I've always loved this set of variations. It is confident, felicitous and rousing. It always reminds me of Dvorak's Symphonic Variations which also has a mysterious and richly contrasting part in the middle. Being used to the excellent Naxos recording with the RSNO under Andrew Penny, I find this performance a little underwhelming. But I see it's live so one can probably not expect studio quality. Thanks for making a case for this composer ! I feel like I must now go and checkout his symphonies, none of which I have ever heard 😲
There were 4 recordings to choose from, Bamert, Penny, Watkins and Boult. They all have their pros and cons. But Watkins had less copyright issues. Boult had by far the crispest performance but very diffuse and unclear old recording.
I also hear a lot of inspiration from the 4th movement of Brahms' 4th Symphony in here, especially seeing as it was a tribute to the late composer. But nevertheless a very distinctive work.
@@bartjebartmans I mean transpositions are a factor for legible notes, and it's just the first page. But do it as you like, I still appreciate your work a lot.

I've played in this (horn) and agree it feels more Dvorak than Brahms...a lovely work which deserves to be better known!
Horns seem to be in E (please don't cut the first page because of transpositions)
Maybe you should make the video the way you like it. I am interested in legible notes. You can find the score in IMSLP if you need further info.
