You are correct there are a lot of nice people out and about during the day. But two things: 1. you were nowhere near the bad side of town. That's a section called West Shawmut. 2. come back after dark.
I'm a resident here still. It's still a quiet little town, but more people are moving here as of late. The crime rate isn't that bad as the statistics show. Those streets that you were initially riding around are the mill houses in the mill village. We used to have a cotton mill here that used to be located not far from where you are riding. As far as the Kia plant and the supporting plants, thay do provide folks around here a lot of work. We do have to pay AL and GA tax. If you ride around different parts of Lanett, you will also find very nice homes and parts with a lot of woodland. You were definitely riding around one of the parts that was "rough around the edges" lol.
This is where I grew up and still live, the Kroger you passed is sketchy. I don’t go there alone because people will follow you and sketch you out, but otherwise Valley is a really nice area. It’s a lot calmer than most places, but has its bad parts too. But there’s a ton of poverty like you said. That’s why there’s a pawn shop across from those houses you said were run down. There’s also tons of “check n go” type places in the area. All of those houses used to be really nice because they were mill houses, my grandparents generation grew up in them. But due to poverty they are very run down now whereas they used to be very nice family homes.
Thank you for being HONEST, many people just wont admit their town needs to improve, and how could it when so many dont even want to accept the areas where the town has to be better in. I am 280lbs, and hairy.. the only thing that fallow me around is flies and dogs when i am holding bbq. it's sad how little education most man have, they dont know how to treat a lady.

Florida has priced me and my husband out so we are looking at houses in lanett so thank you for this video to show what its like. South florida is no sunshine either and has ALOT of crime, especially across the railroad. You turn down the wrong street and you could be in trouble. And everyone says not to go to walmart during the night lol so i wonder how this compares.
I grew up in Lanett too. Back when the mills were still going strong I would sit on my granny and pawpaws house on Gilmer Avenue and watch the traffic during shift change. It has changed so much since Lanett mill and others have closed. Homes are run down but I still love the place and I love to go home when I have the chance.

I grew up in lanett..... the run down houses are the mill village.... lanett has a lot of different areas.... some very high dollar and some low dollar. There are maybe 2 rough areas causing those statistics.... the rest of that you see is just low income folks that don’t bother anyone.

Lanett is a very old town. The homes that are not inhabited and are old are more than likely that way because the owner had lived there for many years and died. The mills provided jobs but after they were shut down, people moved on.

I was paying close attention to the street names as you were driving through the neighborhood to see if I could locate where my grandmother's house was. She and her family were living there in the 1920 census so the houses must be older then you were thinking. Her house was at 312 S. 10th Street. My father was born in the house in 1933. My grandmother was a 2nd grade teacher; her father was a carpenter. I spent a lot of time there as I was growing up and until my grandmother died in 2004. My grandmother's house and the houses on her street were well maintained and there was no fear of being in the neighborhood. But that was about 20 years ago. I don't believe that I have been back to Lanett since she died but I have very fond memories of visiting my grandmother. The house burned down after it was sold.
high amount of drug use and property crime. rare for violent crime which is artificialy elevated from people in atlanta dropping bodies off over state lines. i live in huguley which is a suburb in lanett and my parents rent plenty of houses there. the whole area took a massive hit from the mills closing as they ran everything. KIA is only partially helped its economy. its definetly has a good and bad areas tho.

With my parents being landlords and having everyone do background checks we have had people with serious charges from Georgia but when we run their background in Alabama it says they are clean.

Southern states , have more crime because of low wages, and no programs that benefit the working class. If u work full time I don’t think you should be living in poverty. That’s why there’s more job opportunities in democratic states, because democratic policy’s work. Also there’s less crime.
Southern states have more crime because the people religious views affect the laws and enforcement of the laws in those states. Some things illegal in the south are legal in other states, when you compare states your not comparing apples to apples since all states have unique laws, and police forces. I lived in a tourist town where the cops let things slide to keep crime rates down. Now i live in a rural town where cops search you without a warrant to keep drugs out

Google maps got it wrong Bessemer Alabama is the most dangerous the part of Alabama. Maybe they are talking about lil Shawment or West Shawment it’s a bad area but the area ur driving in is not bad it’s pretty peaceful there.

I live in Lanett. It’s not that bad of a place, some areas are rougher than others. I wouldn’t want to live anywhere else.
