16:25 They not just could've taken him as a prisoner for intel, shooting an unarmed, wounded soldier also is a war crime if I'm not mistaken. It's honestly amusing how all these WW2 games don't have the balls to make a campaign for the Germans, Italians, Japanese, Hungarians, Finnish or whatever because "muh bad side", but they have no problem with showing the protagonists committing war crimes without pointing out THAT IT IS a war crime. Black and white-washing. There are good guys. And there are bad guys. And the bad guys do not deserve mercy or humane treatment. Just like you mentioned later in the video, the Germans always have the faces covered in order to hide emotions (visible from mouth and eyes). You're not supposed to see them as actual human beings that have feelings and emotions. Just the enemy that you are supposed to kill without mercy. To be honest, it fucking pisses me off.
Not every German soldier was a nazi they were just drafed into the army to fight a war their country started they had families too they didn't want to die but cod can't make that game because you won't kill Hans the family man so you have to kill the EVIL expressionless DIRTY NAZI that's why they have face coverings on I don't think their wearing them for COVID in WW2
So now everybody thinks Germans are just heartless I've been to Germany in the 80s during the cold war and I have nothing but good things to say about their history cuisine and people you don't see any remnants of Nazism because how they felt about it
War crimes happened on both sides but COD can't show that part because it can't dehumanize the victors because that would be bad for business because In this PC world that never happened but the Holocaust and the rape of Nanking absolutely did just to make the Germans and japanese absolutely horrendous but the US and allies can do it but it's part of war
@@paulnolan8964 Yeah, in the very beginning of the game, one of the protagonists even gloats about "marrying" German women as if it's a badass thing to do. If that's how the developers are gonna treat mass rape, then why don't they patronize the Japanese as their champions?
Today's society is full of damn snowflakes. And it pisses me off, war isnt, wasn't and won't be supposed to be kid friendly. If only we could get games like cod waw...
Italians are Always forgotten when talking about WW2... Even if they helped Germany a lot during the African, Balkan and Russian campaign, they saved many German soldiers during the retreat after the defeat of El Alamein, without surrender and fighting untill the last breath and bullet (Folgore), but still the Activision think only Germans fought there and that Italians haven't done anything good in that period... I am italian even if my name and surname aren't
The game has to ultimately appeal a broad audience. Italy hasn't been determinant to the extent of other countries during ww2 and it's not really considered a strong military country today so people may not really relate to fighting against Italians. It's marketing. Then, doing research on uniforms and weapons and hiring Italian actors for the voices for just one mission would've been too much work considering how many factions are represented already in the game. Sadly, in development compromises have to be done sometimes.
Hitler had zero interest in North Africa. Benito Mussolini was the one who invaded North Africa and his army ended up flopping and so Germany had to come to Italy's rescue in North Africa.
@@NostalgicGamerRickOShay that's not entirely true though. Hitler had an interest in controlling the Suez Canal as the middle east was another way for him to get to the Crimea oil fields. Controlling North Africa was also really important to prevent allied actions in the Mediterranean. Losing control of North Africa meant the Allies had easy access to the Pyreneean peninsula and ultimately allowed for an invasion of Sicily (which you know how it went)
I agree that Call of Duty Vanguard is INSULTING towards both the Allied Powers and the Axis Powers. I was disappointed that there were no Italian soldiers in both North African missions in this game. The Italians demonstrated bravery THROUGHOUT THE NORTH AFRICAN CAMPAIGN, so they deserve representation in WWII video games. The Germans were the major offenders of the war, but they still have their own perspective to be told! I am also disappointed with how arrogant and incompetent the British general was. The British had excellent relationships with their Commonwealth, so the British general should not have been placing the blame on the Australians. Do you believe that the game developers for Call of Duty Vanguard are crappy people? Let me know because I would like to hear your opinions. (These are just my honest thoughts after watching this video and I do not expect for anyone to agree with me).
I assume a designer just searched "British soldiers in Africa" and saw pictures of those from the Boer War and in WW1. By God, if my assumption is true, then their laziness is appalling

