Except us(Indians) everyone is studying Sanskrit. Good point is that the language will survive and become popular like Yoga. At the end people from India will travel abroad to master what once originated from their own country. I appreciate people like Mr Dean Brown to understand and promote the language.
I am a Tamil too but I feel Sanskrit belongs to all Indians since time immemorial. This notion of white aryans chasing down the dark skinned people down south is a myth perpetually used by the British and the intelligentsia to rule India. That this a myth has been proven again and again. So, why this exasperation of drawidians getting bullied by Brahmins and the northerners. The people who want to perpetuate this myth today are mostly the politicians in the south and even the media who think they know best. It is these politicians who are holding the people ack, not he religion or the Brahmins. It is high time that Indians of all stripes acknowledge that we all share a common history

This Aryan-Dravidian is a greatest nonsense myth composed by idiot William Jones and Max Muller to create infighting amongst ourselves. Tamil and Sanksrit are both languages of same soil. There is nothing called Noth or South people here. All have same DNA class. Actually original name of the country was Aryavratha (city of noble people). Then changed to Bharatvarsha(by ruler Bharata), then Hindustan(my mughals) and finally India(by Britishers). Who have rules this nation, have changed its name. Time to reinvent Sanksrit and rename the country to Aryavratha. Our Dharma name is not Hindu, its Arya Dharma, and we all are Arya Putra. Vande Mataram.
Partha Sarathi Regarding the word Arya, I want to say it is confusing and debatable. Many South Indians believe it is a different invading race, many brahmins believe they r descendants of Aryas, and the Allied powers of WWII shiver in the name of Arya. Again there is the believe that Arya means "noble". In pure Sanskrit Arya means "arrived" as an adjective. Some claim "Aryavarta" is India, and others, "North India". On the other hand I want to make the point that it was Hindus only in the whole world who never named their religion. Whenever they mentioned Dharma (not Religion but loosely translated as Duty), they used the phrase "Sanatan Dharma" (Eternal Ways). We now translate Religion as Dharma. So actually we are Sanatandharmis or Sanatanis and our land Sanatanbhumi (The Eternal Land). Please consider this. Please also take into consideration that Bhaarat is derived from the name of a mythical king Bharat. So the name of our religion should be changed from the wrongly pronounced Hindu (Sindhu>Hindu) to Sanatandharma or Sanatan (Noun used as adjective). Then we become Sanatanis (The one with the eternal faith or plainly the eternals) and our land Sanatanbhumi (or the land of the Eternals). One day the whole world will be rightfully Sanatanbhumi, unified in heart, in the belief in One where all believes will have place, including atheism. The conquest will be by winning the hearts of people, not through conquest of land (as done by Mughals), or seas (as done by British) or space (as done by Americans).
I am learning sanskrit....some times when speak it i feel like am talking the language of gods. Each word has specificity, each word is designed very scientifically. when i utter the slokas sometimes i feel like some metaphysical dimension is opening around me. The problem is that Malayalam and Tamil stem from Proto-Dravidian, an ethnolinguistic language with no script since they practiced oral traditions (Kannada and Telugu are slightly more influenced by Sanskrit).

In my language (German) we have a much closer connection to Sanscrit. First all substantives have a gender (die, der,das = female, male, neutre) and what gender have the words in German: world, sun, earth, majesty, arts, music, science, power, strength, force, discipline ? all female ! Second the German language is able to put substantives together. The English language cannot do it likewise. We put Welt (world) and Schmerz (pain) together and get "Weltschmerz" and arrive at a completely new meaning = feeling universal depressing moods. The German language is by far more flexible as we pick up with no problem words from other languages, especially from French. Still, coming back to cosmology, English was chosen by Sri Aurobindo to reveal or open the door to a new chapter or episode of the universal evolution. The episode of the homo sapiens, it was a long episode, is coming to an end and the new being with a new supramental consciousness will take over. So, India is and has been in the spiritual domain always no. 1. The real spiritual and material evolution you can find in "Savitri" by Sri Aurobindo, written in a mode of English which has a supreme level (never have been achieved ever before)
I am born in Tübingen,where a specific dialect is spoken. I moved to Jena, Koblenz, Wuerzburg, Bonn, München and Berlin. The German language is taught in all places in the same way. So the older dialects never had any influence on the unified German language, especially on German literature, which was build up and unified first by Luther ( a bit earlier than 18th century) and brought to the highest level by v. Goethe and later by the romanic poets Kleist, Hölderlin - even by Nietzsche, Thomas Mann - manifested best in their poems. Why should todays German be artificial? Grammar has not changed. Spelling has been simplified yes. But what are the artificial elements ? As I remarked two characteristics are outstanding. The gender specification and the use to put substantives( in which language is there something similar)? Last not least the German language is far more open to new impulses coming from modern Russian, French and English. We invented the word "handy" for mobile and the word "showmaster", both words never used in English.
Sanskrit has died in north india over the years by converting to prakrits and then modern indo aryan languages(with heavy persian and arabic influence). The islamic rule totally wiped the language off. Only in south indian languages (eg. malayalam) it is still preserved a lot. Tamil is an exception

Sanskrit is the mother of all European Languages… which shows civilisation is an “OUT OF INDIA” phenomenon. Chris Rob People who closely follow and do sadhana based on the Vedas see the proto-European language theory as a theory originating from Eurocentric thinking during the Colonial days. The Vedas see Sanskrit as an eternal language. Basically Europeans and Americans (I'm one myself!) see our culture as being the pinnacle of 'evolution', but Veda sees us as a little blip in time - some ruffians that killed billions of cows, and more. "Searching for Vedic India" book by Devamrita Swami has some good info in this regard.
Linguistics comes from Sanskrit. The first literature on grammar in the world were made in Sanskrit over 2500 years ago and it is still relevant today as Backus-Naur Form. That is why sanskrit is often termed as "mother of all languages" because it was the first to discuss and posit nouns, adverbs, verbs, adjectives, phonemes, morphemes, phonetics, etymology, morphology. All the things a language needs now and what we learn in school now. Thus proper credit should be given and not ignored.

