XJ220, F40, Countach .... these are the REAL supercars which will always remain in my heart (+ the a bit underpowered F355). These are the ones i'll always want. You have to be a REAL men to drive them. No electronic aids, real-feel heavy steering, pure exhaust sound, not valves being opened and closed by computers; u have 8 or 12 cylinder - all of them work, not turning them off for FUEL ECONOMY IN A SUPERCAR !!!
The XJ220 is still mightily impressive to this day, but the XK-RS did well to be not much slower, considering the XJ was one of the fastest cars in it's day and the XK-RS in modern is a quick GT car.
The xj220 was the fastest car in 92 to 94, but when the F1 was released, it put the 220 in the shades, but when the F1 was discontinued. That's when the Xj220S came into play.
The XJ220 will look book better in 20 years time compared to the XK-RS.....It's timeless and 0-60 in 3.6 seconds is still amazing now. It handles fine too albeit a bit heavy! It's got Character!
Was anybody really surprised by the result of the drag race? I wasnt. As for the lap... well. The new toy has all the fancy gizmos, traction control and ABS to run it through the track. The old and sexy XJ220 only had what it came with back in the early 90s.
@@thomascampr Yes, aided by far more power and 20 odd years advancement in technology. At a time when most other more experience supercar manufacturers were still trying to crack 200 mph,the Jaguar(a manufacturer on its arse financially) came along and blew them into the weeds with with what is by today's standards a simple car with an engine that can trace it's roots back to the stone age!,a modern comparative would be a Jaguar that hits 330+ mph. Credit where it's due,the XJ 220 was a tremendous achievement which raised the bar.
You hear the collective chins hitting the floor when all those, who’d put up a massive deposit and pre-ordered an XJ220, found out that instead of the promised V12 and 4 wheel drive they were getting a Metro engine and rear wheel drive!
yea the XK was never intended as this full on race car, the XKR-S was technically just this anniversary edition for the car, just so that they could do a bit of fun with the car before ending production.
Put the same tires on the XJ220 and it would of absolutely spanked the xkrs time, That's leaving out dampers, brakes, etc, As I bet it hasn't been updated since it was built...
@James England... exactly All these car shows are the same. Another big one top gear took an Audi Quattro rally car vs a hot hatch. But the Quattro had dirt tires and was wallowing about, You could clearly tell they purposely set it up to lose...
Yep! Ferrari F50 over LaFerrari any day!! Mclaren F1 cooler than P1 Porsche Carrera GT and 959 over 918 Diablo over Aventador (though that Aventador is still badass)
Here's the thing, I think a regular , " average" driver could probably get the newer one around the track faster than the old beast. You could tell Tiff was busting out many of the old racing tricks to keep that XJ220 nose forward rubber down.
Antifaith29 Well he is a rather accomplished racing driver, and it was the new car hanging it's arse right out on every corner, whereas the XJ220 raced around with hardly a hint of tail slide.
Now when top gear is gone. Are you going to review some of the new Koenigsegg? Please let me know so i can wach your videos or should stay away from you.
To be fair to the XJ220, look at all the cars that were considered 'fast' in 1994. The average hatchback these days could give a '90s sports car a run for its money. Time marches on. Fat rubber and better brakes has a lot to do with it.
Slower than a 17 year old car. Thank goodness motorcycles don't 'progress' at this snails pace. The pole in the 1994 Jerez 500GP, with the fastest motorcycle in the world, worth several million dollars, running qualifying slicks was 1:43.944. Last year 10 000 dollar, 600cc commuter bike running treaded road tyres, a sports exhaust and with the indicators removed ran 1:44.293. Are there any midrange cars that can lap within 101% of the time of a 17 year old F1 car?
A super bike and a GP bike are broadly similar. An F1 car is NOTHING like a road car. A better comparison would be an Audi Quattro vs an EVO X, Or a old DTM car vs a Camaro Z28.
***** That was pretty much my point. We've known for decades how to build cheap light fast and importantly, much safer sportscars. However the F1 tech never gets to the road. This front engined "sports" car shares a basic configuration with a 1950's race car. F1 cars are as you rightly point out *NOTHING* like a road car. I can go down to the shops today and buy a car that has a pushrod engine designed in the 1950's (and it was far from ground breaking even then). Sure it's got some electronics bolted on and is made of better metals, but it's basically 90 year old technology. Even this super expensive sports car uses an engine designed when MC Hammer's "Can't touch this" was in the charts... If it was a person it would be old enough go down the pub and buy it's mates a beer. Tyres are not much different. The tyres on my car now are barely any better than the ones on my car when I first started driving in the 1970's. The pressed steel body of my car is very similar in basic construction to the one's my Father drove before I was born. In contrast, the GP tech on race bikes *does* get to the road. That's why they're "broadly similar". If we were still riding motorcycles that were based on designs from 1920 then you'd say the same thing. GP bikes are *NOTHING* like road bikes.
A car that was set out to be one of the worlds fastest and most expensive cars is quicker than a relatively fast GT car worth about £100k, who'd have thunk it? A lot can change in 17 years, but the XK-RS and XJ220 are completely different cars, ones a mega hypercar, the others a fast comfy GT car, I don't see your problem. The fact that the GT car came so close to the once £400k supercar/hypercar is pretty impressive imo
***** Again you make my point. That push rod engine is about the best "car" engine on the market. I don't know how they sell them in the 21st century with a straight face. I'm over 50 years old and my *father* had one when I was in short pants. A 5.7 litre engine that made 155 hp. Less than 30 hp per litre. Being that understressed it should be so reliable that they're still running today. Instead they took constant expensive maintenance, would stop if you turned on the air-conditioning and were cactus after 200 000 km. I haven't seen a running one from that era for 20 years. 40 years of development later and with the better metals they get 72 hp/litre (if you fork over an extra 120 000 dollars for the "performance" version www.carsguide.com.au/car-news/hsv-w427-super-holden-to-cost-150000-15906#.VROS8M3I-1E) and can go as much as 300 000 km before they blow enough smoke that it's impossible to follow them. AJ-V8 all new in 2009? Did they ship them to the XJ308 factory for the 1997 model range with a time machine? Oh, by "all new" you mean there's a new part number on the block but everything is interchangeable?
It's not just the engines, (though owning a 15 year old Asian commuter bike that makes 200 hp/l makes the 125 hp/l of a Bugatti Veyron feel pretty absurd) it's everything. In 1981 Antonio Cobas invented a new frame design for GP racing that was a substantial improvement. Before the 80's were out most motorcycles had that frame design (or a copy of it at least). Under 10 years from ground breaking GP innovation to normal road fare. In contrast cars are still built with the kind of pressed steel construction that hasn't been used in motorcycles for 50 years. There are similar examples from tyres, suspension, brakes, even hand lever design. There isn't one single thing that has gone from invention to wide adoption in the car world in under a decade. Wait, maybe CD players... It's utterly glacial by comparison.
+Michael Parker wrong, Chris Harris took the same car and tried to keep up with a 220 on the Nurburg Ring and on the straights the XJ220 just basically said "bye bye" and fucked off down the road.
+Michael Parker "The Jaguar XJ220 held the Nürburgring production car lap record between 1992 and 2000 with a time of 7:46.36." Definitely not made to be on the track...
The XK R-S Nurgurgring record is only a few seconds off the XJ220, but I'm talking about a real track where the modern equipment on the XK R-S would give the advantage.
-World's fastest production car/road car from 1993 to 1995 -World's fastest V6 car since 1993 (note that the road/street legal version of the XJ220C is even faster) -Held the Nürburgring lap record from 1993 to 2000
Hard to believe that XJ220 was designed 30 years ago now, still a beautiful design that has aged much better than a lot of newer cars.
that XJ220 is such an iconic classic still kicks so much butt
If I could only choose one, it would be the XJ220 for the sheer fact that it's such an iconic looking car, and will break necks everywhere it goes.
Actually impresed with XJ220!
All hail to the xj220 my childhood dream car always and forever
For me is the Aston Martin vanquish
I live how easy these guys make 3 digit power oversteer drifts.
Instead of holding their breath, they giggle....
Mad driving skills.