There is a limit to how much you can shrug off. Adding, say, one too many SKS rifles to the Reichstag assault? Sure, it's a cool gun, it was around at the time more or less and was used in very small numbers as far as I read. For the sake of gameplay, sure, put it at Seelow, it's not proper, but hey, it's in the game, might as well use it. But then there is disrespect of history. Literally changing important details, making big people with big roles into small people who did nothing, giving Japanese guys Becker shotguns and so on. There is enhancing gameplay, and there's spitting on history.
@@hyena_4740 I know, I'm a firearms enthusiast. What I was talking about was the SKS45, which reportedly was in Berlin in VERY small numbers, and my point in saying that was it's not such a huge deal to maybe exaggerate guns or move them back a year, but it's another thing entirely to give an SKS to a Japanese pilot.
18:30 noticed the emblem of the 'Sturmabteilung' which was a paramilitary Nazi organization in german homeland and had absolutely nothing to do with the german campaign in North Africa
🤣 true I just suspect everything being anti Italian especially Anglo made stuff. They completely undermine us. Duce said this in his 1940 speech. And sadly it’s still relevant they completely ignore our existence.
What makes it even worse is that the character that he’s based on is a two Victorian cross recipient for his actions in North Africa and him being a hell raiser when he was captured. he was famously noted that he refuse any promotion because he doesn’t wanna leave his man behind and promised each of his soldiers they are coming back home. And back in the 80s they finally recognize him for his service during the war by tricking him to go to a talk show and have all the guest members be the family members and the men that he served with.
There's a lot of things about this mission that did stick out to me: 1. The Owen gun. I think the creators did that to establish that these are Australians. It would have been better to either give them a Thompson Sub-machine gun which most of the commonwealth troops were using at the time, or like you said take place in New Guinea in the South Pacific. 2. I could be wrong on this, but I think Hamms called Riggs and his fellow soldiers "rats" because Riggs and his fellow Aussies are part of the 9th Division, famously known as the Rats of Tobruk. But it still doesn't explain why he use it so rudely 3: Hamms as the CO. You are right, in the British Army (also Canada, India, New Zealand and in this case Australia), Majors are in command of a company while Captains are the second in command of said company. However Australian officers from the Division to platoon level, this include companies would be in command, not British. 4: The use of the Gammon Bombs. These are actually real grenades made to explode on impact. However, these things were first used in service in 1943. Two years after of this mission. 5: You can use a heavy machine gun to take down the Stuka, but I guess the player who made the video you are looking over wanted to challenge himself I guess. I mean I even try to take it down with a Panzefaust lol
A major, commanding a company? Is it not the captain's job to command a company, the major's (or lieutenant-colonel's) being to lead an entire battalion?
@@Briselance Different era's different armies different ranking systems. In the United States Army a Company Commander would be an O-3 Captain's slot with the XO being a 1st Lieutenants slot. Likewise a Battalion Commander would be a Lieutenant Colonel's slot and the Battalion XO being a Major O-4s slot. You could still have lower ranks in these positions either due to attrition, time in grade, or lagging paperwork. Other armies structured things differently.
4:45 From what I understand, the protagonist's group was referred to as the "Desert Rats"; that might explain why the British guy was calling them that. That being said, it doesn't explain why he was so hostile to them.
Thank you for sharing the information that Lucas Riggs was actually based off of a New Zealander. I find it quite disrespectful how poorly Call of Duty: Vanguard (2021) represented my country. New Zealand. Just to provide some constructive criticism, the indigenous people of New Zealand, the Maori, are pronounced Mol-Di. Besides that, thank you for acknowledging New Zealand's involvement in World War II (1939-1945), even if it's just a small mention.
3:17 correct me if I’m wrong but surely almost all officers in the SOE would be British? The Australian soldiers in this mission are attached to the SOE, not the regular Australian army, so their commanding officer would likely be British?
No, we looking at platoon level command and that would be a Australian. Not to say Special Operations Executive was secret organization, they employed most agents and not entire companies and SOE agents werent strictly British or even from the Anglesphere, in fact the Norwegian Independent Company 1 was under the leadership of Captain Martin Linge who was a Norwegian actor. If you have a squad entirely composed of Australian troops why on Earth the Squad leader would be British?

