Rest in peace Gil-Galad and Elendil, kings of old but their names will live on throughout Middle Earth's history as legends... Very good video!
Yeah great video, but it seems like you fall into the trap of the movie series. As in didn’t Elendil and Gil galad actually deal the death blow to Sauron? The movie made it look like Isildur is the one that did it but I’ve heard that it’s not really how it went down according to the author’s rendition.
War of the Last Alliance would make an awesome series to see. The tactics and formations used. Good old fashioned hack and slash.
There are no real descriptions of tactics in the canon, it was a massive slugfest when it got to the Morannon and the Free Peoples just drove into Mordor with brute force.
War of the Last Alliance has a section summary in Of The Rings of Power and the Third Age essay in The Silmarillion, but it's also one of the least described events in SA, though most of that time period is as Tolkien often himself pointed out, treated 'annalistically' (the full narratives with dialogues and character arch etc. would be from very early SA like Mariner's Wife long before that time) the information about Last Alliance is scattered across many different texts, starting from Lotr itself to Unfinished Tales. It's also chronologically last tale of Second Age so it would be more like a suitable ending of the series rather than a whole series on it's own. Gollum, Elrond, Aragorn, all of them make some remarks on those events in Lotr (Gollum tells of what he heard about those events in relation to Dead Marshes:
"There are dead things, dead faces in the water,' he said with horror. 'Dead faces! '
Gollum laughed. 'The Dead Marshes, yes, yes: that is their names,' he cackled. `You should not look in when the candles are lit.'
`Who are they? What are they? ' asked Sam shuddering, turning to Frodo, who was now behind him.
'I don't know,' said Frodo in a dreamlike voice. 'But I have seen them too. In the pools when the candles were lit. They lie in all the pools, pale faces, deep deep under the dark water. I saw them: grim faces and evil, and noble faces and sad. Many faces proud and fair, and weeds in their silver hair. But all foul, all rotting, all dead. A fell light is in them.' Frodo hid his eyes in his hands. 'I know not who they are; but I thought I saw there Men and Elves, and Orcs beside them.'
`Yes, yes,' said Gollum. `All dead, all rotten. Elves and Men and Orcs. The Dead Marshes. There was a great battle long ago, yes, so they told him when Sméagol was young, when I was young before the Precious came. It was a great battle. Tall Men with long swords, and terrible Elves, and Orcses shrieking. They fought on the plain for days and months at the Black Gates. But the Marshes have grown since then, swallowed up the graves; always creeping, creeping.'")
After battle of Dagorlad: "Then Gil-galad and Elendil passed into Mordor and encompassed the stronghold of Sauron; and they laid siege to it for seven years, and suffered grievous loss by fire and by the darts and bolts of the Enemy, and Sauron sent many sorties against them.
"
The Silmarillion, Of the Rings of Power and the Third Age
I can't wait to see Sauron in that cool armor just bash through everyone.
Man, I hope that LOTR Amazon does this right .
Me too, but I'm not going to hold my breath.
LOL. I'm sure it will live up to the high standards of the Hobbit.
@Aung Un'Rama That's the joke
My biggest hope is that they expand on the "Duel" between Sauron and Gil-Galad and Elendil. and I do hope that Gil-Galad gets focused as one of the main Characters. So much potential in this show, but im Mostly worried about how they'll portray the war in general.
From what I've heard Tolkien estate had said that Amazon has to stick with what's written and not contradict anything that's in Tolkien's book, so that's given me a bit of hope that this show might do well
This last alliance makes me wonder at how large and powerful Ar-Pharazôn's forces must have been for Sauron to submit.
I imagine Sauron planned to submit all along. Think of it this way. Sauron would never stop attempting to conquer Middle-Earth. By submitting and gaining their trust he could turn their power to his favor or at the very least destroy them. That would be one kingdom of the free peoples less to deal with.
@@penitentpotato1344 fact is numenor have 7 regions , and maxim half of anduine people escape and created arnor and gondor , mins that numenor army of great armada o than imprizonated sauron was bigger minimum 6,5 than elendils army and this is a fact.
@@adrianciobanu5856 Sorry mate but I really don't understand what you're saying
It has nothing to do with Ar Pharazons forces. Ar-Pharazon ambitions alone to be immortal could submit Sauron to him in order to deceive him. Aside from the fact that Ar-Pharazon was dictator in the island.
@@penitentpotato1344 Rereading; I don't think so. Sauron's forces first leave him, Sauron then decides to feign fealty, which seems reasonable to other men but Ar-Pharazôn decides not to believe, and so then he decides to takes Sauron as hostage.
I love that you don't rely on movie footage, instead using this beautiful artwork.
Underrated comment
Personal theory; The Black Gate was built in response to the War of the Last Alliance and the host of the west being able to simply walk into Mordor.
Could be. But i think it was originally build by Gondor (like Cirith Ungol) and after they left the area and Sauron returned, he used it for himself... Most likely he build it even stronger and more menacing.
That theory is way wrong
One does not simply walk into Mordor
One does not simply walk into Mordor - with or without The Black Gate
You are right the towers of the teeth and the gate were built later than this war.
Gilgalad was an Elven king, of whom the Harper's sadly sing. His sword was long, his lance was keen... I forgot the rest.
Great video. Would love to see one on Anorion. One of my fav minor characters. And that period while he’s defending Gondor by himself. That would be a cool video too. 🍻👍👍

