Proposed gunshot detection tech brews fear in Seattle

  • Seattle police officers could soon be dispatched to emergency calls through new technology designed to detect gunshots. If approved by the city council, the program would establish the region's “first gunfire detection system.”
Leon Griffin has called Rainier Beach in Seattle home for 30 years and he’s seen a thing or two in that time.
“I’ve seen so much happening here on this corner, I could just about write a book I’ve seen so much damn stuff,” Griffin said.
Soon new tech could assist Griffin's watchful eye and could help by sending police resources where they're needed.
The program was outlined in Mayor Bruce Harrell's 2023-2024 Proposed Budget as a million-dollar investment in a "gunfire detection system," with the goal to "address the increase of gun violence in the city."
“They can try it but it’s hard to say if it’s going to work but the only thing they can do is try,” Griffin said.
While they have yet to announce the company that would be contracted, ShotSpotter holds a patent for the technology and is currently in 125 cities around the country.
The so-called gunshot detection system, developed in the mid-’90s, uses sensors to detect loud noise and through an algorithm, determines if it’s a firearm. From that point, police are dispatched.

Worked in Camden NJ when combined with cctv...it increased police response and criminal apprehension. I don't understand the pushback if its proven tech. Hear shot, see perp running from scene on camera, where they ditched a gun and now you have a case. Knowing these systems are listening and police will be there asap has to also be a deterrent no?

Appreciate the acknowledgement that the System Actually works.
The South Police Precinct is 1 mile from Rainier Beach and will make for better Accountability in that neighborhood.
Thankfully, it's been awhile since we had a shooting at the Rainier Beach Safeway. Hopefully this Tech with CCTV will deter it from happening again.
Why people are against it ... is Just how they think.

Stop releasing repeat violent offenders bank into the streets. Stop enabling drug use and crime-ridden homeless camps that embolden criminals. Institute rent control and property acquisition laws that do more than like the pockets of nimbys while the poor are priced out of their neighborhoods.

The whole WA needs this. Their are few states that been having these installed, but at gas stations too. So when it signal green light , then shooting is occurred . Idk why we don't have this here yet. Knowing tech is mainly born out of Seattle with all it's technology's are base out here in WA state alone .

As someone who writes code for a living, I can say that some technology does have racial biases. It is getting better, but it won't improve if people keep having these reactionary takes on any attempts to address racism.

A big one was a algorithm used to determine the cost of bail. It was fed data that was racially biased, and caused people of color to be unfairly discriminated against.
A more famous/widespread issue has to do with facial recognition technology being more inaccurate when dealing with darker skinned people.
Do you want me to come up with more examples?

    • @JK-co4lz

@@vonhooper6986 ... that's not data being racist... it's data based on a racist justice system, income discrimination, or just the outright truth... statistics and math is not racist.
And the facial recognition tech being racist? Easily fixed by having a more expensive camera, lighting, and software that can process a 3D image. But blame the capitalism for wanting the most performance at the lowest cost and the software to only analyze on a 2D plane.

This is what It comes down to.
I called it. The lawlessness was 4 a purpose. For new technology to watch our behavior. And then, comes the behavioral credit score.
So be it. We as a society has failed the test. Don't complain now.
Harsher laws 4 repeat offenders ND heinous crimes ND consider
Gang members n drug dealers n the cartel as domestic terrorist.
Can't wait to see what comes With the use of drones as policemen eyes.
    Drones chasing runaway vehicles...
Drones flying n detonating on a press of a button to combat terrorism home n abroad.
    This is what we get.
I see why, there is a secret society making the calls bcos we are all too stupid to be really free.
    With chaos, comes order.
    God Bless America!