8:21 (edit: you got it right) its a Panzer IV* with the Kwk40 but without the sideskirts, you can tell its a panzer IV based on the shape and relative size of the gun mantelet (the part where the gun meets connects with the turret front), panzer IIIs had larger, rounder gun mantelets relative to the size of the turret front. the other thing that gives it away as a Panzer IV rather than a panzer III is the fact it has hull roof crew hatches and the space for them. the 3rd way of telling it is a panzer IV rather than a panzer III is that panzer IIIs had 2 headlights on the lower hull. panzer IV had headlights on the track guard (like the vehicle in the video) [the fact it has only 1 is ok, panzer 4s in musuems and historical photos often have a single headlight) ->the panzer IV did not get the Kwk40 (long 75mm) untill 1942. i disagree that its got a kwk39, the dark makes it harder to tell though. some ways that are less obvious here due to the dark, is; -that the panzer 4 had 8 road wheels vs the panzer III's 6. t -the panzer 4 had leafspring suspension while the panzer 3 had torsion bars -the panzer 4's hull widens out and overhangs the tracks alittle, while the panzer 3 has flat sides. *based on the muzzle break its a panzer IV Ausf. G specifically (rather than the more rounded muzzle break found on Panzer IV F2)
There are so many theaters of WW2 that would be interesting. The east African campaign between the Italians and the allies, the axis invasion of yugoslavia and greece, the battles in Tunisia, hell even the invasion of France.
As an Italian i’m really disappointed. CoD has always been great in portraying war, and recently they are starting to fail to do so. Much like battlefield how’s always been the more realistic games in the rivalry, they are starting to follow their agendas and not history. Vanguard, battlefield 5, battlefield 2042, games ruined by their agendas.
Sometimes I feel like the only game who potrayed Italian soldiers right was Mafia II, and that wasn't even a WWII game! (for context look at the first chapter, US soldiers invade Sicily during Operation Husky, the protagonist takes part of that)
Also notice that in El-Alamein, when you load a 5-bullet magazine into a Lee-Enfield, but if you look carefully at the magazine, you’re loading nothing into the gun, there’s no bullets to be seen
I think the reason we see Panzer IVs here is the same reason we see so much other anachronistic stuff in Vanguard. Much of it is recycled assets from Call of Duty WW2, which takes place from D-Day onwards.
I think I read somewhere that the "Desert Rats" nickname ended up being taken up and used by the Ausies themselves, as well as the brits. But it would have been a friendly nocking banter thing.
It was actually taken by pretty much everyone, the Czechoslovakians, Polish, Australians, the British and pretty much anyone who was on the defending side took that nickname with pride. Which is actually hilarious
as far as im aware the name desert rats was given to the british 7th armoured division with the rats of tobruk being the australian led allied garrison at tobruk
My grandfather was in North Africa as a italian artillery battalion. It's sad to see that in every game they are forgotten. No more than the soldiers of the Brazilian Expeditionary force that fought in Italy
What do you mean that there were ITALIANS in Tobruk? I thought that WW2 was all about USA D-Daying Germany, while Russia rushing into Berlin... Huh... Odd. /s
@@historylegends Wonderful Video as always! As an enthusiast of Italian WW2 History, it made me so sad to see that they didn't show any Italians at Tobruk of all places. It would have been fun playing as the Aussies defending the outer redoubts against the Ariete Armored Division and 8th Bersaglieri Regiment
The entire reason Tobruk was such a dicy situation for the ANZACS was that they got pushed up against the coastline. By setting it in the desert, you completely destroy that critical aspect of the battle, that they literally had no option to retreat, and had to fight to the death in order to survive
16:59 "On this one, Foxhauls in the middle of a FLAT desert landscape. FLAT." 17:06 "On this one you can see, an Australian trench, in a rocky, desert, FLAT landscape." Deleted scene: "And lastly, we have an anime girl with FLAT desert. FLAT landscape, you can see that there's almost no cliff."
Think how cool it would be to have an Italian campaign talking about two brothers who fought together until 8 september 1943(armistice) , then one choose to join the partisans and the enlist in the RSI army.
For the longest time I wanted a war game set in Winter War or Continuation War or even the Lapland War, but seeing how woke these game companies have become, I'm glad we don't get one.
Hey, i spotted a mistake on your part! The british major (while still out of place) isn't in command of an S.O.E force but normal aussie soldiers. This is the story of the aussie soldier before being recruited by the S.O.E.

