'astonishingly defenceless' that is such a good description of our native animals
It's a well-known fact that NZ is snake-free. It's also a beautiful country for cross-country hiking so, PLEASE keep NZ free of snakes forever.
Snakes aren’t bad
@@pebblemint1750 Who said snakes are bad? Just keep them out of an ecosystem which has no defence against it and where fine
Yes keep them out while you sit in a meadow and bit you
should show this to australians. for some reason a lot of aussies think we have snakes over here.. in new zealand
No, most Australians know you dont....all of them are here.
@Meerkats and birbs
NZ has just as many introduced species both accidental and deliberate. Snakes are native to Australia....been here longer than the aborigines....dumbass.
VEAKSTA ikr
@Kula Cnt bruh. You have no chill. Go outside.
Lot of Aussies travel to NZ for out door sports, camping, hiking, travelling. NZ is fairly easy to get around once you are out of Auckland and major metro cities. NZ and Australia have some awesome wild life and landscapes. Both countries has their own charms and uniqueness.
Nice video, you should've mentioned as an example what happened to the island of Guam when snakes accidently landed there from a plane cargo and as a result destroyed nearly all of Guam's native bird population.
That sounds really interesting! I didn't know that happened in Guam.
That is true ! I was born , raised & still reside on guam. Brown tree snakes are now everywhere !! We have seen some get longer than 10 feet .
@Mark Tuckey what’s your point? Nevada has one of harshest winters and snakes thrive there. North and South Korea has snakes, weather similar to New Zealand.
@Howick RC car madness Auckland / the top of North Island is sub-tropical.
Thats why I immigrated to NZ from Japan
I can not walk in bush ,forest etc
You are still at risk of wasps, or of vermin of the two-legged kind.
Mate snakes are harmless I had ye second most venomous snake at my feet yesterday and it did nothing respect them they respect u
@@allenbird3652 yeah wasps aren't that big of a deal
@@isaaclegg117 harmless?? Tell that to my neighbours dog that got bitten by a king brown the other week and died. Then it went into someone else back yard where there 3 year old was playing and almost bit her. Till there pet pitbull
Came out and mould and killed the snake but got bitten in the process. The pit bull saved the little girl but unfortunately died an hour later.
@@isaaclegg117 There are species of snakes that are naturally aggressive.
Nothing harmless about snakes.
A small but important point: Zealandia is the continent that broke away from Gondwanaland, and then mostly sank. But it began rising again about 20 million years ago. So, New Zealand is a sunken continent, and not an island. And in the space of the next 50 million years, it will continue rising and possibly quadruple in size as we head for the tropics and the equator!
New Zealand broke off Australia.
And each year its moving towards Australia.
Wow that's REALLY cool! Too bad I will be dead, I would love to see this = (
Jeez, I hope not. Don't want more room for Australians to move to or the US wealthy to buy up as their bolt-hole against their "armageddon".
Wrong
@@danielwoodney8382 Yep agreed. Totally wrong.
I'm a kiwi and I didn't know it was a total prohibition on snakes. I really thought a zoo would have them
Thank you
yep I recall that an application was made to the Muldoon government to bring one to nz for use in some movie said that it was going to be taken out of nz after filming was over and they were told no bloody way don't think that the current government would have the balls to do the same so its only a matter of time
@@tonymartin4255
Actually, New Zealand's animal importation laws have only become more strict with the passage of time. Importing other reptiles and exotic birds became illegal less than 30 years ago.
TONY MARTIN I bet this government would ban all snakes !!!
Ask Florida what happens when you import snakes?
it's a good thing that snakes are prohibited. keep them out and protect our native species.
Yep that’s another reason to love New Zealand 🇳🇿
How snakes are amazing
I love snakes and New Zealand but I don’t want them eating our wild life I’d honestly rather have our native slithery eels then snakes though but I would like too see crocodiles.
Lachlan Bowtell Yes true they are portrayed by humans very harshly I think everything you said is true but I think we should have at the very least some animals I mean sure we have the oldest lizards on the planet but you know it gets old in a while I still love marine species but it would be good too have a land based animal.
Lachlan Bowtell Epic that sounds great I’m also doing something like that I’m grabbing fish and marine reptiles from Hawaii and Aussie.

