Hi Andy, you'll probably will never read this comment, but I really would like to thank you for your videos and suggestions. This video in particular helped me to craft my CV as a self-taught developer, and in just 2 weeks of job searching, I managed to get a job as a Front End Dev, with a starting salary way above my expectations! Recruitment companies were calling me at least twice a day or sending me emails with multiple job positions - and 90% of the time, they were proposing me jobs good for more experienced devs, but they were happy to put my CV forward anyway. So, thank you again! And if you are out there looking for your fist job as a dev, do follow this guy advice! It works!
Congrats, though I am curious about whom you wrote as your reference? As a self taught developer, all the projects in the Experience section will be your own. So how would you solve that? Trying to change fields and craft my own resume but I do not know about the reference since all i have, I have on my own or it was a professional course.

I find this useful as a non programmer but aspiring data scientist. I recently applied to a bunch of data science jobs with my old resume (updated skills) cuz I’m soon graduating from my current quantitative MS program. I’m also a career changer so all my prior experience doesn’t directly related. I got a no back from DoorDash yesterday and in that email they said my track doesn’t seem to align with data science but I included GitHub link as well thinking they could just take a look at that. one of the most frustating things as a self taught programmer is when you go to the first interview and they dismiss you inmediatly when they hear in person that you are self-taught, a huge waste of time for them, for me and for my current employers
It's true, They don't like to see where you didn't worked as Programmer, but I tried this one, I removed the shity work and it worked. But, the problem I had was that, they asked what did you do on that empty time 😭
You can simply put a section 'Worked in Travel' for instance with years 2010-2014 next to it. Maybe give it the heading 'non-relevant work experience'.
Talent won't remain on the ground. Just focus on your skills and hone them. Everything else is gonna be alright. Those how complain about not getting a job because they messed their resumes are just plain basket cases. I love software development because your work speaks for you and there is not much need for theatricals. Just hit your keyboard make some god damn projects!
I don't think it matters whatever to include in your resume. You know people or try to get to know people who can put you in a postion for an intern and then work your ass off in the first three months before you eventually land a full-time real job.
This gives me more hope because one thing that holds me back is my utterly embarrassing and totally irrelevant work history. Despite having two college degrees and despite having a huge passion for programming, I feel like my work history makes me look like a loser on paper. This makes me feel better and more confident in just omitting it in full in favor of some great projects. I've thrown all my focus into building the best projects I can (which are still in progress), but this gives me confidence that this will truly pay off for me and I won't be held back by my lack of experience forever.

As soon as I got serious about finishing and deploying my personal website to showcase my projects, as well as thoroughly updating my LinkedIn profile, a manager from a really awesome local engineering company reached out to me to start interviewing for a software development position on a web dev team. I've been there for one year now and it's been an incredible experience. I got pretty lucky with getting those interviews so easily and didn't have to do any legwork at all. But I think what it shows is that if you're serious, somewhat skilled, and confident, you can easily find a job in this field. I absolutely recommend anyone who is procrastinating putting themselves out there to stop immediately and get out there. Because if you're serious about working there are definitely companies looking for serious people who are passionate about development. If that's you, get out there and start getting real experience! But I've learned a TON about deployments, cloud technology, authentication, and TypeScript. That and generally improved my comfortability with common and best practices by leaps and bounds beyond what I was doing on my own. Gotten 100% better with git. Working with talented seniors has made a big difference in my confidence, and I felt pretty confident going in! But when you really get in there you really realize what all you still need to learn. When looking at a resume myself I don't like seeing every programming language because it would indicate the person isn't specialized in one particular just learned some of all. Keeping it shorter makes it look more authentic.
can you make a video on how to answer Software Engineering phone screen interview questions? I always struggle with open-ended questions like "explain your workflow, how do you tackle a given task assigned to you, explain a project that you worked on, what were some challenges, at what point do you ask for help when you're stuck?" etc etc. I almost never impress when answering these.

Include a brief section on prior career. But the important thing is NOT to highlight it, it is like a footnote. Once you highlight and say "I was the best Croupier in the World' then the trouble starts for you.

I'm no expert, but I've heard from other people to leave off the "junior" part. The company you're applying for will decide whether to place you in a junior position or not.

volunteering is your solution to that. Find nonprofit orgs and offer your service for free and explain why you're doing this. never forget to ask for a referral or endorsement letter.
How about doing one for data science or SQL? I have a BS in CSCI but would rather do data science since it interests me more due to involving more math which is my forte, but I can't land even an entry level data science job with my degree, and don't have another $40k burning a hole in my pocket for another degree.
Love your videos but I disagree with the premise of not putting previous experience such as "starbucks" on resume. Companies want to see that you have some sort of customer service experience dealing with customers/clients. As a developer, you will have to interact with clients and people. So putting Starbucks on resume is a good idea because it shows you have experience in customer service and working as a team. Those are positives that any employer should want regardless of the company you came from.
I've tested this with hundreds of clients. It tends to work against you. You can talk about your experience working in unrelated jobs in the interview process.

You definitely put it because it is technical schooling and not unrelated to programming. Andy is referring to unrelated work and studies - e.g. Starbucks, Working at the Car Wash, Coaching Swimming etc.

By sharing my hobbies associated to learning and problem solving i not only claim to have the traits of someone who deserves the job but i prove it at the same time. When they read that about you they have questions and they want to learn more about you and you get the interview. When in the interview they often ask if i have created anything im proud of, i program and tinker with electronics, so i often share a story about first starting out in electronic engineering where i would sit at a computer for hours looking up and reading datasheets of specific components, and creatung and testing circuits for endless hours. The hc795 shift register really got my interest and i hand made an 8x8 led matrix powered by a battery that played an animation with variable speed with 64 leds, 2 dozen resistors, a dozen transistors, 2 capacitors, 2 buttons, 3 shift registers, 1 potentiometer, and a 555 timer. It was so crudely made and i made is as compact as i could even cutting the legs off the microchips and soldered everything together without any shorts in the size of a pingpong ball but the matrix itself was about 4x4 inches. The length of the story and your passion about it will really show you are an aspiring candidate. And of course i share pictures of the creations as validation.
But, as a programmer, couldn’t I just develop a program to auto fill my resume with with the identical requirements of the job in white font so its invisible. But makes it the first resume pulled. 🤔 your welcome🤫

I don't agree about the "about me" section. A CV is a technical document. If you want to tell a compelling story that is what the cover letter is for.
