OMG, Jeff, your groundhog comments reminded me of a hilarious incident in my life. When living at a fly-in community, there was a major gopher problem. The little suckers were making holes all over the place near the runways. A neighbor kid was making money trapping them. One day we walked out into the front yard and discovered our :dry stream bed, full of huge river rocks, had one of the biggest rocks rolled over, with a hole and a huge pile of dirt next to it. We're talking a rock that was about 12" x 8"...that had to be one HUGE gopher! My (late) husband was determined to get rid of that gopher and informed me of his plan to get a couple propane tanks, pump the hole full of gas, and light it up. Instantly, my mind's eye view showed me our house being lifted many feet into the air and coming down as kindling. I asked: "What if gopher metro is beneath our house? Will the insurance pay for that?" My husband considered that for a few moments and decided to put poisoned gopher bait in the hole instead. End of gopher but the house survived.
Beautiful chickens.
You have some very attractive chickens and roosters, love all the colors. Bob looks so cute and right at home in the cat fort:) Beautiful pink cosmos 🏵🌸. I think the groundhog is hoping you'll adopt him, lol.. Have a good night Jeff!
Nice to watch your video homestead keep it up Jeff🐔🐓🐥🐈🌹🌻🍁🌱🌷🍂🌸🌿🍀🌼🌺🐦🎥👍👍👍
Jeff I love to see your chickens you and me both are Chicken Lovers.
Thank you for another day’s video! That rooster with the splotch of yellow is quite beautiful, even though I don’t know a thing about chickens, I know a good color palate when I see it.
Goodmorning Jeff... hair cut, Bob, chickens and flowers . You live a blessed life my friend .
I like it when you talk about chickens and cats. I like anything you talk about because I think you're leading an interesting life.
As long as the groundhog isn't causing any problems, I would let him stay. :-) He's cute. My husband has one that hangs out at his work. He calls them whistlepigs and feeds him marshmallows. Lmao
I love how you talk to your animals. They are so loved and well cared for!
Jeff knows just what to say to the ladies..... ' Hi, I like your beard".
lol :) Never married at 48, go figure.
Things are looking great around the ole Bobblehead Homestead. Nice stew too!
Mary Tyler Moore Olympic Jumping! I just love seeing Super Jeff speed ups, those are so great. Not for everything.. but sometimes,... it is just too cool.
All your birds are just beautiful 😍
LOL< Bob has most assuredly taken over the Cat Fort. He has claimed in for his own. Chickens look vibrant today, love watching them scratch away. They are a good-looking flock. Ole Mr Groundhog, cute as can be, seems he has taken refuge on the homestead. It was low to mid 40's here today, light rain yesterday. Love rainy days, awesome for relaxation.
Caddyshack, old school 😂🤣😂
Great video Jeff ..like the haircut 🙂

Congratulations on 5000 subs! Xxxxx
I like your hens!
I love the coloring of those chickens. My favorite color is purple so I really like the one that has some purple in it. Fascinating discussion about breeding and egg color. I never would have known these things if I hadn't discovered your channel, with a little help from OITC. :)
Nice... You clean up purdy. I started cutting my own hair just like that years ago. But I don't have a compost pile to dispose of the hair. Guess I should get one.
The 8 babies are beautiful also.
Good morning Bobblehead. Heavy frost at the Rosebud this morning. Winter coming fast. HTGDE
Arkansas winters are always better than Illinois winters, so I'm good. :)

Mannnn, I could watch your channel all day long! Bob, seems to like his new apartment! The chickens are such fun to watch, and so are you! I have work to do also, see you in the next one!
THE FREEZER?!?!?!?!?!?!? (collapses in a hysterical mound of clucking fluff) But we KNOW these chickens!!!!!!!!! You can't freeze chickens we KNOW!!!!!
Sigh. The harsh realities of chicken life.
😢🐓
I would probably starve to death if I had to kill an animal . A reality I'd rather not know . Bobblehead Homestead seems like a sweet children's story book at this point with Jeff being the Pooh character. I hope you will please protect our hearts.
@@hannakinn I stayed with my older sister a lot during the summers on their farm . At one point they had a red pig that ran around the yard and acted just like a dog . I was older than her children I think 11that year . I remember it being really difficult for her children when they slaughtered that pig. My youngest nephew refuse to eat it. I can't blame him for not wanting to eat a friend .