Maria Paz Gonzalez Lesme Gil-Galad and Elendil were epic, died to defeat Sauron
This is like watching and hearing a story like a kid being interested. Extraordinary.
I don't know if anyone ever bothered to ask Tolkien about this but I find it curious that every single important character has a named weapon that is also described before a battle. Gil-Galad and Elendil both have named and described weapons they used against Sauron in person, but Sauron is only described as "wrestling" with the both of them, and killing Gil-Galad with the heat of his hand. I think Sauron with his Ring did not need a weapon, and fought them both at once by hand. The way Elrond describes it is very vague, and I wonder if that is on purpose. Like maybe Elendil and Gil-Galad were just completely wrecked in seconds and BARELY were able to hurt Sauron enough to incapacitate him.
I always dreamed as a kid of how grand this battle had been. The Fellowship of the Ring movie only made me want to see more of it.
I found this channel a few days ago after I rewatched the LotR and Hobbit films. I know a lot from the books and stuff I’ve read over the years but the HUGE nerd in me loves this stuff so much. I only wish that there was more info out there about after the war of the ring and stuff. Tolkien was a genius, the like we won’t see again. Anyway man I love the vids, keep it up :)
Edit: i also love to think that after the events of LotR, tree beard and the ents went to the old forest and found the ent-wives.
I would also love a vid about the various kinds of orcs, like the different kinds such as uruks, half orcs and normal orcs, as well and the differences between orcs and goblins. I would also love to know how orcs are made, obviously melkor mimicked elves to create the first orcs but I don’t know how the other kinds of orcs were made or how they reproduce because they don’t seem to be of long lifespans like elves and I don’t know of any female orcs either.
It’s just nice to know there are other Tolkien fanatics out there, guess I’m not so crazy after all
Welcome to the channel and thanks for the support! It means a lot to me! Have a good one! :)

