They shut off after 3 minutes because the newer electronic sirens have sensitive speaker drivers that could blow out after being on for so long, so they need a break, then they activate again per the OEM and NWS in Norman.
+Jon Jukes She spent half of the video filming the secondary mesocyclone without knowing that the tornado was to the left of her focus in half of the video. But the huge tornado came within 1/2 mile of her...most of the traffic was trying to get away from it. Why didn't she go after it?? Because not everyone in Oklahoma is a storm chaser...contrary to belief apparently. I would have been scared as I'm sure she was...no need to get into a vehicle with it that close. You are better off to stay where you are.
+Jon Jukes A historical event in hindsight. Unless you know for sure you can get away from it in time, it is better to stay off of the roads...most people aren't trained storm spotters or know exactly what they are looking at in the sky and what it is doing. She did the right thing in not "going after it" for many reasons.
+Jon Jukes agree with mda037, if you can't even aim your camera at the tornado while in your own yard, you certainly should not be out in a vehicle chasing after it. For the majority of this video, she wasn't even looking at the actual tornado! If you go chasing these things, without knowing what you are looking at, you put not only yourself in danger, but a whole lot of other people as well.

اللهم عليك بهم فانهم لا يعجزونك
I was in my 4th grade class at Briarwood elementary when we got hit by this giant, I thought I was in a dream, train car was just chillin on the roof.
I live in texas and to see an EF5 coming at me i would freak out and go crazy
The scariest thing of all it it doesn't even look like a tornado!
Wow! Did it come your way or miss you?
One mile north of me. Destroyed my Uncle's house.
What does it mean when the sirens are sounded twice
the threat is still present. These ones only sound for 3 minutes and turn off (but that does not mean all clear)
Spookiest twister in history for several reasons.
Whoever took this video has way more courage then I do.
Not really! The video camera was on a tripod. I was in the cellar!
What are those Red lights flashing ?
It's the lights on the speed limit sign for a school.
When I heard the tornado siren I was like oh $#&% because I was like ten miles away from the tornado
That's the modulator 5020 duel tone
Such a fierce storm and so little lightning...

I am curious. What buildings are behind your yard??
Some houses and an elementary school.
@Cesar Jr Broadmoore Elem.
@Cesar Cenobio Jr I was curious too, Plaza Towers? Briarwood? 😬😢
If I saw something like that here in Louisiana, I'd wear out my shoes before I stopped running. We can't have storm shelters here. The soil's not right for them.
Yep. I'm from Louisiana. Areas of Mississippi are the same
Why isn't the siren continuous?
The sirens ring for 3 minutes, then shut off. I THINK they are manually turned on again after that.
They shut off after 3 minutes because the newer electronic sirens have sensitive speaker drivers that could blow out after being on for so long, so they need a break, then they activate again per the OEM and NWS in Norman.
Good job filming
Thank you.
Julia, how come you didn't go after it?
+Jon Jukes She spent half of the video filming the secondary mesocyclone without knowing that the tornado was to the left of her focus in half of the video.
But the huge tornado came within 1/2 mile of her...most of the traffic was trying to get away from it. Why didn't she go after it?? Because not everyone in Oklahoma is a storm chaser...contrary to belief apparently. I would have been scared as I'm sure she was...no need to get into a vehicle with it that close. You are better off to stay where you are.
Mda037, I love tornadoes, I know very few people in the state chase, or would chase. I said that since this turned out to be an historical event.
We'll agree to disagree.
You called it F5, but the designation for this tornado is EF5
She was looking at the wrong clouds she couldn't see the power flashes..lol
It's nowhere near the GD fence of this house....lol....some people can get so dramatic about stupid crap.
Look at that tornado holy Sh#t
Sounded like the siren was taken out or they got tired of hearing it and turned it out despite the enpending DOOM approaching. brave soul for filming even as DOOM is approaching. I might have recorded for a little but I think I would have gone in and hunkered down heart racing and scared to death. I also love the cars driving by as if nothing is happening. was in Edmonton, Ok visiting 25, May 2019 when El Reno was hit by an EF-3 Tornado. luckily it lost strength as it moved Northeast from were is was. Got lots of heavy rain and wind but no hail.
The sirens go for 3 minutes then shut off. They turned them back on. I was due south of the tornado so I knew I was OK, I just had to watch for Flying objects!
I believe many of the cars were people escaping the tornado area. There was some gridlock from the number of cars making their escape.
The sirens have a timer that automatically shuts them down after 3 minutes if they don’t receive cancel tones