Thank you Dr. Brown for writing a book on the Upanishads. Thank you Jeffrey Mishlove for recording it, your own knowledge seem to be very commendable indeed. There is a mention of Upanishads and its relevance to science here. The ancient hindu sages have thought a lot about the cosmos or manifest universe and came to the conclusion that it has to be INFINITE. No other explanation of finite and closed system can provide any conclusion to the debate to the contentious question of the srishti or creation. At first look it may appear some what an escapist excuse to pronounce the srishti as infinite and be done with it. But then the alternative explanations are all highly inadequate and hence they settled for this dimension of ANANTH or infinite. If someone say the universe is finite then pat comes the question, what is there outside of the uni or multiverse? Simialrly if some one says TIME began some 13.5 billion years ago, pat comes the question, what was there before 13.5 billion years ago. Now, having determined that the srishti or manifest creation is infinite they could not make creator any smaller. Beacuase if the creator god is smaller, then he can not control this infinite srishti and paradoxically and ruefully he will be controlled by the srishti in turn. So what to do. They said the creator god , BRAHMAN is also infinite and this manifest creation is only a small fraction of his creation. Now, everything falls in place and everyone is content. Vedas, from whom Upanishads were derived are treasure troves of wisdom. Please read the Upanishads, get them from libraries or on amazon. Thanks.
Just a few point 1) Sanskrit is called as the "Deva Bhasha" (Language of the GOD). Even for a trained Indian tongue it takes at-least 10 years to learn the exact pronunciation patterns and rules. Coz, you have to regulate and modulate the frequency by your vocal cord. 2) Not just the world but the entire Universe and also beyond Universe (this is a bit tough to visualize for the westerner mind) is just a combination of numerous vibrations of differing frequency. These Sanskrit verses are a frequency transformer. The chanter, upon regular chanting with devotion (Devotion = increased concentration) gradually changes his body vibration from gross materialistic to spirituality. With regular practice it metamorphose you into a higher spiritual plain (body, mind and all your presence).

I'm glad to choose Sanskrit as second language in my 9th & 10th class. I was able to learn hindi myself so I chose to learn new language. And now I know total 5 language correctly.

If you are really watching videos on linguistics you should have already known that you can't justify Sanskrit words (a vast and rich language) by using English (an Over simplified language with lot of errors)

There are many schools and Sanskrit universities in India and also in other countries.I am learning it from an on line school. It is an easy language to learn and has many benefits due to his everything is pronounced.

Sanskrit, the language is a treasure trove in itself. An ancient language that holds immense amount of wisdom, scientific and metaphysical realities intertwined with each other, so much intuition - what else remains after this ? A pure consciousness is the creator, whether it is god or anything else is a matter of debate, but this theology is very human, this perception of the cosmos is sheer wisdom. Sanskrit is actually a sophisticated form meant for writing of scriptures and mantras. The coloquial counterparts are Prakrit. Saanskritik(Traditional)> Sanskrit, Praakritik(Natural)> Prakrit. We see such cases in many other languages. Especially in Literature studies.

Lovely, Sanskrit learning will enhance one's brains development. The reason why it has died out in India was due to the fact that the teaching of the vedas was not taught to every Indian, only the brahmins and few others kept it to themselves. The beauty of Sanskrit language: Vocabulary is infinite. There are meaning associated with every alphabet or we can also call it vibration and you can split a word in to its basic vibrations and derive the meaning. These alphabets are designed in tune with vibration of the cosmos and hence Sankrit mantras have tremendous power. You repeat a mantra (destined for a purpose) focusing to improve a situation or illness and you can see the result yourself. We can measure the vibration of one's aura ( or the bioplasmic body) when we call a person a name and determine which name would be more appropriate in expanding his/her consciousness. For every word there is vachyarth ( verbal or logical meaning) and bhavarth (emotional or creative meaning). The language is powerful to express meanings in very precise way. In English we say love but in Sanskit there are hundreds of words to express love- love of an elder towards an young, love of a mother, love between partners, love or devotion to God, extreme feeling of love as bliss etc. A two line sloka from a vedic text when translated in other languages becomes as essay that span across many pages. Sanskit is based on communication using feelings so one should comprehend both vacharth and bhavarh to comprehend the meaning. The ability to comprehend the bhavarth is up to the stage you have evolved your consciousness. Each time you read a sloka, you come to know more dimensions of its bhavarth. It is essential to be in the level of consciousness of an author to truly appreciate and understand his writings. Hence it is important to learn this language to truly understand the old texts in its original form, vedas and the science of physics, quantum physics, mathematics, astrology, astronomy, Ayurveda ( medicine) the philosophy, culture, tradition and millions of scriptures since time before time. We talk in Sanskrit with a slang which is in accordance with the vibration of the words. We should learn it to reap its benefits. In ancient India there was no religion and all was based on Dharma which is a way of thinking of what is most appropriate for one to do provided a situation and this is based on basic understanding that you do not do some thing to others which you do not do to yourself, an act done with pure intention in mind for the upliftment of the other is Dharma. One always raises questions to his own self on whether each thought, word or action he/she does is Dharma. Sanskrit is purely secular and expresses the ideology of a civilized society as this itself is one of the word meaning of Sanskit ( "Civilized"). We forgot our civilization and culture and it is time to remind ourselves who we were, what we are n how we want to be.
I grew up in TamilNadu in the 80's, Hindi was very very rare and completely ignored as it did not mean anything. Sanskrit was non existent or limited to fee temples around where a Tamil brahmin priest (with or without understanding) chants sanskrit mantras. I still see it that way... Tamil for regular communication, Hindi (to watch some movies) and Sanskrit in the temples.

