You ended the video saying "Thank you for watching". No! I thank you, Alex!!! I like your method because it is a simple, straightforward, no-nonsense approach to mapping out the features which I need to have in my head when painting out a portrait. Often when I begin painting my mind is full of too many ideas or methods and I get confused or forgetful. I just need something simple in my head to remember just when I begin painting and not get bogged down into too many complex rules and regulations.
Yes, I have seen and read other methods similar to yours in painting out the proportions and often I am overloaded as to which method - Loomis method, Bridgman etc. - and often they don't quite explain the method in an easy way to remember. I just love how you packaged the most important information together. Because when I sit down to paint all of a sudden all information goes out the window and I am at a loss. When I find myself sitting down ready to start painting a portrait, I want some fast guide lines now in my head to look for! I just love you put it all in a package that is plain common sense.
I like the information regarding finding the positioin of the bridge of the nose and then calculating the distance from that point to the inner corners of the eyes. Great idea! No one has ever mentioned that little trick! Because others have talked of setting out the eyes and nose triangle but never the bridge of the nose, corner of the eyes triangle. Because I was always at a loss as to how to get the distances mapped out quickly between the eyes and their actual sizes.
My apologies for this long comment but I am glad to stumble upon an artist who actually gives solid no-nonsense approach to getting the basic information down into my head. The first time I discovered you was when you were talking against that stupid approach with the Sight-size method of painting. You saw things the way I see things and talked the way I talk and I like that. Many thanks and very grateful.

Thank you. Glad you've found my videos helpful and my explanations straightforward. Everything I teach can be found in all those old methods you mention. But I find a lot of teachers can be a bit mysterious about what they do.

@@SIMPLIFYDrawingandPainting I'm doing the "Year of Life and Portrait" at the City Lit, though this is something of a refresher for me as I did a foundation course at CASS many years ago.

Thank you. There are loads of good books, but if I had to pick the best I'd say "Alla Prima" by Richard Schmid. Have you heard of him? Unfortunately its a bit expensive at around £100, but IMO its definitely worth it. The other books every representational artist should read are by Harold Speed "the practice and science of drawing" and painting "techniques and materials". Published around 1917, and you'll find them on amazon for about £10 each. I reckon pretty much everything I teach is covered in those books, and then some...