Yoystan! I've been watching all your videos last weekend. You make an AMAZING job! Thank you so much.
I love this series on the wars of the Legendarium. Thanks for the awesome videos.
The fact that Gil-galad and Elendil brought down Sauron was a great feat. Badass fighting a dark lord on the slopes of a volcano. They killed him at the cost of their lives. How I wish to have seen that in the movies.
Yeah don't mess with Sauron king of Mordor prince of darkness
They didn't, Isildur defeated him, and that only by chance. Sauron didn't die, he just lost his corporeal form and power, that repeats itself ad the end of Lord of the Ring. Sauron was one of the biggest Maia, and he couldn't die. Sauron's spirit was diminished in a shade or a ghost, but he did not die.
@@valentintapata2268 I am aware of Sauron's nature, but that doesn't mean you can't kill their corporeal forms. Like the Balrogs, he's stuck in that form, and knows that if he exposes himself then he could be killed. Luckily for him, the One Ring wasn't destroyed. So his spirit did not diminish.
Sauron was never a warrior. He's more of a sorcerer. So no surprise that two great warriors took him down.
@@valentintapata2268 Elrond himself states that they both brought him down. Isildur only cut the ring from his finger. In a letter to a fan; Tolkien also states that they slew him. Or if not that then atleast he was mortally wounded and Isuldur finished the job.
@@valentintapata2268 You're imagining the movie's portrayal, not the books.
"...he [Sauron] wrestled with Gil-galad and Elendil, and they both were slain, and the sword of Elendil broke under him as he fell. But Sauron also was thrown down, and with the hilt-shard of Narsil Isildur cut the Ruling Ring from the hand of Sauron and took it for his own. Then Sauron was for that time vanquished, and he forsook his body, and his spirit fled far away and hid in waste places; and he took no visible shape again for many long years." - The Silmarillion
"Gilgalad and Elendil are slain in the act of slaying Sauron. Isildur, Elendil's son, cuts the ring from Sauron's hand, and his power departs, and his spirit flees into the shadows." -Letter #131
Elendil and Gil-galad slay (meaning to kill) Sauron at the expense of their lives. Sauron lies dieing on the floor when Isildur cuts the Ring from his hand. Sauron's spirit then leaves his body and departs.
Sauron was wedded to his body. The separation of his spirit from his body is the very definition of death; when he is overthrown he dies, Maia or not. He also dies when his body is destroyed at the destruction of Numenor, and he had died before then when he was subdued by Húan and Lúthien.
you know, it's ironic that Tolkien, being a veteran of WW1, wrote of friendship and hope in the face of evil, and George R.R. Martin, a Vietnam draft dodger, writes of the most horrible traits of man with a speckle of good, all in all, I love both of their works though I vastly prefer Tolkien
Couldn't agree more.
Interesting. Living through a war made Tolkien appreciate life.
Love em both for very different reasons

Well worth the wait for this video to come out. In many respects, Gil-Galad reminds me of Fingolfin as they both stood firm against an evil foe and sadly perished fighting for freedom and the Light.
Great description of one of the greatest battles in lord of the rings!
I enjoyed this in depth analysis of the war itself and how it really went down.
I would really love it if you’d do an analysis the war in the north when the Witch King built his terrible kingdom of Angmar and destroyed Arnor. I played the Rise of the Witch King story, but I would love to see a more in depth, canon look on it if you hadn’t done so already. Thanks ^^
I got emotional watching this. Amazing job!
In regards to the Ents, Treebeard does state in the books to Merry and Pippin that he had "not seen the Ents this roused since the Wars of Sauron and the Men across the Sea." Or something like that. So it is possible that the Ents did participate against Sauron--especially if they knew that their wives were long gone.

One of the most glorious wars of Middle Earth. Great video Yoystan. I have a couple questions that I wasn’t able to ask you on your last livestream.
1. Are there any mythologies and mythological stories that you wish Tolkien used as inspiration?
2. Have you read any of the Dune books, and if you did, what similarities and differences do you see between Tolkien’s and Herbert’s works?
This is an excellent channel, awesome narration, amazing artwork. I'd also like to pass on a nod to another channel called "Alien Theory" covers a lot of ground the films failed to do so.

I hope that when the new LOTR prequels airs on Amazon, you'll not only give your analysis on each episode, but that we can gather here and discuss it, as Men of The West fans.
No fans, we are all men of the west
There were said to be dwarves who joined this battle I would like to see them in action :) "Durin IV was the King of Durin's Folk during the War of the Last Alliance, and he sent a great army of Dwarves of Khazad-dûm to fight alongside the Last Alliance of Elves and Men to help in the battles."
With The Legendarium, Tolkien truly created a worthy metapher on the reality!
Sleep shall be postponed.
The little glimpse from the LOTR films was cool, but I really hope the Amazon series does it justice. I am so ready to see what they do with it.
Besides the Greeks and other ancient stories I’ve never seen such a polished and rich lore. I also found out a few days ago that the year Tolkien passed mirrored the number of rings, 1973. Makes one think.
This was really well made! Would it be possible to do a video explaining the high elven sword?
Hey there! Consider doing a video about Aegnor and Andreth. Their story is perhaps one of the most heart-wrenching of Arda and one I would love for you to tell!