@@scclif I love you referenced him to Pooh💖
It's hard, but humans are omnivores. That means we must have meat along with our veg. I think that also means that we have to be ask kind as possible to the animals we eat. They should have the best possible lives that we can give them, before we eat them. And unfortunately, our record STINKS.
Wild Berry has a nice loud crow!!!!
I learn so much on you channel i am one of those chicken people who love colored egg baskets i have never had a blue egg layer want one badly, i had a predator kill twenty chickens in one night, not sure what it was some people think a raccoon family it was heartbreaking now im starting all over again
That silver male is very beautiful!
My dad told a story of a family with two turkeys that the kids named Ekie and Zekie. One was roasted for Thanksgiving, and as the golden brown turkey was brought to the table, one child asked " Is that Ekie? Or Zekie?" And nobody could eat it. It was just a story.
@@iowagreatgrammie1079 Did anybody partake of poor ole Milton J ?

No idea how you will keep right hens with right roosters but will be fun to find out!

they really need some wing trimming or more and more of the tribe will go the way of the wild...
Bob loves his cat chateou
Are you going to tag them in some way? I thought that I'd never forget any of the babies but we finally had to start tagging livestock last year (sheep and beefers). It is no sorrow to send roosters to freezer camp; it is a respectful harvest celebrating the conversion of all that good food and care you've given them into excellent nutrition for you :) If you need pointers on cooking backyard chickens (they can be tougher than store purchased) just ask! I'm sure you'll get a lot of advice, including mine :)
I may need to leg band/tag the Welsummer hens in the future, but the others I can tell apart easily enough right now. And if I do any more 1st generation olive egger chicks I should tag them because they will have a different father than my current ones. Yep, I'll need to tag them with leg bands, seems to be the easiest way, at some point.
Low and slow. Cooking these types of chickens slowly at low temperatures is the recommendation I see most often. Using them as an ingredient, such as in chicken pot pies, instead of using them as the main ingredient, like a chicken breast sandwich, is also recommended a lot. The best thing I've got for them is my small crock pot, so that's what I'll use for whatever. Thanks!
Thought you were gonna shave some of your beard. When you gonna do some of that beard? Me too love 60 degree weather...all year long. Lol your hen knew exactly what you said to her when you told her to jump back in.lolol.
ok i talked to my screen a little bit when you started shaving. "nooo, don't shave your beard!" lol
NOT BEFORE WINTER HE NEEDS HIS HOME TOO.. WAIT TILL SPRING PLEASE
Mary Lucente. And not til after the winter forecast.
lol
The ground doesn't freeze around here in winter and we have several weeks until the first below freezing temps at night, so I'm sure the groundhog will be fine this winter if I'm able to chase it off. It'll probably just move across the street to the Ouachita National Forest. Thanks!
mary misdom - It'd be fun if i had one of those trail video cameras and set it up on Groundhog Day to capture that little dude coming out of the hole. :)
@@BobbleheadHomestead Maybe he has one and is watching you lol.
Hope you have a decent freezer Jeff, some good meat birds
I just got a new freezer this summer. it should work. Thank you!
You scared me with that razor near that beard of yours 😹😹😹
rooster soup????
Love the shave and haircut ... maybe the groundhog is a she ? ...
You might have rooster fights. Freezer camp is where my males will end up from now on.
I had too many Drake's the past year with my ducks. It was a real pain in the butt. I worked hard to keep them away from each other for a year. It became too much honestly.
My favorite Drake was the older Drake who was always picking on the youngest male but ended up having a heart attack. So from now on I'm going to be eliminating Drake's or roosters down to only 2 max.
The freezer camp will make yummy dinners. Lol
How will you keep track of who's who as your flock grows. Like which generation is which. Will you tag them someway. As you can tell I know nothing about chickens. Have a good weekend.
Hopefully you'll FIX that fence soon. Seems like they regularly get out. You want them safe.
The fence isn't broken, it's electric. Have you ever had chickens inside electric fencing? They can go right back in the way they got out if something comes at them. Fight or flight, and they'll fly right back over the fence. I'm not concerned at all.
@@BobbleheadHomestead
Okay. I never had chickens. Jyst sermed the fence was to protect them and they were escaping.