Saint Patrick, moved to NZ when he retired and banished them there too... allegedly
Saint Fred of Dagg.
Interesting stuff 👍🏼
I've wanted to visit there for a long time, specifically because it's one of the few places where there are no snakes. I want to go and crawl around some large rocks near a cliff, and not have to worry about it.
It's smart if you think about it! In the U.S. alot if exotic pets are released into the wild when owners can't take care of them (mainly snakes) and it screws up the eco system keeping them outlawed is a good idea!!!
That John key photo...
4:25 Loved the fact that a guy popped out in your list of native wildlife population. Lol
Smart guy. Realized that people would want to watch kiwi related videos after this video and conveniently placed such links :)
New Zealand was part of a island called zealandia. All of the island sunk and then millions of years later new zealand popped up also zealandia split off from Australia
Thanks Geko, you're absolutely right about some of New Zealand being submerged and forming from tectonic plates sliding together. I found this website had a great explanation in a bit more detail:

I did not know that (nor that Nfld had no snakes). NZ is my kind of country. What is that distance you indicated with the orange line, between NZ & Aus? Always remember Mum (from Ireland, in London during the war) saying she couldn't stand Aussies but New Zealanders were real gentlemen.

I was told new zealand was too cold for snakes to survive.
@Warned Storm wtf are you on about you aussie bogan. LMAO
@Warned Storm what do you consider as hot??
@Warned Storm pluse I've lived in the south island for a few years it's no way near as hot as it is in Australian. In parts of Australian there winters are hotter then the new zealand summer.
lol cold blooded animals - hibernating// the closest nz would feel strayas heat, would have to be the north island - melbourne's heat 💯..
Warned Storm hottest ever in South Island is 42, it’s not weird to see it get 43, in Victoria

This video applies to any species that hasn't been introduced to NZ before the 1953 Wildlife Act btw.
Easy to go bush walking in NZ. In Australia you have to consider getting to a medical centre within a few minutes.
I lived 60m from a bushwalk at castle hill in Townsville always keeping an eye out for snakes, I encountered an eastern brown (extremely dangerous) one day but it slithered away when it saw me
Its impossible for snakes to live in New Zealand. Way too cold.
They live in England.
@@bremCZ Really?! I thought it would be too cold for them to live there, since they need heat to regulate their body temperature. According to the scientists snakes require 70 and 90 degrees Fahrenheit (21 to 32 degrees Celsius) to function properly. Maybe in the far South of England.
@@wayneshilcock3027 There are snakes all over England. Scotland too.
@@bremCZ Ok then, explain to me the biology of a snake and then explain how that is possible. Given the fact, as I explained before. According to the scientists snakes require 70 and 90 degrees Fahrenheit (21 to 32 degrees Celsius) to function properly
@@wayneshilcock3027 Because not all snakes require the parameters you set to survive.
NZ is cold AF snakes ain't surviving down there lol.
Where is Australia is hot AF.
Wrong south island yes but the north island can get pretty hot
No where near Australian temps is my point. Snakes thrive in tropical humidity or dry deserts.
The odd 30 degrees NZ gets for 1 week of the year is barely enough to sustain them.
@@MTT-ic3ci sorry bro I see what ur getting at now. I love the fact that we don't have snake it one less thing to think about especially with the kids.
There are snakes in England which is as cold as the South Island.
@@bremCZ Different type of cold, though. They would be dead pretty quickly. Many insects die after coming here by accident, too. They only last about a year in our environment. Even the stoats and and ferrets are feeling the pressure that the temperatures here are falling.
good to know that