XJ220 is a V6
I would add the Porsche 959 to that list of iconic super cars
Countach was never a good car. Might be good looking for some but it was underpowered and terrible to drive.
F1
McLaren F1 missing from that list also
i love the way the cured the fugly headlights of that generation of XK, these look gorgeous
The Xj220 is 7 foot wide still looks beautiful tho
The XJ220 is still mightily impressive to this day, but the XK-RS did well to be not much slower, considering the XJ was one of the fastest cars in it's day and the XK-RS in modern is a quick GT car.
I love my 510+ HP 5.0 XKR
Same here!
F-Type R vs XJ220 would be interesting comparison :)
what a driver..
The xj220 was the fastest car in 92 to 94, but when the F1 was released, it put the 220 in the shades, but when the F1 was discontinued. That's when the Xj220S came into play.
XJ220S was introduced in 1996, the F1 was made until 1998.
Heard him say "...a 100,000 pound car!"
My initial American interpretation... "Holy crap that car is heavy!"
This guy is still better at reviewing and driving cars than Hammond, May, Evans et al. Used to watch him on the old top gear, sign him up BBC!
rickenfatania Tiff was a genuine racing driver, raced a lot in GT like Le Mans. I remember him racing the Lister Storm in the late 90’s
Anyone know what components they share?
The XJ220 will look book better in 20 years time compared to the XK-RS.....It's timeless and 0-60 in 3.6 seconds is still amazing now. It handles fine too albeit a bit heavy!
It's got Character!
Jaguar XJ220 vs Bugatti EB110 GT would be interesting comparison
The EB110 SuperSport !!!
The Grand Tour just did that
grand tour did that not too long ago
4:12 Fifth Gear left an "oh fucking" in there I notice 😝👌
Released in 1992*. The production ended in 1994.
right when Ford took over Jag. dam Ford!
Was anybody really surprised by the result of the drag race? I wasnt.

