome !! please do more !!!
This video is awesome. I used your colour choices on my sons, along with the oil weathering etc and omg it leveled up my tank painting so hard. Thanks for the like on my Spartan on Instagram!
Oh boy did you knock this out of the park! Absolutely superb end result. One minor niggle is the highlighting on the pelt seems a little too uniform given where it is and how it would be shadowed by the torso armour, but everything else is so dead on 👏👏👏👏👏
I've been meaning to get to my contemptors for my Iron hands for years now. I wasn't happy with the style and I wanted to redo them. This subtle layered weathering effect looks amazing, will definitely try to recreate it for my Iron hands. Fantastic tutorial!
there's a nice and very understated orange rust that contrasts the sea-green so beautifully. and unnoticed it does add a lot more to strengthen the rest of so mellow a color. along with the intended darkening that comes with shading and contrast on their armor. even a small flash of yellow on certain plates. its going to be difficult but im lucky enough to have Book 1 by my side to help me get it right.
The sound you just heard was my jaw dropping. Amazing stuff! Lore stuff on the coins: Those are a sign of identification among certain Legionaries with a certain ... predisposition. To say more would go into spoiler territory, however.
man i like that the transfer messed up as i have a 15 year old iron hands decal sheet and no matter what i try always does that too me gives me a little more confidence to try again now knowing sometimes it just happens
Great video. I have a little insight on the gun barrels like the minigun photo you used as reference. I would think that the "shinier" parts of that weapon are cerakote, which is a baked on ceramic coating used on many modern high wear metal items. The barrels themselves however are probably blued. Bluing is a chemical process which darkens the steel and is used in a large percentage of firearms. It provides rust protection. On this weapon however, the heat generated by rapid fire damages the bluing on a microscopic level, giving it that really cool grey mottled look. It also gives it a slight texture if you were to touch it, almost like a rough paper feel? The cerakote would stay very slick feeling. I might have tried some slightly different color highlights, one for barrels, one for "other" parts, and give the barrels an ultra matte varnish, and the rest of it something more satin. Anyway, I loved the video, and keep up the great work.
Great work! Had the exact same thing happen to me with an old GW decal sheet (wright in the middle of a warhound titan). As soon as I hit it with varnish it frosted up, where others from different sheets were fine.
I've been working on a wraith Knight recently. Because of some impulsive gluing my sub assemblies were less than ideal, but I found that blutac and plastic wrap are a really good way to mask things off quickly. The bluetack can be pressed up to the edges and it holds the plastic sheet down. and the wrap is very flexible so it can contour to shapes and wrap around to adhere to itself.
It’s just gorgeous. I start my HH dark angels tomorrow and will definitely be taking some bits from this for them. I love the warmer greys and think I’ll be looking at testing that Wasn’t just ‘How to paint Sons of Horus’ there was so many techniques on show
Well SoH were my plan for the forthcoming heresy releases... this has cemented it. Brilliant tutorial, thanks very much! Any chance of getting Henry to do an 'army painting' video to help smash out the 80 or so infantry we're all going to need?
I’ve been hanging out for your SOH scheme! Such inspiring stuff! You give viewers confidence and both you and Henry’s teaching manner and tuition is on point (I’m a high school teacher)! Appreciate your free content! Let the Galaxy burn x
Looks great Andy!! Seeing your SoH paint scheme makes me want to paint one myself, they are definitely one of the best out of the HH....the weathering definitely brings it too life.....would be cool to see this paint scheme added to a Leviathan or a Sicarian?
The contrast medium is pretty matt, while the contrast paints are slightly satin. If you want to preserve the shine of the metallics, than thinning with a gloss medium/water instead of contrast medium, might be better. If you are going for a dulled down look, than no worries. Those exhausts do stand out a little too much imo (based on the photo's at the and), so maybe the dulling down was beneficial.
