Tail of the Dragon is a bit overrated IMO. There are great drives all over WNC/East Tenn. All one needs is a GPS in case you get lost. Many of our twisty roads are lightly travelled to boot so you can open up a bit (within reason). A LOT of cool gravel roads too. WNC/East Tenn would be an AWESOME place to hold rally races, the mix of twisty gravel and paved roads is insane around here.
Over aggressive "adult adolescents" and young adults trying to prove how massive their balls are is more in line with stupidity than culture. @@iMickel
I couldn't drive that road simply because of the stupidly low speed limit, no point in having a car like the MX5 and just pottering your way on that road it would actually drive me insane
Just go on a Tuesday afternoon and NEVER CROSS THE YELLOW LINE. I have been through there on a bike and in my NA and have never had an issue with cops even a fair bit above the limit.
@@wg5768 nope. original TV series aired 1963 - 1967. perhaps you watched it in syndication in the 70s. Assuming you were alive then. and he specifically said "Harrison Ford", so, that would be the movie . . .
This was my first time at MATG and on the Dragon with my NB Miata ❤Loved your video of the drive. And you’re right, all the roads around there are so gorgeous and fun to drive on. Also right that Miata owners are all so nice 🥰 MATG made me more passionate about miatas and fun driving
Ran the Tail of the Dragon a few years back on a Yamaha R1....I'm only about an hour and a half away, so I might take the NC1 out there. Thanks for the video.
Hey Guys, Welcome to Tennessee! I live here in Murfreesboro. Been wanting to bring my Miata to do the TOTD, but just hadn't made it yet. I've been watching some of your videos and really enjoy them. Hope y'all enjoy your visit here and be safe. Tim.
Hey, I love taking my NB1 west of town as much as possible. If you don’t already know there’s a lot of nice twistys between Ashland City, Dickson, and Charlotte. I also love doing runs out past Leiper’s Fork and old Natchez trace. It’s no Deal’s Gap but it sure is fun and convenient for us. Hope to see you out there on the road sometime!
I made one side trip there, for one day, in 2012, in my, at the time, 95 NA Black and Tan. Got stopped by a Tennessee statie before I even reached the overlook. I think i was doing all of 46 mph. Only gave me a written warning thankfully, but i did the rest of my runs ... carefully... since the trooper left no doubt that if i was stopped again, I'd regret it. Still it was worth the trip, glad I did it. And indeed, that is a beautiful area. Thanks for sharing your trip with us!
1000+ Miata how cool. Looks like alot of fun to drive it. Doubt me an my 2016 Soft top ND ever make it there but I certainly enjoyed your adventure on it. Thanks for shareing your experience.
beautiful part of the country on east side. Smokey, Black, Slippery Rock, Ashville, and host of tourist areas. end of September is the best time to visit with summer traffic gone and air is cool for top down driving. I have been going here since late 80s' with one of my college roommate from Asheville. never gets tiring visiting this area
Looks like a gorgeous road. Thanks for taking us along for the drive. It's unlikely I'll ever get to take my NC there as I'm in Australia and my NC1 isn't seaworthy. I had a sense of frustration watching the video - 30MPH speed limit is criminal on such a nice road. Keep up the great work.
My extensive research showed it to be called "Tail of the Dragon", reaffirmed by many locals. However, many people shorten it to the "Dragon", it's way easier to say hah. Many people seem to use them interchangeably, somewhat akin to "Highway 1" or "The 1" in Cali. *shrug*
Cool vid. I like the mic set up on the plate. What is it and about how long does the battery last? Just to help clarify on the dams. The one at the beginning of the video is Cheoah dam and the one you can see from the overlook is Calderwood dam. I made the same mistake on my first trip to the dragon as well.
This is the Rode Wireless ME microphone set. Though the new Wireless Pro from Rode is even better with the same dynamic gain adjustment perfect for exhaust audio. Battery lasts for hours of filming so never really a concern. Thanks for the tip on the damn! Now that I look at the map, that makes way more sense hah.

…great roads, especially out of Highland, NC
You are exactly right. Might be a rally near Ocoee in 2024. Great roads down here around Chattanooga too
Of course there's better roads out there, but those roads don't have giant gatherings, or motorcycle resorts.
But none with culture like this

Can you do a video on your go pro mounts? I'm wanting info on what you do. Cheers

you all follow speed limits?
Very few people actually drive the speed limit....but you take your chances and hope that oncoming traffic will warn you of LEOs up ahead.

PRO TIP: Drive the Dragon late at night
18:40 he stop talking
I realize you weren't born yet either way, but "The Fugitive" came out in 1993, not "the 70s', lol.
The original tv show came out in the 70s.

I wish I could say you're right, but I was born 5 days before The Fugitive came out. Shows how much I know about Harrison Ford's movie catalog.

arounf 20, 21 min - that "F1 brakelight" is a JDM/ Euro rear foglight, I think.
I wanted to take my 2013 Miata thru the Tail of the Dragon, but I need to go to the Philippines, so it's for sale.

you pass me at 23:48 ! i can see my bald head LOL matg was awesome, lookin forward to your vid on that
No disrespect, but you need to learn how to drive with both hands on the wheel.
Did the Blueridge Parkway and Skyline last Summer in my NC. Great drive during the week with light traffic. Enjoyed the video.

That movie was "Star Wars IV"
are you still using the roadstersport super-q exhaust? the car sounds amazing!
I am, yes! This is that, tied now with the Racing Beat header.
Cool. Me and my daughter are in your video! Montego NA and blue NA that were a couple cars behind you.
GREAT color!
Lovin the miata content, my guy! Got an NC myself that I love!
Usually these Tail vids are a bit boring but you sir make it interesting with your energy, enthusiasm, and friendship. Great vid!

Nice footage! If I ever branch out into filming outside California I’ll have to check out some of the roads around there.
I was supposed to be there this year. But the universe had different plans. I've driven it, but not in my Miata. In a 2010 Hyundai accent. Hahaha

Injecting FOMO into my veins.
See you next year. 😌
Always enjoy! Great video…thanks!
It was nice meeting you at the yellow Miata meet
The road is called The Dragon. “Tail of the Dragon” is a business that capitalized on the popularity of the road.

did you make a header install video? i must have missed it!
It just came out, but after this video. You didn't miss it! I just release things out of order...