Luckily almost all western languages derive from the same proto-IndoEuropean language as sanskrit. I'm a south Slav (Croatian) and I'm always fascinated how simmilar and familliar some sanskrit words sound to me. There is a strong connection between the West and India, we influence eachother over and over again throughout millenias.

The Upanishad s hymn he talks about has a stirring memory for me - it was the favorite of my language teacher and she had a beautiful voice. It also defines infinity to mathematically inclined. He did not translate it well, Ishopanishad is what I would search if I were you.
By the way, appreciating a language like Sanskrit, does not mean any other language is inferior. Every language has its beauty and there is always a comfort and nostalgia in speaking, listening in your mother tongue. In India we teach Hindi, English and the official language of that specific state as primary languages. We should add Sanskrit also to this list to truly appreciate our culture and philosophy and expand the vocabulary which is used in common across Indian languages. May Sanskit be a unifying factor to appreciate our common culture and inheritance as a civilization. We should uphold the commonality to remind us of our oneness. Sanskrit is not the eldest or the brother it like all other languages is the off spring of the mother Greek language. Every word in Greek has a meaning, example you can not call a "cloud" a "car" in English, Sanskrit and all other languages the word "mother" only has the meaning that was attached to it, if "bar" was attached instead of "mother" then we would be calling our moms "bar" but in Greek you cant do that because every word has meaning, "mother" "miter" comes from Eve the first mother and just like Eve was made without earth the word miter means mi=without ter=earth. I'm a Psychology student and like hindu culture. While reading the Bhagavad-Gita and learning about Advaita Vedanta and other ideas, it really seemed to me like an "ancient Psychology", because of its understanding of our spiritual and psychological natures. Now that he mentioned how Sanskrit is so precise in describing consciousness and mind etc., it really makes sense to me.
A lot of text has been lost but still reading something from 5-7 thousand years back and still having such incredible information is just other wordly , people misrepresent them as Religious texts but for me they feel like encyclopaedia , a way of life
Learning Sanskrit while staying in the Western world is very appreciated. To understand Sanskrit you have to be an Indian and stay in India. Anyway, a great beginning. Just one point - Sanskrit is the language through which one may learn our scriptures and the pronunciation is very important. That's why I have emphasized about being an Indian or staying in India. Using the Shalokas with Western dialect will lead to 'nowhere'🙏🙏
I am surprised by some of the angry reactions here as although there are mistakes here and there the essence seems to be well understood and the central point that Sanskrit has its roots in a culture that also influenced 'Western language and culture'. One criticism seems to be that he thinks European languages come from India but he does say right at the beginning that Sanskrit comes from 'proto-Indo-european language' as do many ''English, Russian , French ,Greek'' (the first three indirectly). There are a couple of mistakes not long after that for instance "many, many words in the English languages have Sanskrit origins or origins that are traceable to the Sanskrit tradition and the earlier proto-european language" (it's a mistake but it is clear that they understand that there is an earlier language from which both European language and Sanskrit derive. It is made clearer still by the fact they talks just before about Buddhism going from Western culture to the East). There where many different tribes as some of you say with a probable epi-centre around the Baltic (the earliest evidence of homo-sapiens is not far away in Romania about 40,000 years ago). So he is not saying that European languages derived from Sanskrit but that they both have their roots in a mother tongue (not known). Sanskrit is probably the closest language to that mother tongue (that is known about) apart from the Hittite language. The term Aryan relating to the modern name Iran originally was a term that simply referred to the people of that area (and later came to mean noble) by the time these peoples arrived in Iran their language had changed into what is now termed Indo-Iraninan, it then entered into India in several forms as it was un-codified so there where regional dialects. The Rg Veda was written in Vedic sanskrit which was then supplanted by the formalised classical sanskrit organised by Panini who apart from other changes assorted some pre-extant Indian words (elephant for example). There is also a criticism of his pronunciation of Sanskrit which is forgivable but I am unclear which of his translations are completely wrong? nmg70nmg it would be great to chat those through if you're up for it? Someone else comments that Buddha was born in Nepal not India which is correct although again the area was probably not called Nepal but was again more of a region of principalities first occupied by the Tibeto-Burmese about 2,500 years ago. The area is first referred to in the Atharaveda Parisista which was composed considerably later than the veda(1200-1000 BCE) on which it expounds (disliked by Buddhist and Jains in some of the scriptures). At the time Lumbini was what in what which really was a conglomeration of kingdoms and principalities. It was not until the time of the third Mauryan Emperor Ashoka's reign that we can see a unified 'India' which at the time would have included Lumbini (prior to which Kalinga remained separate - it was said to be the bloody war on the plains of Kalinga that converted Ashoka to non violence and Buddhism). Anyway although yes it is more accurate to say Nepal it is not as straight forwards and a forgivable convenience to use the term India which again was not the name of the region even at the time of Ashoka. I liked Omondi Akura comments ''when we talk about ancient India what we are referring to is not the current geographical boundaries but the ancient geographical and cultural boundaries together.'' One of the comments was very unpleasant about the Indian culture I suppose this is a 'Troll'? Luckily the gaping holes in the arguments (and the careless way in which it was written) mean that it undermines itself. I understand that looking at some of the degeneration of Indian culture such as the caste system, bad hygiene and abject poverty may give a bad impression but anatomy, astronomy and mathematics (what would we do without the zero?) such as we use in the West originated in India. In India written language is traceable at least 4,500 years and it is likely that India was the first place to invent the plough. A look at the incredible architectural achievements and advanced metal work of the country out surpasses most of what was being created in Europe at the time. Part of the difficulty India has has been created by aggressive raids on the country not east by the Brits (I am a Brit and love this land and our culture but this is an undeniable fact of our past). Not only that in many areas again India is on the rise if you look at large parts of Indian history it has been down only to get up and become again a major inspiration in science, craft and culture. Sanskrit was ruined for me because of a terrible teacher I had back in school. Here in India, we CBSE students have to choose between Sanskrit and French after fourth standard as a third language. I found it odd that students of French could introduce themselves in French after only a month of studying it, while none of us ever understood even a little of the Sanskrit syntax. Although our teacher was capable of teaching well, she was simply unwilling to explain topics to us and was always very grumpy. Easily, the worst teacher I have ever had.