The Groundhog is cute. But I hope he leaves the Cats alone ! Do you think he might of bite Grumpy on the leg a while back ?
The Cool Cat Lounge.
I know very little about chickens and breeds. Maybe you could explain why olive eggers are so sought after. I've read that the egg color has no bearing on the nutritional value of eggs, it's a marketing ploy. So why are certain breeds so valued over others? Just personal choice, looks, egg production? And I wonder have you done any research on ridding the land from a ground hog? Are they a pest or dangerous to your flocks? Thanks for sharing your Cat and Chicken TV, cool as always.
Good questions, I could do a video on that topic. I can talk about chickens all day. :)
Olive eggers are sought after for the same reasons we don't all drive white cars and live in white houses, people have their color preferences and/or like variety.
You are right, egg color has no bearing on the nutritional value of eggs. What the chickens eat determines the nutritional value of their eggs. Unfortunately, hardly anyone cares about the nutritional value of eggs because almost all of the eggs in the stores come from hens without access to bugs and grass and plants, they are all vaccinated and dosed with anti-biotics and medicines to keep them alive, and they live inside a warehouse and never see the light of day. The eggs from my chickens almost certainly have better nutritional values than almost all of the eggs you'd find in a store. It's not the egg color, it's what I feed them, which is mostly organic.
Some people may have said that brown eggs, or whatever, are better white eggs as a marketing ploy in the past but I don't see anyone doing that now because the truth is out there. The fact that some chickens lay different colored eggs isn't a marketing ploy, it's just a really cool thing about nature. I guess if I were selling eggs and could offer a rainbow of colors in each dozen, that would be a marketing ploy to sell my eggs which are prettier that plain white eggs, but it wouldn't be claiming the egg color affects the nutritional value of the eggs.
Groundhogs will devastate a garden in a few days, but they're mostly harmless to other critters. It seems like other people have had success driving them away using scents the groundhogs don't like, so I'll try that first. If I can borrow a live trap I could just take it down the road a couple miles to the forest and let it go there. In a survival situation where I'm really hungry, I could probably kill it and eat it, but I've still got plenty of leftover wild hog stew in the fridge right now.
Thanks!
Thanks for the reply. Have a good week end!@@BobbleheadHomestead
I like the ground hog and have never known of one coming around people. So maybe he likes you .
Humm, maybe keep the hatched one with the purple for four of the new Welsummer hens. Then Junior with the newest chick females. You can then choose what boys will become the Freezer crew. That leaves Wild Berry and the new poppa to divide the rest. Berry with original plus a couple of Welsummer to add to his original harem. Then the others for Poppa. If you get too many Freezer crew members you can butcher and share with your relative who build the cedar house and put in the bathroom floor and your porch.
Oh yes, I'm traditional, how about The Cats Meow for the house name?.
Yep, those are all the scenarios I'm thinking about. And what if I got more hens and another rooster? I need more chicken coops! :) Thanks!
She just wants to visit the neighbor's on the other side of the fence.
Are the nick feathers coming to a point on the young roosters?
Don't know what nick feathers are, but the tail feathers are pointed.
Catdominium
Jeff when you kill the roosters will everyone one else freak out? They all trust you . What do you think they will do?
I won't do it in front of them, so they will barely notice. They'll all just go on eating food and carrying on like normal. They are chickens. Thank you!
🙏❤️🙏
How many roosters can you have in a flock?
It depends on if the roosters can tolerate living with each other, and how many hens you have, and who knows what else. The two new roosters I have get along with each other because the younger one grew up with the older one, but if I were to put my other rooster, Wild Berry, in there they might fight to the death or until one of them submits to the other. They're crazy.
One of the young cockerels/roosters that is growing up with Wild Berry can probably be kept in that same flock with him long-term, and I can keep all of them in there with him until they are around 7-8 months old and begin to challenge Wild Berry for leader. They are just over 3 months old now.
It's best to have one rooster and at least a half dozen hens, but some people can keep 2 or 3 roosters together long term when they have 20 or more hens. It depends on the situation. Thanks!
Are most chickens we eat in the grocery store Roosters or Hens? I think because the females lay eggs they get to live longer but how long can they live without being killed? Have you ever killed a chicken? I could never do that. I would rather eat bark or grasses.