I think that Sauron's army during the War of the Last Alliance numbered possibly in the mid hundreds of thousands but most numbers of his host was the orcs or glamhoth, and great video Men of the West. And you mean a few dwarves on the side of Sauron.

If all goes well, we'll probably see it in the later seasons of Rings of Power 😄

I think the Entwives got tired of war and with the two blue wizards went to the far east, beyond the reach of all the different warring factions of Middle Earth, to live in peace.
the east was in constant war even after the 3rd age.

It was in his moment of triumph over Gil-Galad and Elendil as both high-kings fell before him, his pride made him blind as he let his guard down and Isildor with his father's broken blade sliced the One Ring of Power from Sauron;s hand. The ring was pretty much the only thing keeping Sauron's physical form together after the destruction of Numour
Hmm i wonder if Isildur, Anárion and Elendil stories changes where both of his sons fell in combat instead of the father and younger brother fun stuff to think about (imo) :)
Wasn't Sauron mortally wounded by Elendil and Gil-Galad?
Yeah elendil and gil-galad made him fall defeated and isildur just walked up grabbed the hilt and cut off the ring removing his soul from the material plane. But its not very herioc and doesnt make a good story/movie
@@Molcos429 I think that battle between the 3 would have been more epic on screen
Came here to say this....Sauron was already mortally wounded or "dead" when Isildur cut the ring off his hand.
Gil-Galad was mortally wounded by Sauron for he took his body against him and then raised his own body temperature to red hot. Sauron hit Elendil with a blow of his mace. When the sword Narsil broke under Elendil Sauron was probably intrigued by the craftmanship in that sword, so he reached for the hilt. But Isildur (maybe presumed dead) was quicker..
Isildur literally just cut off the ring and took it and he became a legend lol
This is off topic a bit, but at the beginning of the first Lord of The Rings movie, Cirdan is shown wearing the blue ring, and Gil-Galad is shown wearing the red ring. This is a mistake. Elrond ended up with the blue ring when Gil-Galad was killed, and Gandalf was given the red ring by Cirdan when the Istari arrived in Middle Earth.* These are all really well done.
The moral of the War of the Last Alliance is that no one people can stand alone.
No matter how strong you are, your allies and friends will make you stronger.
Every body always talks of old elven lords that are thousands of years old but what about soldiers. All elves are immortal so there could be average soldiers older than the lords. Would be neat to hear the story of an average soldier that survived everything from beleriand through now.
About Glorfindel: We find an interesting dispute here: According to Christian Tolkien: Apparently JRRT showed him forth twice at first. In the First aera as a defender of Tuor and his company escaping the sack of Gondolin and dying while killing a Balrog. Then in the 3rd aera coming to the aid of Strider and Frodo's company when pursued by the Nazgûl. JRRT made up for that when he explained that Glorfindel (1) was resurrected in Valinor and then wished (or was sent) for the Hither Lands to continue the struggle agaist evil.
Now when did Glorfindel travel east back over the Sundering Sea? Christian explains that it had to be in the 2nd aera when the sea routes were still open in both directions. It could not have been in the 3rd aera, for traveling the Straight Road eastward was forbidden then, and that "would make Glorfindel more important than he was."
I have two comments to this: Why, if Glorfindel was the mighty warrior he was descibed later, was he not one of the commanders for the Elves, and did they even risk the life of their Shipwright? And second, Glorfindel WAS important. Imagine, five Maiar land on the shores of Lindon, claiming to come from the Valar. But the Elves had seen such before.. Did not Annatar (Sauron in disguise) claim the same? Hence it is plausible that Glorfindel was sent with the Istarii to vouch for them. Thus, I am not convinced that Glorfindel arrived in the 2nd aera when Númenor was still a power strong enough to beat Sauron. I keep possible that he only arrived a thousand years later when Sauron and his minions again began to stir in Middle Earth.
Who did all the artworks? They’re all amazing.
Logistics must have been a nightmare. You'd have to transport food for thousands of people via the Black Gates through Mordor. Must have been fun.
Can you do a video on the battle of Elendil and Gil-Galad vs Sauron? Speak of Saurons fall at Numenor and rebuilding and how a high elf and man nearly bested them and their weapons, all three pleeeease 😍😁
"I will have this as wereguild though I buy it with great pain"
Some of the armors and weapons from Lord of the Rings left something to be desired, especially the swords of the elves but I have to say Saurons armor and mace were perfect.
👍 great job
Where did you find the artwork at 0:43? I can’t find a high quality version of it and I love it.
Have you done the battle of unnumbered tears? I can't recall😉👍
We need a War of the Last Alliance reenactment
I have to read it up, but I think Sauron fell from Elendil's and Gil-Galad's strikes and that Isildur "merely" cut of his finger while he lied on the floor, beaten. Many epic duels in Arda end with the 'victor' succumbing to the wounds treated by the opponent(s). Isildur probably knew what he was doing and as Gollum mentions that Sauron has 9 fingers (weird that he could not regenerate the missing one, but apparently his whole body elsewise), it is implied that he only lost one finger. Now it is far more likely that Isildur cut the finger off a incapacitated Sauron because taking a single finger and not one more of a moving target, even accidently, seems very unlikely.
Nice video and hello I’m a new subscriber. And I just wanna say great job with explaining this truly epic war in the LOTR series. And if it’s cool could you do a what if theory on isildur destroying the ring during the last alliance?

