@@holyelliw no it's about West Virginia, written by a guy who had never actually been there before. It could have been "Almost Heaven, Massachusetts..." but West Virginia sounded right. The song is also about a sense of longing for someplace familiar, and could be about any place that means that to someone.

The song became an instant classic in Japan and can be found in many pieces of media around the world. It is beloved by many; Especially those in West Virginia, and Japan.
You got me intrested and I did some research about it and I was really amazed how a very American song became so popular in Japan with such a good movie. thanks for peaking my intrest. 😊

I am from West Virginia. Growing up there I heard this song hundreds of times. This is the most beautiful I have ever heard it preformed. As always, you are amazing. Thank you shar. This has filled my heart with joy.
This is without a doubt the most serene rendition of Country Roads I have ever heard. Also, the river setting is also very fitting and unique to the usual country and road imagery you normally get with this song.
Like if the original version is all about being excited to come home, this is about being there, tranquil and safe, content with yourself and nature around you.

Some weeks before my dad passed, my sister and I sat bedside with him at the hospital one night. They had dimmed the lights for the patients to wind down and John Denver started playing on the radio. In that moment I tried to interpret what "home" meant. Was it a song about yearning to return to a physical place, or about taking that final journey at the end of one's life? And then my sister put herself in front of me so my dad wouldn't see me bawling my eyes out. When I hear this song now it gives me peace and clarity. As does your rendition, so thank you for that. ❤

My Dad and I were walking back to our hotel in Germany one night, and walked by a pub and the people on the second story were singing it, as loud as anything. I'm not even from West Virginia but it made me feel like home wasn't that far away. It's something else.
i was in korea, and visited a museum that asked people if they had any of their most beloved objects to give, and one of the items was a john denver vinyl - i had been in korea for a while at that point and was a little homesick, seeing that this song makes people around the world happy, soothed the homesickness just a little bit 🫶🏻

My dad is still alive but let me tell you back when I was just a kid I would remember working on the farm with my dad, completely in love & needing his guidance & he would turn on the radio to fill our quiet times. My friend just passed away a few month ago. I imagine that this is what she is doing now. Just peacefully rowing his boat to afterlife with cute imaginary creature like in her favourite anime. Seeing this my heart mixed with feelings of sadness, calm, and a little happiness knowing now she no longer need to suffer from her chronic illness or have to struggle with this harsh world.
