  • "Tenyimi is a natural family institution and it is not a union. We are Tenyimi by blood and not by choice" -Dr Shurhozelie Liezietsu
Tenyimi Day is celebrated on 22nd February every year.
Tenyimi: The Naga tribes who trace their dispersal from Makhel, under Tahamzam district in Manipur, are known as "Tenyimi" or "Tenyimia".
    These are-
    1. Angami
    2. Chakhesang
    3. Inpui
    4. Mao
    5. Maram
    6. Pochury
    7. Poumai
    8. Rengma
    9. Thangal
    10. Zeliangrong (Zeme + Liangmai + Rongmei)
Historically, the Tenyimia is a group of Naga tribes which trace common ancestry. According to the oral sources, these people basically dispersed from two villages known as Maikhel (Mekhrore) and Khezhakenoma to different parts of the present-day Nagaland, Manipur and Assam. Their claim of common descent is endorsed by shared memories and conjoined geographical spaces besides the close linguistic lineage that is found among the varied dialects.
Tenyimia community inhabits the districts of Kohima, Phek, Dimapur, and Peren in Nagaland, Tamenglong and Tahamzam districts in Manipur, part of North Cachar and Karbi Anlong in Assam. They are united under the Tenyimi Peoples' Organisation (TPO), the apex body of the Tenyimi. It is formed to work for the welfare of the Tenyimi family, to strengthen family ties among the different units, and to protect the common interest of Tenyimi people. TPO units are spread across three states - Nagaland, Manipur, and Assam.
The Tenyimi share a deeply rooted cultural heritage and inherent values. For instance, the traditional wrestling culture of Tenyimi is still practiced among these tribes. Have a look at this naked wrestling festival: • MARAM KHULLEN ll NAKED...
"TPO is not a fabricated organization with opportunistic motivation for political gain. It is the apex body of the Tenyimi family striving to get to know one another better, to co-operate to deepen their unity, drawing strength and wisdom from their shared roots, originality, identity, and common lineage. Our objective is to authenticate the inter-relationships that exist for historical reconstruction and a closer intimacy between various Naga tribal communities."
    - Keku Zeliang (TPO president) and Z.Vasa (TPO vice-president)

i am from poumai naga tribe proud tenyimi and when it comes to then tenyimi family i believe tat the NORTHERN AND WESTERN TANGKHULS which border the poumai thangal n chakhesang tribes are truely tenyimi by blood. we call them PIHUMAI . they trace their origin from MAKHEL or other MAO POUMAI villages . when one even ask poumai mao elders they will also tell tales of their connection with the northern and western tangkhuls . their lifestyle and traditional dresses , language , ornaments and dances all resemble the tenyimi tribes . they are very distinct and quite different from southern and eastern tangkhuls .... hope this will bring awareness and lets not leave anyone behind when it comes to the TENYIMI FAMILY .

Frankly speaking, Tangkhuls is a group of sub tribes and clans as per my knowledge, like theTenyemi family. Each Tangkhul village speaks different dialects and autonomous. Ukhrul language is the lingua franca for all Tangkhuls. There might be some Tangkhul sub-tribe that belongs to the" Tenyemi" family, no doubt about that.

Please, don't use the nomenclature, Zeliang ,when you represent your single identity. You can write , Zeme, if you are Zeme. Liangmai, if you are Liangmai. Zeliang is recognized only in Nagaland. Tenyemi are consist of various Naga tribes that are in Manipur, Assam, Arunachal, etc. In a broader sense, you can use Zeliangrong instead. The term Zeliangrong is not merely a term but a kindred tribes( one single entity ).

True.. Indeed. When people leave the parent/home village for some other place, they get assimilated into the bigger community.

Tenyimia/Tengima/Tenyimi' which originates from 'Tenyiu' the name of the forefather of the Tenyimia group was accepted by all units(all the 10 Tenyimi tribes) by their historical knowledge. 'Tenyimia' therefore, means the descendant of Tenyiu. (Source: Google)

You're right! We have every right to be curious about it because we are told another story. Electoral politics and boundary differences cannot change history and facts.

Tenyimia/Tengima/Tenyimi' which originates from 'Tenyiu' the name of the forefather of the Tenyimia group was accepted by all units by their historical knowledge. 'Tenyimia' therefore, means the descendant of Tenyiu. (Source: Google)

Although there are stories/folklore regarding their affinity with the Tenyimi, the Sumi tribe hasn't been included in the TPO yet.

Anyhow, tenyimia is a family name of tribes that come from one same blood. So no matter what a tenyimia is a tenyimia as long as the same blood flows in us... Sumi is also tenyimia by blood... They are the generation of younger brother of khuzhami (khezhami) ancientor... Khuzhami parent is elder and Sama parent is younger... Their first ever village after forming Sama community is near our khuzhami villages and still there... After Mekhel khuzhami and some other tenyimia tribes form a second Village near Mekhel called Khuzha but everyone separated and from new communities/tribes. Khuzhami also left the second village and form khuzhami community. Since Khuzhami left last they used the name Khuzha "Mi" mean people... Since in oldent days it is kenyü to used same language of existing languag of previous community after migrating to new places and from new village we change our language and used new village/community name. But in terms of khuzhami, since they are the last people to left they need not change the community name cause there is no more community left to hold the name after them. So it is not Kenyü...
