I found “bund” straps years ago on eBay, from a seller who, last time I checked, is out of business. What you have is more what I’ve seen described as a “cuff” or “saddle”. The bund is somewhat noticeably shorter, as the first pictured example you have on this video. If you search watch cuff or saddle, you’ll see examples of what you’re wearing. I know Fossil sells them; I have about four. You can really match some watches you wouldn’t normally consider; I wear my Mudman ( Mudmaster? The 2nd tier) with the extenders and a silicone strap. You’d be surprised how they match. Congrats on your 100k, you deserve it. Always good stuff.

First time I saw a bund strap was on my grandfathers watch, an old soviet Raketa watch. After more than 20 year of wasting away in the attic it still worked when it got to me and it was on this old, thick black leather bund strap which looked alien to me. Since then I started collecting vintage watches and I find they really work well with bund straps (these fragile timepieces also get a bit more protection from your sweat which can corrode the back).

The Bund Strap is the reason i don't have the original bracelet for my Accutron Spaceview I purchased with high school graduation money in 1973. Those straps were all the rage (not that I knew what they were called) and I left for college with my Spaceview attached to a wide green leather strap somewhere and along the way misplaced my Accutron bracelet. Thanks for beating that drum again. And congratulations on the 100K milestone! Keep at it!

Bund straps are just about the only way I can wear Vostok watches -- the Stainless they use in their case backs has a very high nickel contact, and I'm badly allergic to nickel.

Pretty cool. I've had one that I put on my Seiko SNK809. It was such a good look. And I remember one day a women in her 60's stopped me and exclaimed to her friend, "oh my god, do you remember these?". Lmaooo. Couldn't tell if it was a good thing. I love the look of them.
Another underrated strap is a twist-o-flex bands. Very classic and comfortable cool.

I had those straps in the 2000's. They were a big thing back in the 2000's Some didn't have a leather strap to slip in but had loops for the spring bars to connect to the band. I even have a silicone one. Back in 2003 I wore a rectangle one with a rectangle watch out in the heat of Los Angeles. It was in July. I had to take the watch off because all day my wrist was covered in sweat. I changed all my leather strap out a few year later because of the Los Angeles heat and haven't ever warn a leather strap since. I don't see those straps too much as I did in the 2000's but I know they are still available at the fossil store.

Hi Jory and everyone else. I really like this channel because it's really down to earth and not snobby at all.
So, when it comes to bund straps. There's actually a downside. I bought a new Oris 1917 that comes with a bund strap. Looks really cool. However, after wearing it for a week (I work in an office, so no hard labor here) I noticed scratches on the watch's case back.
Dirt seems proned to get stuck between the leather and the case back and scratches the watch.
I haven't seen this problem with any of my other watches that I don't wear on a bund strap.
    So, just a little warning.

Glad you reach the 100 K magic number😀. On the subject of straps: I remember going on a military base and (if memory serves me right 1990) seeing either a Zulu or a nylon strap BUT with a cover to hide glare from the glass of the watch. Who made those straps? What’s the name of those straps? Were they government issued? At the time they were only Kaki. Does it remain a mystery?
    Keep on ticking,
    John

I've got a good many bunds, about 10 Soviet style ladder bunds, 3 from a company called ESS which were fitted to its submariner homage called the Military Royale in dark brown and black (seriously nice with 5mm thick soft soft leather and a huge buckle and a 22mm lug fitting) and I also buy some for a few pounds each in black or brown which are simple thick hide cuff bunds from a company in China, two of which I have hand riveted with brass rivets and fitted built in compasses and one has my very early Sekonda Safari on, the other has my Eaglemoss 1940's Luftwaffe "Fliegar" on and just very wearable and rugged. I've now got some quality thick hide offcuts and have been making a good start on doing my own, a very super soft oxblood hide piece will hopefully yield my first proper one and its very enjoyable side pastime.

Bund straps are awesome. I surprisingly stumbled over one at an online shop in my country. It was only available with 18mm lug width, and since it looked really good I ordered it and thought it would be perfect for my Seiko SNK809, which is a kinda mini flieger type B as the dial design goes. Well, that 38mm watch looked ridiculously small on the bund strap. The middle piece was way wider than I expected lol.
I then put my 41mm Escapement Time flieger/chrono hybrid on it which already had a strap with matching colour and white stichings, and the proportions went way better. It now looks like the watch came with that bund middle piece. I'll also try it on another flieger style watch I have. Bund straps are indeed a fun way to change a watch's looks.

