Rea had some info on the Paige picture pack issue in a 2021 auction. The larger one is actually 1949 and has seemingly been mislabeled by both psa and sgc as a 1948.
Man, I would love anyone of those cards in my collection. thank you for doing the work and sharing with us, it's definitely nice to see 2 videos from you so quickly.
Great showcase of the auction Dave! I really enjoyed this one and the one you did for REA, cool concept for a video. I appreciate you taking the time to comb through and show us some very interesting cards. The M101-5 Ruth is such an awesome card. That's my grail. Not sure my wife would appreciate that purchase as much as I would... Thanks for sharing!
Thanks Dave for sharing these neat cards up for auction. I think I will need to go outside my comfort zone and delve into auction houses rather than just eBay. So many chances to get something to add to my collection. Good luck on your bids.
The Satchel Paige photos are likely from different years. The 1948 team issue has the cursive signature and is printed on thin paper. The other team photo, with the block-like signature and "Satchell", was issued in 1949 (maybe late 1948), also by the team, and printed on heavier paper card stock. I have both sets in the original envelopes. The envelope is key. The 1949 issue (maybe late 1948), which is scarcer, has an image of Chief Wahoo on the envelope wearing a crown to signify the 1948 World Series championship. There is also a second 1949 team issue, more common, which has action shots and shows an image of Paige in wind-up. In 2020 I saw these team sets gaining in popularity and grabbed a few! I also collect programs from games in which Satchel Paige pitched. I have a scored program from a August 29th, 1951 game where Mickey Mantle hit his 9th career home run off of Paige in the 9th inning of a game at Sportsman's Park in St. Louis. I also have a program from Paige's first save in 1948. Paige doesn't have many cards, so you have to be creative.
@@Bluejacket66 Yep. Likely a 1949 picture pack issue. Looking at the envelope again, it credits the manufacturer as the Big League Novelty Company, so it may not have been a team-issued product as I stated before. I'm not sure if the Big League Novelty Company made other picture packs. However, I do find the 1949 version harder to find than the 1948.
Hi Dave. I really enjoy you doing these auction video's, as your knowledge of vintage and prewar is awesome. As for that Ted Williams 1948 hanging tag, I was so excited when you talked about it, as I picked the same one up (raw), back in November at the Toronto Expo, up here in Canada. I would say it could grade a 4, which I will eventually get graded. I will be watching what it ends up going for. Thanks for sharing as always my friend.
Incredibly ironic. I just finished scrolling through the Heritage Auction site this morning. Saw most of the cards you highlighted but missed the Hires set. It is awesome. Great suggestion about re-thinking how one collects and might consider being a bit more selective. Thanks for all the work you put into this, Dave!
Nice to see another Dave video pop up again so I can learn some facts! Nintendo Power? You always have the most interesting Easter eggs in the background. I haven't seen much Thorpe baseball material. Very cool. Good luck on your auctions!
The R306 Buttercream set is truly beautiful. The promotion for kids to win something was truly diabolical. The absolute tough one was Babe Ruth! Of all the cards to severely short print, in order to impede a youngster to complete a set, to prevent him from sending away for a prize. I enjoyed your comments on the 1954 Dan-Dee Potato Chip Mickey Mantle. I concur---the image of Mickey was his best. When I first saw the Dan-Dee Mick in about 1975, I was blown away by how beautiful it was. Some years later, I saw a Stahl-Meyer Franks Mickey Mantle, and I was instantly amazed at how much more beautiful it was than the Dan-Dee. Be that as it may, if you cannot afford the Stahl-Meyer Mantle, BY ALL MEANS GO AFTER THE DAN-DEE! Happy new year, Dave! --- Brian Powell
No! You did NOT just announce to THE WORLD that they should bid on two auctions that I was interested in! ;-) I guess I'll be paying a Bluejacket premium on these auctions.
Hahahahah outing an auction that is on the internet with millions of eyes on it. Omg - tell me this was made in jest!!! If not let me know as I want that quote as the thumbnail of my next video 😂😂😂😂.
Great cards in the heritage auction for sure! Thanks for sharing these nice treats Dave. That yellow DiMaggio looks awesome in those colors. But yeah the registration is disappointing to say the least lol. Lots of registration issues with those Leaf cards. Some nice low dollar cards, hopefully they stay that way so some of us can bid on them :)
The Satchel Picture Pack images: I’ve looked into this before, but it’s hard to find the definitive answer. This is what I recall: look at the facsimile autographs - the one with a steeper angle I believe is the original, the less angled autograph is an alternate version. It’s unclear as the release date of the alternate. I’m going to try to look into this again and see if there’s anymore info….
@@Bluejacket66Perfect! Thank you - I just read through it - very informative. I’m a huge Tribe fan and my only video on my channel so far is about a Satchel Paige card - I think you may enjoy it.
There’s so much that I love about this video. The choices, the knowledge, the education…. GREAT VIDEO. But, the part where you said, “uh….i suck” when trying to get the computer to zoom….had me rolling.
I have a couple people that now have an interest couple of those cards. That makes me feel good. A big part of the UA-cam and collecting community do not know what’s out there or how to access it. That’s my goal… for someone to discover , but and fall in love with an issue they never new existed Btw- if you don’t mind, I’d like your # to text. I was thinking about having a debate/ discussion / argument with Mangini about restored cards. I was thinking of you joining or moderating. He’s about ready to blow his stack and I want to poke the bear😂
Today’s overbid is tomorrow’s bargain. These people that REALLY want a card, but refuse to push the limits will never get the card, and will watch it increase in cost/value
@@Bluejacket66 I was the underbidder on the Johnston Cookies Aaron so lost by $50?? (who knows other bidder could have been willing to go hundreds more). Will get one someday - hopefully happier with that one than I would have been with this one. Have to set a limit but I would rather be outbid by many than just one. To me the worst place to be in an auction is the underbidder because you never know what you truly lost by! I bid an amount that I thought would win it - on to the next card! Congrats to whomever won - I am sure they will enjoy the card.
If those Satchel’s are actual photographic paper… They appear to be a different run, by a technician who ZOOMED out to print the wider image? Could also be a test, or prototype version ? These were team issued? Team produced, as well… or produced by MLB? I started off 2024 acquiring a few dozen 1910-12 Sweet Caporal pins! Lots of red paper inserts. Have you done a video on them? 🎉

Fun video Dave! Always a learning experience.
Thanks Scott! Have a great weekend
Very helpful run through some nice selections, thanks for doing this. The Dan Dee Mantle SGC 2 is up to $2000 now, though!
Idk what it will go for. Sometimes lower grade cards that look great go for surprising premium
Another fun look at auction items through iconic eyes! 🤪

great video dave. They're supposed to come out with a new standard vintage catalog this year.

Somehow missed this one. Couldn't stop drooling.
