- On the eve of the Queen's 90th birthday on Thursday, the next but one king - Prince William - has been speaking to the BBC about his grandmother, his interpretation of "royal duty" and recent criticisms that he is a somewhat "reluctant royal".
The prince also told the BBC's Royal Correspondent Nicholas Witchell about his own ambitions for the monarchy when he finally succeeds to the throne.

I don’t think he and Kate have been work shy but rather focused on family. Considering the upbringing of his father, aunt and uncles and that of he and his brother after losing their mother, he no doubt realizes at this juncture in his life raising strong and confident children is as much a part of his job as being 2nd in line of succession.
I feel the events of the last 18 months have been the catalyst for him showing the leadership that he’s truly capable of. He could not have picked a better partner than Kate.

But before his turn comes, is Prince Charles. One can see that Prince William is a very decent, honest and responsible man, and some of these videos on UA-cam about the Royal Family are deliberately contrived t o totally deceive.

This reminds me of an interview I saw with Prince Charles years ago. Interviewer was asking about Charles chomping at the bit to be King. The Prince looked the reporter dead in his eyes and said, you do realize my MOTHER has to die for me to become King. Crickets...silence....mic drop...puts it all in perspective. Grandma...and Pop are still around and I'm sure William would rather them be alive than to be King.

@@iverkjellkken6569 30 years?! King Charles is 73 and will be 74 one month (November 14th). To reign for 30 years he would have to live to 103 nearly 104. That is almost certainly unlikely to happen. He could reign for 20 to 25 years which depending on the time of year would put him at 93/93-98/99. By then Prince William will be 60-65.

The interviewer is a jerk. Poorly worded questions. I feel like he’s trying to as some rag mag “gotcha” questions. He keeps trying to trip up William and he’s not taking the bait. William is an intelligent young man that knows his destiny and loves his family.

He is going to make a remarkable King! He is extremely kind, genuine and he oozes class. He and Kate make a lovely team and their devotion to their family and each other is sweet and so touching. I had to come and watch Prince William's interview after Harry claimed he is trapped. I do not think his trapped at all, he embraces his position.

I personally don’t see the need to create a whole new currency (British coins & notes) with Charles when realistically he will sadly pass in the next few years (it may be another 10-20 years or more but I just consider the public expense) perhaps if Charles was King surely it would be sensible to put William on the currency praying that nothing happens to William. This interviewer or whoever decided on some of these questions is kind of a jerk. Good for William in not falling into any of those traps; and still answering all of the questions openly. I give all of them credit they are required as royalty to live a life that I wouldn't want.
Britain is lucky to have William and Kate who take life and responsibility seriously and not running away like some people.

It’s quite sad that so much has changed in the last six years since this interview. When this was done he still had his grandparents, the wonderful Queen, the Duke of Edinburgh, & a loving brother. I think this interviewer is trying to ask the “tough” questions to show he’s a serious journalist but he’s coming across as hostile. William’s response is polite, dignified and genuine. He comes across as matured and ready to take the reigns if needed.
I couldn’t agree more! I think William found this a little awkward because he likes a laugh and the interviewer was too serious. Little thought was given into trying to get along with William and striking a balance between serious questions and having a little humour.

I think he is someone who is very much up to a serious conversation about the monarchy as well as a normal, down to earth conversation. He will make an excellent king.
He has such deep voice! Our Prince takes his role very seriously, but it’s not like he’s just sat there. He has an active role in the armed forces, he also has a duty to our country which he is accepting very seriously. Very impressed with our future King

I found the interviewer to be openly rude and a bit illogical. He seemed to be implying that somehow Prince William was taking it easy in some way, but serving the people by flying a rescue helicopter is surely one of the most admirable, selfless and worthy jobs you could think of. Its not any less "Royal" than sitting in committees and opening new buildings etc. Prince William is doing a first rate job. I think he is outstanding.

His questions were tedious, repetitive and at times unnecessary.
I say at that time the tabloids were stating how Catherine and William weren't doing any royal duties as Charles did when he was around Williams age. The gossip was creating drama on how William and Catherine are not taking their royal duties as serious and are just enjoying the luxury without the work. But I saw that the Queen and Charles are allowing Prince William and Catherine to have their first year with George without the stress and obligation on doing royal business. Allowing them that enjoyment with their first child without the fuss and living away from the public having that freedom to work normal jobs as William was doing as a helicopter rescue pilot.
I can’t hear the interviewer. But William doesn’t seem shaken if the guy is rude.

I admire how he is focusing on George as his son and not as his heir and a reminder of his mortality like most Monarchs tend to do.
That in itself will ensure he has a much different relationship with his first born than his father and grandmother did. It’s another example of his modern thinking. Furthermore it ensures his three children will grow up close and supportive of each other.

I think it is the other way around. Prince William is actually moody, and has a bad temper behind the scenes. I have read that he is actually pretty hard to get along with. Prince Harry is actually a much better person than he is. And Harry is nothing like Charles in his thirties. A young Prince Charles would have never left England when his pregnant wife was being harassed by the British media like Prince Harry did. Charles lacks the strength and character Prince Harry has.

As an Australian I never took that much notice of the royal family, but he has made quite an impression on me. I was especially impressed by the fact that he didnt try to dodge any difficult questions and gave sincere and heart warming responses.