Thanks for the suggestion but I’ve got you covered! Here’s my video on the Dead Marshes: ua-cam.com/video/HSyQETpv_v4/v-deo.html
Beautifully done video. It did make me think of something though. I've always wondered about the stone of Erech. Is there much information on it? I've always wondered what it was, and where it came from.
It is a mystery, all that is known is that Isildur brought it from Numenor and that it is not a Palantir and also that it is huge enough for several men to put their hands on it
I wonder what it would feel like to face Sauron? And I don't even mean in battle, just literally face him and have him look back at you? One certainly gets the impression from the novels that looking upon a maia is not at all recommended for the weak-willed or otherwise ill-prepared. And then I try to imagine what went through the minds of Gil-Galad and Elendil, both of whom were certainly neither weak-willed nor ill-prepared...
Either way, I suppose even a simple conversation would prove daunting to us lowly, non-Numenorean mortals...
....and on the slopes of Mt Doom they fought for the freedom of Middle earth....
As an amateur historian I love finding the connections and meanings in life both past and present
For me this war was an echo of the battles that took place between Morgoth and the beings of the first age; the siege of Angband and Mordor are almost identical, and unfortunately they both ended up the same way with history repeating itself.
Thank Eru for hobbits:)
I'm pretty sure Gil galad along with elendil actually managed to incapacitated saurons body. That's how isildur approached his body in cut off the ring finger with little to no resistance from Sauron
I'm surprised there are so many topics that were in the silmarillion made in the lord of the rings and hobbit trilogy. Especially in the extended editions . Which could make it so memorable if they use these in the new tv show coming soon . Like when we see the bodies on the Dead Marshes ,we would know why it's called that now and who were there . Saruman mentions the ring of Barahir in the extended in the two towers cause Grima recognized it . Aragorn mentions in the extended scene on the fellowship of the Ring about Beren and Luthien. Denethor mentions that he is walking into the house of Anarion in Minas Tirith . And of course not to mention we see minas Ithil before it turned to Minas Morgul and seeing how and where the white tree truly came from . Sucks we didn't see barely any thing about Cirdan or Gil Galad or even nothing about Anarion in the Prologue about this war . Sauron would most definitely have more fight scenes and I wanna see the part where he burns gil galads face with his hand . That sounds awful . Is that what sauron was trying to do to isildur in the prologue ? If so it would make sense if they showed that Gil Galad part and then him about to do the same motion to isildur . It would then make more sense cause it made me wonder what the hell sauron was trying to do with Isildur lol. Again if this tv show has this much stuff covering it like scenes like this I will probably cry happily lol . Cause I want to see a longer version of this War badly .
What if elrond or anyone just knocked out/killed isuldur and threw the ring in mount doom
I love your videos