0:15 oh no.....you just didn't say that.... Okay I believe that, you as an historian know that Simo Häyhä wasn't swedish but by saying that and putting the flag of Sweden on top of him, I hope, only few finnish people watch this video, because you have just commited an act equal to war crime in their books😂😂
Great vid! I was just binging your previous videos and I noticed your Costco card behind your phone on one of those videos. Now, I could never unnotice it. 6:38
18:34 On the top of the map you can see a SA symbol. The SA were a group of thugs that were the paramilitary wing of the nazi party before they took power. The entire organisation was disbanded in 1934 because it was no longer needed by Hitler. So it makes no sense to see it on a Wehrmacht map in 1941. Just another example of historical mistakes in this dumpster fire of a game.
I think they reused the SA Symbol for their fictional wunderwaffe projects within the game. But yeah, petty dumb for them to reuse the SA symbol instead of using the Black Sun symbol
Thanks so much for these videos, you never stretch the video longer than it needs to be. Your videos allow me to learn new things and enjoy them at the same time. I’ve been watching you for about a month now and you’ve improved my history so much. Thanks, from another Canadian.
0:1215:51 just a small correction, Simo Häyhä, or the white death, was actually a Finnish sniper, it shouldn't have bugged me as much as it did, but there it is.
Panzer IV Ausf. G version entered into service 1942 it was improvement over the Ausf. F2 is still not sufficient to provide reliable defence. It is best to shoot first, as the KwK40 L/43 can deal with the majority of enemies it will face. Heavy tanks like the KV 1 or 2
19:24 thanks to your sage advice, I've been able to scare away any and all commandos who keep trying to infiltrate my backyard out in the deserts of West Texas. Thanks, History Legends!
You are right about the vehicles, but that's something that always happens in ww2 CoD games: they copy/paste the same vehicles across all eras. For instance in CoD2 they use (although correctly) the Pz.Kpfw. II Ausf. C as the main battle tank used by the Germans in early war, although it would make more sense to see Pz.Kpfw. III. In other CoD ww2 games everything gets better because they are set late in the war, so you see Panzer IV G and H correctly placed in their timeline, also Panthers, and Königstigers. But yes, Vanguard was possibly the worst CoD I've ever played. Moreover, it doesn't even take a lot of effort to turn that G model into an D or E model: even if it wouldn't be absolutely perfect, they could just swap the cannon model for the short one and that's the only extra work they needed to do (yes, the hull is also different, but still better than placing a G model in 1941). Also Volkssturmgewehr in Africa in 1941 :(.
Loved your German :D - and I absolutely agree on your analysis. This is why I do not play CoD at all (I am more in the direction of Hell Let Loose), it is just irritating to see the wrong weapons, tanks and uniforms...
These days cod would be so great if they would work with guys like historylegends. So we wouldn't have 2 f* up WW2 cod like Vanguard and WW2. Or Cold War which had a lot potential settings and story wise.. but eastern Volkspolizei with MP5's are fine too i guess.
To add Vanguard does even say "alternative history" :D just pointing it out but allot of nitpicky problems can be found. FINISH SNIPER NOT SWEDISH. your title as "historian" went out the window, unless you where being sarcastic but the most rudimentary google search would point that out. You seem to get quiet allot of things wrong for a "historian" British treated allot of their "allied" troops like shit but its a case by case basis. The austrailians at the time where seen like lesser people since they are the offspring's and what not from the convicts that got sent there. Are you really a "historian" or just some arm chair hobbyist making UA-cam videos? "middle of the dessert" still suffices even for a port town since its quiet literally situated in bumfuck nowhere by Western standards. And just beacuse its a port town does not mean it takes place at the beach. Nit picking for the sake of content but i nitpick your commentary for the sake of a comment :) Bur yes high ranking officer for four "rats" its a bit odd and yes they made him to be hated. Something we agree on. As for the uniform here i thought it was just like a ragtag band like they are not recognized as a part of the standing army and could dress in whatever. I guess its to further the point that Australians where treated poorly thus handed outdated equipment.
The tank is a Panzer IV F2, however, that is still anachronistic because production of this model only began in 1942 due to there being tough armor that needed a higher penetrating gun. great video man keep it up!!
Man, i’m italian and i totally agree with your comments on this game, I think it could have a lot of potential; even though I am sixteen, I think I know the story better than the people who programmed the game. However, I have been following you for a while and I have to congratulate you for your very detailed considerations :)
I think the only depiction I've seen of Italian troops in video games was in Battlefield 1 with the Arditi in the Italian mountains fighting the Austro-Hungarians during the first world war
Yeah the ARMIR suffered way too much to be Ignored like they have been. I've been reading a book about them called: "Sacrifice on the Steppe, the Italian Alpine Corps at Stalingrad"

They not just could've taken him as a prisoner for intel, shooting an unarmed, wounded soldier also is a war crime if I'm not mistaken.