Thanks Jory and congrats on 100K, you rock. I have been thinking about the BUND strap for some time now and you are probably the only one who has really made video showing its form and function. If you aren't the first then I am sure your is way better. I already contacted ManCaveLeather and he said he does each one special order and makes it specifically for the dimensions of your watch, so that is so cool. They are $50.00 which is an awesome price if you look at the time to make it and the amount of leather that goes into it. Thanks so much for this informative video. I wonder how my Serica WWW would look on one, well it looks pretty good on about anything if I must say. Stay safe my friend, Brian

I'd like to add a point in addition to what T3 said above. You can use Bund strap to make smaller watches look better on your wrist. I have an 8 inch wrist, and I use a bund strap with my Hamilton Khaki Mechanical. Not only the watch looks awesome, but it doesn't look tiny at all on my wrist.
Btw I got the bundstrap from a local strap maker here in Bangladesh who handmade the strap for me. I wanted my Hamilton Khaki Mechanical to have have a strap with military/war heritage.

Great video and fun to watch, especially your German impersonation 😂.
Alright, I‘m one of the 100k bunch and incidentally have some personal insight on the whole topic concerning citizenship and military affiliation.
BUND is imprinted on many issue items of the German armed forces. It’s meant to be a short term for BUNDESWEHR, which means German Armed Forces. Just as you would find the U. S. branding of your own armed forces issue items.
I have a modern day BUND pilot’s watch in my collection. There’s BUND milled on the caseback and imprinted on the strap. Even though the Third Reich Luftwaffe aircrew on your black&white photo would have worn a similar looking watch strap, the BUND version of the strap was issued later with the newly formed military of the BUNDESREPUBLIK Deutschland 🇩🇪.
Cheers from the other side of the pond.

That’s interesting I like to collect and work on antique pocket watches and the bund strap reminds me of the early conversion strap so you could wear a pocket watch on your wrist.🤔

    • @billestevens3993
      @billestevens3993 4 роки тому +1

Ah yes. I have seen pocket watches sold with little leather slip cases to put the pocket watches in. I imagine they were to protect your pocket watch from being scratched by your keys and loose change in your pocket and your Zippo lighter as well. When I was growing up in the fifties and sixties EVERYONE smoked and EVERYONE had a Zippo lighter in his pocket. (Nowadays, not so much.)
For that matter, while talking to one of my teenage nephews, I referred to the small pocket above the larger pocket on the right front of a pair of blue jeans. I called it a "watch pocket".
He looked puzzled. Apparently he knew what a "pocket" was. He had a vague idea that a "watch" was something that Apple sold so you could talk to your wrist instead of holding your phone to the side of your face. And Uncle Bill, won't you buy me an Apple Watch--all my friends have them already!-- so I can have it for when you buy me an iPhone.
Probing deeper, I steered the conversation into other areas.
I soon determined that he had seen actors in old Western movies pull a round flattish object out of a vest pocket and look at it.
However, he thought it was "a compass or something. Maybe a numchuck?"
I explained that the round thing was called a "pocket watch", which was not at all the same thing as a "watch pocket", and it was important not to confuse the two. Basically, you put the pocket watch into the watch pocket, and not the other way around.
The pocket watch, I explained, was rather like a small non-digital clock (the ones with two or three pointers instead of numbers). The circular watch, then, was fastened to one end of a short piece of chain, while the other end of the chain was fastened to a convenient piece of anatomy. The "watch" would display the time of day with "pointers" behind a circular glass window. The watch could be slipped into a vest pocket when not being consulted.
Of course, I went on, "Not all cowboys have vests. Poorer cowboys just have shirts and sometimes not even shirts. So that's why they put the little "watch pocket" on blue jeans, to put the "pocket watch" in, because not all cowboys have vests, even in the best movies.
I could see he was carefully thinking through the various things and relationships we had discussed.
For my part, I think the next time I visit with my nephew we will have to discuss why six bits is seventy-five cents, who Fred Astaire was, and why there are dimples on a golf ball.

Bill Estevens first of all thank you for replying to my comment and also kids these days I mean I’m only 16 but I’m sure as you can tell from my channel and or profile picture I like to collect and repair pocket watches as I am more of a hands-on person a wristwatch just kind of gets in the way so I usually wear a pocket watch I prefer the 16 size because it fits into the watch pocket.

Congratulations! Cheap, accurate time and GPS are one of the most amazing accomplishments of our time, no pun intended. I am amazed at how many variations and styles of watches have come, and gone, and will be made in the future. All the Best! 73 DE W8LV BILL.

Made a bund strap for my rolex dssd. It actually looks much better than the stock metal strap. I used a burgundy red leather left over from my dads custom shoe project. I'm now making other kinds of straps for my watches as they now feel more personal with a personally handmade strap.

Very cool strap. I'll have to see if they have one that'll fit my SNK809 and pick it up once I get back to work.

Congratulations from Egypt! The bund strap that comes to my mind is the one worn by Brad Bitt in once upon a time in Hollywood.
Hope to see you soon reaching a million viewers :)

In this case, I believe the German word "Bund" means not the Federation, but the thing on garments that holds it to your body - the part of your pants around your waist, or the cuffs of your sweater is called a Bund.

I literally just ordered another one just before I watch this video.
It’s to fit a 31mm 1957 Seiko Unique. I wanted to get a slightly larger footprint for this watch.