No. Sanskrit unfortunately is a mumbled language : it is beautiful only when religious people chant it and make a special effort to refine it. The most frequent vowel is schwa (a as in about or beggar, or u as in undo or o as in wagon ) which gives it a "grey" quality not unlike English. O is like British o in pole and e like British e in grey. Shakespearean English is very mystical but common English never was even during Shakespeare's time. Same thing for Sanskrit.

I am a native Tamil speaker and well versed in English. Recently I got surprised by the amount of hidden knowledge that Sanskrit can offer. Many of the western scientists were Sanskrit scholars ex: Schrödinger, Bohr, Heisenberg, Oppenheimer, Fibonacci etc took knowledge and inspiration from Sanskrit.

The interviewer mentioned about Brahman around 12:33, and then at 12:54, called it the Supreme deity...Just to clarify here, Brahman is not known as a deity. We don't worship Brahman simply because normal human beings cannot communicate with Brahman like the other deities. Now as for the Supreme DEITY, there is Lord Brahma who is the God of creation, meaning the creator of all that is living. There is a very big difference between Brahma and Brahman...Where Brahman is indeed the very essence of the universe, the omnipotent "entity" that is present within every human soul, the "Atman", thereby making us humans being tied with Brahman via our souls. This is how the Buddha came to be known as the enlightened, awakened one, because he realized his self as one with the Supreme One, the Brahman. According to the Upanishads, the Brahman is known as the ultimate reality of all existence. Very interesting talk! Agreed the ancient Indian thoughts were original, scientific and very rich. Someone mentioned 11th century of the start of decline, if I understand thats when the Islamic invasion of India started when we saw the destruction and decline of the great Hindus, Buddhists and Sanskrit languages and cultures. Interestingly around that time, many of the Buddhists texts and great scholars from the great universities such as Nalanda found refuge in Tibet under the patronage of the Tibetan kings that many of the ancient texts were carefully translated into Tibetans and given top proirity (i.e. akin to Tibetan project of the US sending first human to moon -:)) that would otherwise been lost in India. The Tibetan spiritual traditions and philosophy which is spreading around the world now by great teachers like the Dalai Lama, has direct source to the Nalanda Indian thoughts. If you listen to Dalai Lama who always gives great credit to ancient Indian thoughts and admirer of that tradition. He starts most of his Buddhist teachings by recitation of Heart Sutra from many traditions and will start off with Sanskrit renditioin.
He pronounced 0:32 _"योग सुत्र/Yoga Sutra"_ & 2:38 _"वेद/Veda"_ perfectly. Sadly even Indians don't appear to pronounce it proper as many Indians will either pronounce it as "योग् सुत्र" or "योगा सुत्रा" & "वेद्" or "वेदा".
I'm from Keralam. In Southern India, in my opinion, we generally use the original Sanskrit pronunciation. Like Sa'm'skrtam (संस्कृतम्) instead Sa'n'skrit, Pra'jna' (प्रज्ञ) instead of Pra'gya', Jnana/Jnanam (ज्ञान) instead of Gyaan, etc. 🙏
@@slomojohnjoshi5990 Thanks for the info. In Maharashtra we too don't pronounce words like प्रज्ञा or ज्ञान with "G/ग" but we use "D/द" instead which is probably unique to us. Then for संस्कृत we pronounce ऋ in कृ as "ru" instead of "ri", also in pronunciation of सं we don't pronounce it as सन् or सम् but simply add nasalisation to it like "Sã" which I think is the original use of the "ं" (anusvāra) symbol.