I am italian even if my name and surname aren't
You should read the book: the war without hate. It was maked by the german general Erwin rommel who fight with italians during north africa.
The Germans were the major offenders of the war, but they still have their own perspective to be told! I am also disappointed with how arrogant and incompetent the British general was.

There's a lot of things about this mission that did stick out to me:
But it still doesn't explain why he use it so rudely
3: Hamms as the CO.

8:21 (edit: you got it right) its a Panzer IV* with the Kwk40 but without the sideskirts, you can tell its a panzer IV based on the shape and relative size of the gun mantelet (the part where the gun meets connects with the turret front), panzer IIIs had larger, rounder gun mantelets relative to the size of the turret front. the other thing that gives it away as a Panzer IV rather than a panzer III is the fact it has hull roof crew hatches and the space for them.
the 3rd way of telling it is a panzer IV rather than a panzer III is that panzer IIIs had 2 headlights on the lower hull. panzer IV had headlights on the track guard (like the vehicle in the video) [the fact it has only 1 is ok, panzer 4s in musuems and historical photos often have a single headlight)
->the panzer IV did not get the Kwk40 (long 75mm) untill 1942. i disagree that its got a kwk39, the dark makes it harder to tell though.
some ways that are less obvious here due to the dark, is;
-that the panzer 4 had 8 road wheels vs the panzer III's 6. t
-the panzer 4 had leafspring suspension while the panzer 3 had torsion bars
-the panzer 4's hull widens out and overhangs the tracks alittle, while the panzer 3 has flat sides.

To sum it up, the first four operators in Vanguard are loosely based off real heroes, albeit exaggerated.
Medal of Honor Airborne is the only game I've played where I've even seen an Italian in WWII. Haven't played any of the new Cawadoody games though.

Perhaps the devs are unfamiliar with that gun.
Nit picking for the sake of content but i nitpick your commentary for the sake of a comment :)
Bur yes high ranking officer for four "rats" its a bit odd and yes they made him to be hated. Something we agree on. As for the uniform here i thought it was just like a ragtag band like they are not recognized as a part of the standing army and could dress in whatever. I guess its to further the point that Australians where treated poorly thus handed outdated equipment.
Oh also, General George S. Patton 15:59 was an American general, not Canadian.
It’s a joke he’s saying it because of how the game portrays famous soilders
The tank is a Panzer IV F2, however, that is still anachronistic because production of this model only began in 1942 due to there being tough armor that needed a higher penetrating gun. great video man keep it up!!
Man, i’m italian and i totally agree with your comments on this game, I think it could have a lot of potential; even though I am sixteen, I think I know the story better than the people who programmed the game. Anyway, i think your work is amazing, i hope you will read this message, because I will support you as long as I can ❤️🔥❤️🔥❤️🔥

Three VC recipients who are still fighting-fit... damn. :-O
My father knew a guy who survived that battle...there was even a legend that he swam back to Italy after the battle, and he got the nickname of "Tobruk" due to that: it's one of those stories which walks that weird line between myth and self-mockery.
It feels weird that these games of lately: 1) always show the Germans as devils incarnate; 2) never show our armies.
Oh, the Monty Python Officer is a Sergeant Major, which makes this scene bloody hilarious.
0:15 The Swedish?? Isn't he finish (the white death)
The sniper you talk about in the start they wanna make a mission about is not sweden but finish and faugt in the winter war vs Russia...
I'm honestly sick of the "snobby, incompetent British officer" trope, I say that as an American.
Agree.... The shit Brit officers would have been mainly GONE by this point in the war. Now its just boring recycled TV and movie trash from someone that has never done a thing in their life other than consume TV, movies, and Games.

Bruh Simon hayha is a legendary Finnish sniper
19:20 German infantry unit tactics literal revolved around going from a travelling single column, to a spread out line as fast as possible... Thanks Vanguard(!)
German soldier use SVT-41 ( Soviet weapon ) and Japan soldier use STG-44 ( German weapon ) that makes me always smile when playing this COD 😅