There was no way a Xkrs was going to beat a Xj220. The Xj220 destroyed a Zonda 7.3 S
Buggati and pagani and many more blow the Jag away.
thomascampr irrelevant
+Ian Townsend whats a zonda? sounds like a junk car.
Probably not on price though! The XKR-s is affordable compared to the others.

R-S looks like something Toyota would make for teenagers. Sorry. XJ220 is perfect, and always will be.
the XKR R maybe more your taste too.
It does look better, I agree. :)
yea the XK was never intended as this full on race car, the XKR-S was technically just this anniversary edition for the car, just so that they could do a bit of fun with the car before ending production.
True, the XK is a bit of a GT. Those are designed for long distance journeys also, at high speed on the striaght motorways of Europe prfereably.
It would be interesting to see if a Type F R coupe would any closer
Ian Townsend SVR would be faster than both but just by a hair over XJ220. SVR 0-150 16.9
XJ 220 0-150 17.3
XKR-S. 0-150 20.0

my favorite car JAGUAR XJ 220
Please make the XJ220 vs. C-X75
Need For Speed II SE brings me here!
Siendo del 94 vaya pepino de jaguar.
Well XJ220 drove almost 220
The xk looks like a toaster next to the xj220 lol
XK RS problem is it is way to heavy.
I am so disappointed the new F-type has such long and thin headlights. Also the tail lights look like crap. The XK was the best contemporary Jaguar
Bring back the XJ220.
Tiff is the best! XJ220 is the best
Like to see it against a turbo 911
+BestCanKeanRob2 Hmmmm..... i don't know. In corners, Porsches are superb, and on the straight the 911 GT3 RS is insane.....

450000 £ in1993 vs 150000£

Not an XF. I have one and wish it was an XKR although my sister-in-law has one in Florida which I have driven. Awesome car!
shit version of topgear which is now a shit version of The Grand Tour

xj200 never was the "fastest car on planet"
fastest Road Car !!!
You're right because there was no car called the XJ200.
The McClaren F1 took the title of it almost immediately. It was for a brief time the world's fastest road car.
rickenfatania

-World's fastest production car/road car from 1993 to 1995
-World's fastest V6 car since 1993 (note that the road/street legal version of the XJ220C is even faster)