The hybrid breed of chickens we see for meat in the stores and restaurants are called Cornish Cross, like 99% of them. They don't keep the females to lay eggs, that is a different breed they use for eggs which is a leghorn cross. The meat cuts of chickens in stores and restaurants (breast, thighs, legs etc) are all males. Females are used to make chicken nuggets, pet food, and often they are killed the day they are born if the hatcheries don't have a buyer for the females. Males live only for 5-6 weeks before they are harvested, and females live 7-8 weeks before they are harvested.
The leghorn crosses are used for eggs and the males are almost all killed the day they are born because it costs more to raise them than the meat they can produce.
Yep, I've killed a chicken before and I probably will again soon. It's not for everybody, but I like the idea of raising and preparing my own meat instead of having someone else do the dirty work for me. Thank you!
Kat Hotel💕
How can you freeze a critter that has a name?😀😀I would never be able to freeze MaryTylerMoore or CarolBurnett. But my Grandpa always said that's what farm animals are, food.🐱🐱🐱
I was talking about the extra males/rooster I hatched and raised for the freezer, not my valuable hens that I've named. If I've named them, chances are they are safe from the freezer. :)
From personal experience, I would Go ahead and ‘process’ those roosters to keep the meat tender. Otherwise you will have stew meat.
You scared me for a while :-{ I thought you were going to shave your beard off.
Yeah, Jeff had me wondering just how far those clippers were gonna go, lol.
8 males mean good eating
So, since you have an over abundance of roosters, what are you going to do with them. sell or good eating? I don't think you can neuter chickens so the stock will stay in the genetic area you want it to if you dont deal with the 7? young males you have.
If I can sell them, I will, but they'll probably be the most expensive chicken I've ever eaten. And for the first time in my life, I will have raised my first meat from birth to the plate instead of having someone else do it for me. Thanks!
The FIRST animal to table is the hardest. Grew up on a small farm. I hope folks on FB or whatever network you sell or pass along livestock on might be interested in roosters, after all Barry was a solo rooster. Good Luck
Don't eliminate the ground hog yet! He might be a she and has a nest
Jeff I love you and wish you all the best...but I cannot stick around to see the creatures I have fallen in love with killed and frozen. I am happy you are giving them the best life possible before that and I know some people want and/or need their meat...but I cannot watch and I don't want to see it. It hurts my heart. God bless.
I'm worried for the chickens and ground hog. Maybe you could trade them instead of eating them.
I won't do it on video and it's the extra roosters that were born here and I'm raising that I will turn into food. It won't be light-hearted or easy for me, but I've just been through many years where I could barely afford any meat and rarely spent more than $1/pound for hot dogs or chicken legs. Cheap food (potatoes, rice, beans, pasta) isn't very healthy but I'll know exactly what those extra roosters were fed because I've been responsible for them since the day they were born.
For almost the past decade my food budget has been less than $50 per month. Sometimes people have to listen more to their stomach because they don't live in enough luxury to listen to their hearts. Be thankful you have that luxury.
I won't eat the groundhog unless I'm starving, and I'll try to sell the extra roosters but I highly doubt I can.
Bobblehead Homestead Jeff as someone who’s always been on a tight budget I absolutely understand where you’re coming from. I also had two daughters plus adopted two later. Anyway, you’re doing the PERFECT thing for your health. You are growing food that CAN actually help heal. If I could grow chickens I certainly would, instead I grow veg cause I’m in the burbs. I’m hoping to find a small place to rent in the country so I can have chickens. I won’t buy because my own health isn’t well enough to tackle such an endeavor. In fact I sold my house when I first got REALLY sick. It’s been better since I’ve taken responsibility for my body. Do what you can!! Keep doing it. I mean I know you will, that’s what you’re out there for. Just saying those of us who get it will always support you!! God Bless ~Lisa
Flippin For Fun, are you a vegan? For non-vegans, raising one's own meat is the best thing for the animal. They are raised in an environment where they are treated right, far superior to factory farms, which are unfortunately where most people get their meat from. Just something to consider.
Are you going to eat those male babies when they get bigger? You don’t want to keep too many roosters because they will fight over the hens. I never kept roosters because I didn’t want to breed them. I just wanted eggs. Roosters can get vicious when you go near the hens. I have been attacked by a nasty rooster while collecting eggs so I gave him away.