They both come from the same parent language. So, they are highly related, and Sanskrit words are eerily similar to English (by way of Latin descent) words. Examples: dwar-door, brata-brother, divya-divine, ashwa-equia (horses), yog-yoke, etc etc.
Except us(Indians) everyone is studying Sanskrit. Good point is that the language will survive and become popular like Yoga. At the end people from India will travel abroad to master what once originated from their own country. I appreciate people like Mr Dean Brown to understand and promote the language.

Many South Indians believe it is a different invading race, many brahmins believe they r descendants of Aryas, and the Allied powers of WWII shiver in the name of Arya. Again there is the believe that Arya means "noble". In pure Sanskrit Arya means "arrived" as an adjective. Some claim "Aryavarta" is India, and others, "North India". On the other hand I want to make the point that it was Hindus only in the whole world who never named their religion. Whenever they mentioned Dharma (not Religion but loosely translated as Duty), they used the phrase "Sanatan Dharma" (Eternal Ways). We now translate Religion as Dharma. So actually we are Sanatandharmis or Sanatanis and our land Sanatanbhumi (The Eternal Land). Please consider this. Please also take into consideration that Bhaarat is derived from the name of a mythical king Bharat. So the name of our religion should be changed from the wrongly pronounced Hindu (Sindhu>Hindu) to Sanatandharma or Sanatan (Noun used as adjective). Then we become Sanatanis (The one with the eternal faith or plainly the eternals) and our land Sanatanbhumi (or the land of the Eternals). One day the whole world will be rightfully Sanatanbhumi, unified in heart, in the belief in One where all believes will have place, including atheism. The conquest will be by winning the hearts of people, not through conquest of land (as done by Mughals), or seas (as done by British) or space (as done by Americans).

@@Grilledburger99Marathi and “Hindu” as you’ve so eloquently mentioned stem from the Devanagari script which came from the Nagari script that originates from the Gupta Script, the Rigveda (3,500 years old) was written in Sharada and Devanagari scripts. The problem is that Malayalam and Tamil stem from Proto-Dravidian, an ethnolinguistic language with no script since they practiced oral traditions (Kannada and Telugu are slightly more influenced by Sanskrit).

+ajaykumar sandula There is a small problem. We get here truth in a language which is grey and to my humble opinion still full of emotions with stupid feelings of superiority. In my language (German) we have a much closer connection to Sanscrit. First all substantives have a gender (die, der,das = female, male, neutre) and what gender have the words in German:
world, sun, earth, majesty, arts, music, science, power, strength, force, discipline ? all female !
Second the German language is able to put substantives together. The English language cannot do it likewise. We put Welt (world) and Schmerz (pain) together and get "Weltschmerz" and arrive at a completely new meaning = feeling universal depressing moods. The German language is by far more flexible as we pick up with no problem words from other languages, especially from French.
Still, coming back to cosmology, English was chosen by Sri Aurobindo to reveal or open the door to a new chapter or episode of the universal evolution. The episode of the homo sapiens, it was a long episode, is coming to an end and the new being with a new supramental consciousness will take over. So, India is and has been in the spiritual domain always no. 1.
The real spiritual and material evolution you can find in "Savitri" by Sri Aurobindo, written in a mode of English which has a supreme level (never have been achieved ever before)
I am born in Tübingen,where a specific dialect is spoken. I moved to Jena, Koblenz, Wuerzburg, Bonn, München and Berlin. The German language is taught in all places in the same way. So the older dialects never had any influence on the unified German language, especially on German literature, which was build up and unified first by Luther ( a bit earlier than 18th century) and brought to the highest level by v. Goethe and later by the romanic poets Kleist, Hölderlin - even by Nietzsche, Thomas Mann - manifested best in their poems.
Why should todays German be artificial? Grammar has not changed. Spelling has been simplified yes. But what are the artificial elements ?

Last not least the German language is far more open to new impulses coming from modern Russian, French and English. We invented the word "handy" for mobile and the word "showmaster", both words never used in English.

Sanskrit has died in north india over the years by converting to prakrits and then modern indo aryan languages(with heavy persian and arabic influence). The islamic rule totally wiped the language off. Only in south indian languages (eg. malayalam) it is still preserved a lot. Tamil is an exception

Sanskrit is the mother of all European Languages… which shows civilisation is an “OUT OF INDIA” phenomenon. The Vedas see Sanskrit as an eternal language. Linguistics comes from Sanskrit. The first literature on grammar in the world were made in Sanskrit over 2500 years ago and it is still relevant today as Backus-Naur Form.
That is why sanskrit is often termed as "mother of all languages" because it was the first to discuss and posit nouns, adverbs, verbs, adjectives, phonemes, morphemes, phonetics, etymology, morphology. All the things a language needs now and what we learn in school now. Thus proper credit should be given and not ignored.

There is a mention of Upanishads and its relevance to science here. The ancient hindu sages have thought a lot about the cosmos or manifest universe and came to the conclusion that it has to be INFINITE. No other explanation of finite and closed system can provide any conclusion to the debate to the contentious question of the srishti or creation. At first look it may appear some what an escapist excuse to pronounce the srishti as infinite and be done with it. But then the alternative explanations are all highly inadequate and hence they settled for this dimension of ANANTH or infinite. If someone say the universe is finite then pat comes the question, what is there outside of the uni or multiverse? Simialrly if some one says TIME began some 13.5 billion years ago, pat comes the question, what was there before 13.5 billion years ago.
Now, having determined that the srishti or manifest creation is infinite they could not make creator any smaller. Beacuase if the creator god is smaller, then he can not control this infinite srishti and paradoxically and ruefully he will be controlled by the srishti in turn. So what to do. They said the creator god , BRAHMAN is also infinite and this manifest creation is only a small fraction of his creation. Now, everything falls in place and everyone is content.
Vedas, from whom Upanishads were derived are treasure troves of wisdom. Please read the Upanishads, get them from libraries or on amazon. Thanks.

