What an awesome road trip story! what a small world! We just returned from a road trip to see my Dad in Florida. Unfortunately, he ended up in the hospital the day we arrived so I spent every afternoon sitting with him and gave my sister a break. We take 3 nights on the road to get to Naples from Massachusetts. He was finally released and is doing great, My oldest son and family came down so we were able to
spend time with them. The weather was either boiling or raining with thunder and lightning. Not very fun. But I wasn’t there to have fun. I was , however, getting my mom’s sewing machine so I’m pleased with that. I brought some knitting and crochet with me but I , too, can only do it for just so long. I enjoyed reading some knitting mysteries while I was just sitting. We got home a couple of hours ago and I’m going to bed. I’m so tired, lol. I Love all of your projects and can’t wait to see your finished sweater. My sister, the fine artist, took a Mark Making
and a Coil weaving workshop with Textile Support. It’s really very cool! Thanks for another great podcast. Safe travels!💗

Another great episode. Thanks so much. I haven't watched Baumgartner Resortations-yet-but it reminds me that you might enjoy The Repair Shop on Netflix. It's an English program and they take such loving care with each item to bring it back to life. It's true, I think that knitters enjoy all crafts-maybe not doing them all but certainly watching.

Love the show "The Repair Shop" out of the UK , for all the fascinated repairs and restorations. One of my binge watches while knitting. :) I have always been amazed with Lucia Scalisi from The Repair Shop . She really knows her art and has done miracles with old paintings brought in that have seen some damage , and has been able to bring them back to their former glory.

I really want to thank you for showing the modular blanket book! I'm always a bit careful buying knitting books, because most of the times it contains not so many real new things. But this book I purchased immediately, it's amazing! I've got lots of scraps of sock yarn and small amounts of home spun yarn, and I like to make bigger things and garments out of small pieces, so now I can make something different.

Wow! Thank you for that "Invention of Trousers" tidbit. I spent quite a bit of time recently trying to perfect the fit of my own custom pants. It's one of the most difficult garments to fit well. So seeing how those ancient pants were created was inspiring!

I would LOVE to see you knit a pair of socks from the 1948 booklet. It is so interesting how knitting has evolved. I remember my Mom's friend knitting my Dad argyle socks. She had the yarn on bobbins to change the colors.

Roxanne,,enjoyed your podcasts. It's nice to get out and with friends, especially after the year we've had. Understand about getting bored doing the stockinette stitch. Making a long rectangular shawl using mohair and silk. It's taking forever. LOL Have 91 yr old knitter friend who has several old knitting books. It's fun to go thru them.

I thought it was so funny when I saw the sewing book you got. I attended and graduated from a tailoring and design school in the early 80's. The pictures in your book were the same pictures from my design books from school. I still have them and had recently was thinking of getting them out and trying to draft some patterns.

Oh my gosh! Your 1940's sock book is one MT mother had. The first pair (and last until this year) of socks I ever made is the blue argyle pattern on front cover. Mom was crazy to put herself through holding my 10 year old hand through making those. They were awful, pulled the bobbins too tight so the leg was beyond tight but my dad somehow got them on and I remember him going off to work in them (don't know if he changed them out in the car). What a nice memory you gave me. Thank you.

    Roxanne,
Great podcast! What a small world when you connect with a few persons from your past and present life. 😺 Nice to see you're having a fabulous trip, thanks for sharing.
That dressmakers' book is an awesome find, wouldn't mind one of those myself! Several years back, my husband and I were visiting his cousin and her husband for the first time after they were married. I love looking through 'people's' bookcases to see what 'gems' may be found. As I did so in their home, I noticed many books, some may have been vintage, on fashion design, etc.__a few shelves worth collected by the man of the house. When I asked about them with hightened interest he said they were remnants of his education in fashion design and that he shifted interest in that field when he discovered how many male designers are gay__he, being more immersed in his belief system. My point in telling this 'story' is, upon a second visit a few months later, all those books were no longer in the bookcase. When I asked about them [he] said he got rid of them. AAAHH! He never asked me if I would like to have them__I would have paid for them! 😭 BUMMER!
BTW, if you're interested, check out "SureFit" pattern/sewing method. They have a channel on YT. Very comprehensive education on making your own clothes. I had one of their original 'kits' back in the early 1970's. Even if you have no interest in purchasing the program you can really learn a lot from the podcasts__for ex: the various types of darts, their placements, and modifications for 'your' body. Pretty cool!
Anyway, thanks again for a great visit. 💖🙌🙌🙌😺

This sounds like a wonderful trip. If you liked the Baumgarten videos, you might enjoy some videos from the National Gallery in London. Some videos are about the paintings and artists themselves, but there are a number of restoration videos. There is a series about Artemisia Gentileschi. World famous paintings present particular challenges. There are also some restoration-oriented videos from the Frick and the Metropolitan Museum in New York. You're right--crafts people are often fascinated by watching other skillful crafts people.

Coincidences abound! When I was getting back into sewing garments, the Alder Shirtdress was my second pattern after pajamas. I made it a bunch of times, getting better every time, and my first version serves me very well as a dress for housework days in the hot weather. This version is made from an old shower curtain so it’s a little stiff, which means it doesn’t stick to me when I’m sweaty😂 The Alder is definitely a pattern that will improve your skills, and the company has an online tutorial for every step. Have fun!🥰

For the sleeves on your 1960's sweater, would it be terrible to use maybe a another tone of blue to do the cuffs? I know you were using an alternate skein of yarn for seaming that was close, but not exact. I'm thinking that might be too close for it to look purposeful, but perhaps using a darker version of the 1960's yarn would give you a cuff that looks purposefully different but also allow you to get the length you want.

Copyright cannot be known for items published after the mid-1920s (in the US) without checking with the US Copyright office. (Some copyright holders dutifully renewed their registered copyright; others did not.) The laws are different outside the US. In the UK, some items are in a kind of copyright limbo -- there is no one to claim ownership, but the item still is not in the public domain. Not sure what the laws are in Canada.

Because the pattern booklet was published in 1950, it is not in the public domain. You can likely find a copy of the booklet from an online seller, though. It's called Style Knits by Beehive, Book No. 88.

      @RoxanneRichardson  3 роки тому

@@janegibson6678 Given that this pattern was published in Canada, and their copyright laws are in line with the UK's, the existence, or lack of existence of the copyright holder wouldn't automatically prove or negate copyright status. There are publications known as "orphan works," where the copyright holder is no longer around, but the copyright still exists, which means it is not in the public domain. ETA: the publication was a Patons pub, and that company certainly still exists. :-) ETA 2: You can find this booklet online for sale from several sellers, so it is available, it's just not available as a free digital download.