Looks great will we see more Choas Space Marine schemes/tutorials as we near the launch of the Heresy boxset and new CSM codex would like to see a unique take on Thousand Suns without doing GW specific paints
When you get that frosting on the egdes of the transfer i give it a few more layers of varnish and then i sand it smooth with a 1200-1500grit sandpaper to make it smooth and then give it another varnish. You might want to try it, Just a tip
have you maybe considered the weathering waterclor pencils from ak for the weathering? they are a bit more forgiving than regular acrylics since they can be wiped away completely with water. Could help to save some time since you said you spend hours on the chipping stage regarding you looking up pictures of miniguns. you can be most certainn, that the barrels arent painted any colour. with about 6000 rounds per minute, nobody would ever bother painting them as the residual heat of the barrels would burn away any colour in a short amount of time. they are maybe coated in some material to keep them from corroding or oxidisation.
Great video, the colours you used are magnificient, and a 50 min video with commentary is a treat. Quick question, why tamiya white ink over liquitex or daler rowney (whatever its name) ?
Utterly insane, also I tried to do an ultramarine tutorial with VJ paints (Ultramar and Magic Blue with AirBrush and same ink) and it is impossible. Sadly, P3 probably are a must.
great video. Came for an idea for the SoH green, stayed for all the great tips. Gotta try to use more oil paints. Can i ask how long you spend on the paint job?
This is amazing welcome to the dark side andy 🤣🤣, all the layering of streaks and chips etc look amazing. To save me buying yet more paints what would be an equivalent gw paint that you'd use to shade the black, thinking if I mix it with a little matt medium or varnish it matt afterwards I can try and match that style for my iron hands😄
Amazing job! Did the banner video ever come out? I know it's difficult to get everything you want done. Impossible, actually, there's just never enough time!
revisiting such a fantastic video before i attempt the SoH green for, you may not remember now but what colour / paint was used for the initial recess wash stage, i don't think its mentioned in the video? After the green and before the decals the recesses have had some work. I wondered if it was painted in with the SoH green and black mix as i dont think oils were used at this stage? thanks guys as always
I really love how this came out and I am really excited for the new HH boxset as everything that is coming for HH is all I ever wanted for space marines in general. I plan on doing mine as SoH as well but I do not have an airbrush and also no possibility to get one. I am currently asking myself if it would be sensible to try stippling to create similar highlight patterns with a nice textured effect like it is shown in the video, or if I should resort to the classic GW edge highlighting method. I am just afraid that the models will look really flat ad boring if I dont shade or highlight the armor volumetrically. Anyways, this video was a big inspiration and now I am even more excited.
Richard Gray has done a few videos over the last couple weeks about using stippling to start Horus Heresy Marines, that may help you out there; in fact, the algorithm (all praise its benevolent wisdom) sent me here from one of them! It's very interesting to compare and contrast the two approaches, I look forward to exploring them both in the coming months.
Oh wow this video was great! I Especially loved how I once and for all got to see a professional struggle with transfers, and how you fixed them. On a different note, is it unwise to expect a Death Guard paint scheme tutorial anytime in the future?
Did you use a decal solution with your transfers? I do use tamiya mark fit strong and cotton buds on all my decals, and it seems to dissolve/takeaway the transparent film of the decals nearly completely, so that no silvering or shine remains. On my models only the printed parts of the decals seem to remain. Maybe its worth giving that a try on your old decals?
Great tutorial and one that I am currently following for my SoH, thank you! As an aside though, I might be going mad but did you seal the model with gloss before applying the oil weathering? I may have missed it entirely...
looks great dude, but I have a question, why not try to start the texturing with the airbrush? instead of working in smooth flat coats, try going panel by panel and mottling with the airbrush? it's a little slower but it works wonders on vehicles, I picked it up from a channel called night shift and have used it on several historical tanks, and it looks awesome, even though I'm still not great at it
This looks amazing, Andy. Can't wait to see a tank using these techniques. Do you guys plan on coming back to Australia to teach more classes? I would really like to do another one.
Absolutely stunning. Just when I think I've settled on an army for the imminent HH 2.0 release, you release a masterpiece like this and I change my mind. I may have to accept the fact that it's likely I'll be getting more than just a single set. Anyway, back on topic. I was looking through my collection to match the paints you use and have a question about the Neutral Grey you mention at 35:09. I can't find any reference to that colour in Scale 75's catalogue online and so was wondering if you meant a neutral grey from any manufacturer, or whether it was a different grey used? Sorry for the question but my OCD cage has been rattled......