Just a few point
1) Sanskrit is called as the "Deva Bhasha" (Language of the GOD). Even for a trained Indian tongue it takes at-least 10 years to learn the exact pronunciation patterns and rules. Coz, you have to regulate and modulate the frequency by your vocal cord.
2) Not just the world but the entire Universe and also beyond Universe (this is a bit tough to visualize for the westerner mind) is just a combination of numerous vibrations of differing frequency. These Sanskrit verses are a frequency transformer. The chanter, upon regular chanting with devotion (Devotion = increased concentration) gradually changes his body vibration from gross materialistic to spirituality. With regular practice it metamorphose you into a higher spiritual plain (body, mind and all your presence).

I'm glad to choose Sanskrit as second language in my 9th & 10th class. I was able to learn hindi myself so I chose to learn new language. And now I know total 5 language correctly.
Hindi, Khortha, Sanskrit and English now I'm learning Gujarati and Telugu.

If you are really watching videos on linguistics you should have already known that you can't justify Sanskrit words (a vast and rich language) by using English (an Over simplified language with lot of errors)

Sanskrit, the language is a treasure trove in itself. An ancient language that holds immense amount of wisdom, scientific and metaphysical realities intertwined with each other, so much intuition - what else remains after this ? A pure consciousness is the creator, whether it is god or anything else is a matter of debate, but this theology is very human, this perception of the cosmos is sheer wisdom. Brahman and Atman alignment works in sync creating and recreating the universe again and again ! 🙏
Sanskrit is actually a sophisticated form meant for writing of scriptures and mantras. The coloquial counterparts are Prakrit. Saanskritik(Traditional)> Sanskrit, Praakritik(Natural)> Prakrit. We see such cases in many other languages. Especially in Literature studies.
I am from Poland and our Langauge including other Eastern,Western and southern Slavic languages have roots in Sanskrit.I started to Study Indology in my city's university but i came to know that was less Indology but more German-Brits colonial mindset Indology.Infact i can chant "Svasti Vachan".I came once India in Rishikesh.😊

Lovely, Sanskrit learning will enhance one's brains development. The reason why it has died out in India was due to the fact that the teaching of the vedas was not taught to every Indian, only the brahmins and few others kept it to themselves. If Sanskrit along with the vedas were taught like the bible , koran and dharmapada to all , it would be the strongest and most pratical method of living...
The beauty of Sanskrit language: Vocabulary is infinite. There are meaning associated with every alphabet or we can also call it vibration and you can split a word in to its basic vibrations and derive the meaning. These alphabets are designed in tune with vibration of the cosmos and hence Sankrit mantras have tremendous power. You repeat a mantra (destined for a purpose) focusing to improve a situation or illness and you can see the result yourself. We can measure the vibration of one's aura ( or the bioplasmic body) when we call a person a name and determine which name would be more appropriate in expanding his/her consciousness. For every word there is vachyarth ( verbal or logical meaning) and bhavarth (emotional or creative meaning). The language is powerful to express meanings in very precise way. In English we say love but in Sanskit there are hundreds of words to express love- love of an elder towards an young, love of a mother, love between partners, love or devotion to God, extreme feeling of love as bliss etc. A two line sloka from a vedic text when translated in other languages becomes as essay that span across many pages. Sanskit is based on communication using feelings so one should comprehend both vacharth and bhavarh to comprehend the meaning. The ability to comprehend the bhavarth is up to the stage you have evolved your consciousness. Each time you read a sloka, you come to know more dimensions of its bhavarth. It is essential to be in the level of consciousness of an author to truly appreciate and understand his writings. Hence it is important to learn this language to truly understand the old texts in its original form, vedas and the science of physics, quantum physics, mathematics, astrology, astronomy, Ayurveda ( medicine) the philosophy, culture, tradition and millions of scriptures since time before time. We talk in Sanskrit with a slang which is in accordance with the vibration of the words. We should learn it to reap its benefits. In ancient India there was no religion and all was based on Dharma which is a way of thinking of what is most appropriate for one to do provided a situation and this is based on basic understanding that you do not do some thing to others which you do not do to yourself, an act done with pure intention in mind for the upliftment of the other is Dharma. One always raises questions to his own self on whether each thought, word or action he/she does is Dharma. Sanskrit is purely secular and expresses the ideology of a civilized society as this itself is one of the word meaning of Sanskit ( "Civilized"). We forgot our civilization and culture and it is time to remind ourselves who we were, what we are n how we want to be.
I grew up in TamilNadu in the 80's, Hindi was very very rare and completely ignored as it did not mean anything. Sanskrit was non existent or limited to fee temples around where a Tamil brahmin priest (with or without understanding) chants sanskrit mantras. I still see it that way... Tamil for regular communication, Hindi (to watch some movies) and Sanskrit in the temples.

I'm a south Slav (Croatian) and I'm always fascinated how simmilar and familliar some sanskrit words sound to me. There is a strong connection between the West and India, we influence eachother over and over again throughout millenias.

The Upanishad s hymn he talks about has a stirring memory for me - it was the favorite of my language teacher and she had a beautiful voice. It also defines infinity to mathematically inclined. He did not translate it well, Ishopanishad is what I would search if I were you.
By the way, appreciating a language like Sanskrit, does not mean any other language is inferior. Every language has its beauty and there is always a comfort and nostalgia in speaking, listening in your mother tongue. In India we teach Hindi, English and the official language of that specific state as primary languages. We should add Sanskrit also to this list to truly appreciate our culture and philosophy and expand the vocabulary which is used in common across Indian languages. May Sanskit be a unifying factor to appreciate our common culture and inheritance as a civilization. We should uphold the commonality to remind us of our oneness. I'm a Psychology student and like hindu culture. While reading the Bhagavad-Gita and learning about Advaita Vedanta and other ideas, it really seemed to me like an "ancient Psychology", because of its understanding of our spiritual and psychological natures. Now that he mentioned how Sanskrit is so precise in describing consciousness and mind etc., it really makes sense to me.
A lot of text has been lost but still reading something from 5-7 thousand years back and still having such incredible information is just other wordly , people misrepresent them as Religious texts but for me they feel like encyclopaedia , a way of life

Learning Sanskrit while staying in the Western world is very appreciated. To understand Sanskrit you have to be an Indian and stay in India. Anyway, a great beginning. Just one point - Sanskrit is the language through which one may learn our scriptures and the pronunciation is very important. That's why I have emphasized about being an Indian or staying in India. Instead of promoting Sanskrit our government is promoting Hindi.
I am surprised by some of the angry reactions here as although there are mistakes here and there the essence seems to be well understood and the central point that Sanskrit has its roots in a culture that also influenced 'Western language and culture'. One criticism seems to be that he thinks European languages come from India but he does say right at the beginning that Sanskrit comes from 'proto-Indo-european language' as do many ''English, Russian , French ,Greek'' (the first three indirectly). There are a couple of mistakes not long after that for instance "many, many words in the English languages have Sanskrit origins or origins that are traceable to the Sanskrit tradition and the earlier proto-european language" (it's a mistake but it is clear that they understand that there is an earlier language from which both European language and Sanskrit derive. It is made clearer still by the fact they talks just before about Buddhism going from Western culture to the East).
There where many different tribes as some of you say with a probable epi-centre around the Baltic (the earliest evidence of homo-sapiens is not far away in Romania about 40,000 years ago). So he is not saying that European languages derived from Sanskrit but that they both have their roots in a mother tongue (not known). Sanskrit is probably the closest language to that mother tongue (that is known about) apart from the Hittite language. The term Aryan relating to the modern name Iran originally was a term that simply referred to the people of that area (and later came to mean noble) by the time these peoples arrived in Iran their language had changed into what is now termed Indo-Iraninan, it then entered into India in several forms as it was un-codified so there where regional dialects. The Rg Veda was written in Vedic sanskrit which was then supplanted by the formalised classical sanskrit organised by Panini who apart from other changes assorted some pre-extant Indian words (elephant for example).
There is also a criticism of his pronunciation of Sanskrit which is forgivable but I am unclear which of his translations are completely wrong? nmg70nmg it would be great to chat those through if you're up for it?
Someone else comments that Buddha was born in Nepal not India which is correct although again the area was probably not called Nepal but was again more of a region of principalities first occupied by the Tibeto-Burmese about 2,500 years ago. The area is first referred to in the Atharaveda Parisista which was composed considerably later than the veda(1200-1000 BCE) on which it expounds (disliked by Buddhist and Jains in some of the scriptures). At the time Lumbini was what in what which really was a conglomeration of kingdoms and principalities. It was not until the time of the third Mauryan Emperor Ashoka's reign that we can see a unified 'India' which at the time would have included Lumbini (prior to which Kalinga remained separate - it was said to be the bloody war on the plains of Kalinga that converted Ashoka to non violence and Buddhism). Anyway although yes it is more accurate to say Nepal it is not as straight forwards and a forgivable convenience to use the term India which again was not the name of the region even at the time of Ashoka.

One of the comments was very unpleasant about the Indian culture I suppose this is a 'Troll'? Luckily the gaping holes in the arguments (and the careless way in which it was written) mean that it undermines itself. I understand that looking at some of the degeneration of Indian culture such as the caste system, bad hygiene and abject poverty may give a bad impression but anatomy, astronomy and mathematics (what would we do without the zero?) such as we use in the West originated in India. In India written language is traceable at least 4,500 years and it is likely that India was the first place to invent the plough. A look at the incredible architectural achievements and advanced metal work of the country out surpasses most of what was being created in Europe at the time. Part of the difficulty India has has been created by aggressive raids on the country not east by the Brits (I am a Brit and love this land and our culture but this is an undeniable fact of our past). Not only that in many areas again India is on the rise if you look at large parts of Indian history it has been down only to get up and become again a major inspiration in science, craft and culture.

Coming from a completely different tradition the man here is more knowledgable of vedanta and devouted to it than many many indians today. Sanskrit was ruined for me because of a terrible teacher I had back in school. Here in India, we CBSE students have to choose between Sanskrit and French after fourth standard as a third language. I found it odd that students of French could introduce themselves in French after only a month of studying it, while none of us ever understood even a little of the Sanskrit syntax. Although our teacher was capable of teaching well, she was simply unwilling to explain topics to us and was always very grumpy. Easily, the worst teacher I have ever had.

No. Sanskrit unfortunately is a mumbled language : it is beautiful only when religious people chant it and make a special effort to refine it. The most frequent vowel is schwa (a as in about or beggar, or u as in undo or o as in wagon ) which gives it a "grey" quality not unlike English. O is like British o in pole and e like British e in grey. Shakespearean English is very mystical but common English never was even during Shakespeare's time. Same thing for Sanskrit.
OM is "Mine of Infinite virtues (gunas) / potentialities" with each virtue co-existing with its exact opposites in it.....thus balancing the Mine to exactly zero, shunya. From integrated perspective OM is Nothing and from differentiated perspective OM is everything. Nothing contains everything. You take out infinite from it, even then infinite remains.

I am a native Tamil speaker and well versed in English. Recently I got surprised by the amount of hidden knowledge that Sanskrit can offer. Many of the western scientists were Sanskrit scholars ex: Schrödinger, Bohr, Heisenberg, Oppenheimer, Fibonacci etc took knowledge and inspiration from Sanskrit.
You will soon realise that Tamils are living in illusion that their language is the oldest surviving language ,also the knowledge present in Sanskrit in diverse fields like Mathematics, Astronomy, Medicine, Surgery, Economics, Philosophy etc is way more richer than Tamil language

Outstanding interviewer, J. Mislove, deserves credit for conducting an informative interview of Dr. Dean Brown. This was a tight 23 minutes that could easily have become garbled. It held my attention and walked me steadily forward. I cannot say I agree with notions of 'everything being everything' and 'everything being nothing' but such an idea is as good as any when all thinking is seen as an hypothetical tool. Any thesis creates order in the pause required to consider it and a philosophy is a collection of thoughts seeking to hold the pause in one's the thinking ad infinitum. Well done lads. Carry on.

The interviewer mentioned about Brahman around 12:33, and then at 12:54, called it the Supreme deity...Just to clarify here, Brahman is not known as a deity. We don't worship Brahman simply because normal human beings cannot communicate with Brahman like the other deities.
Now as for the Supreme DEITY, there is Lord Brahma who is the God of creation, meaning the creator of all that is living. There is a very big difference between Brahma and Brahman...Where Brahman is indeed the very essence of the universe, the omnipotent "entity" that is present within every human soul, the "Atman", thereby making us humans being tied with Brahman via our souls. This is how the Buddha came to be known as the enlightened, awakened one, because he realized his self as one with the Supreme One, the Brahman. According to the Upanishads, the Brahman is known as the ultimate reality of all existence. Actually I seldom see the divide between the West and East what the professor mentioned. Because although we find a large gap in the linguistics between the East-Asian languages and Indian languages, day-by-day we see more and more proofs of Hinduism and Hindu temples, sculpture and tradition in most of the East-Asian countries like Indonesia, Malaysia, Vietnam and such countries.

Hence, Sanskrit can be considered as a mother to modern Indo-European languages.

Very interesting talk! Agreed the ancient Indian thoughts were original, scientific and very rich. Someone mentioned 11th century of the start of decline, if I understand thats when the Islamic invasion of India started when we saw the destruction and decline of the great Hindus, Buddhists and Sanskrit languages and cultures. Interestingly around that time, many of the Buddhists texts and great scholars from the great universities such as Nalanda found refuge in Tibet under the patronage of the Tibetan kings that many of the ancient texts were carefully translated into Tibetans and given top proirity (i.e. akin to Tibetan project of the US sending first human to moon -:)) that would otherwise been lost in India. The Tibetan spiritual traditions and philosophy which is spreading around the world now by great teachers like the Dalai Lama, has direct source to the Nalanda Indian thoughts. If you listen to Dalai Lama who always gives great credit to ancient Indian thoughts and admirer of that tradition. He starts most of his Buddhist teachings by recitation of Heart Sutra from many traditions and will start off with Sanskrit renditioin.

He pronounced 0:32 _"योग सुत्र/Yoga Sutra"_ & 2:38 _"वेद/Veda"_ perfectly. Sadly even Indians don't appear to pronounce it proper as many Indians will either pronounce it as "योग् सुत्र" or "योगा सुत्रा" & "वेद्" or "वेदा".
I'm from Keralam. In Southern India, in my opinion, we generally use the original Sanskrit pronunciation. Like Sa'm'skrtam (संस्कृतम्) instead Sa'n'skrit, Pra'jna' (प्रज्ञ) instead of Pra'gya', Jnana/Jnanam (ज्ञान) instead of Gyaan, etc. 🙏

In Maharashtra we too don't pronounce words like प्रज्ञा or ज्ञान with "G/ग" but we use "D/द" instead which is probably unique to us. Then for संस्कृत we pronounce ऋ in कृ as "ru" instead of "ri", also in pronunciation of सं we don't pronounce it as सन् or सम् but simply add nasalisation to it like "Sã" which I think is the original use of the "ं" (anusvāra) symbol.

They both come from the same parent language. So, they are highly related, and Sanskrit words are eerily similar to English (by way of Latin descent) words. Examples: dwar-door, brata-brother, divya-divine, ashwa-equia (horses), yog-yoke, etc etc.
