- So we know that physics got turned upside down at the turn of the 20th century, but how did that all begin? What was the first thing that set this whole chain of events into motion? Well it all started with Max Planck, blackbody radiation, and the ultraviolet catastrophe. Gather round, children. Let me tell you a tale...

Your intro alone just made me so happy.
I always replay it ~3 times before actually getting to business
I felt like it was really dorky and a little cringey the first time. But he is sooo good at breaking down complex concepts in the least amount of time. He doesn't bs and wind on for 30 minutes... Unlike some people I personally am. Anyway after a while the song grows on you, it is cute dorky now.
😘
Me too!
Hii from India 🇮🇳
i’ve always been mesmerized by scientists discovering such a revolutionary thing as Planck did. as it said in the video he didn’t believe his own discovery but imagine how incredible it’d feel to literally discover how one of the fundamental things about the universe
I don't think it felt incredible for Planck, as he couldn't even believe his theory himself!
yo u have the same profile picture as me lol
Professor dave i have had two professors explain this to me and your explanation was the only one that actually made it into my head. Thank you!

Dave Ghrol made me pass all my topics in physics! THANK YOU SO MUCH!
Miss Jackson yeah he ain't like the others....... he's a class apart
I expected him to break into Everlong any second
The Dave Ghrol of science
*Grohl
That shit you just said about the quantization being multiples of such a small number just blew my whole world apart.
Soo Much red? If there is drag, even on a single referenced plane, wouldn't there be wash?
It's a double drag that 4 happens anyway; In what set is 1 fuzzy?
3 at least has a unity and a fuzzy...
The fuc were u smoking
this is weird but why do i get so happy when i finally understand a physics concept?? this is only part 1 and i already feel like i can answer my exams hahhaha
Dude same, I am 2 days away from an exam and Dave Grohl is saving the day
@@llll-lk2mm did you do well bro?
OH MY GOD SAME I WAS SO BLUR IN CLASSS BUT HIS CHANNEL HELPED ME TO UNDERSTAND WITHIN FEW MINUTES
Your description on the quantization of energy is nigh unparalleled, even a kid could fully grasp it from this, so much sense hit me on the topic after watching this.. things I had initially took for granted and never really understood on quantization make so much sense now , its almost crazy , the whole thing on the miniscule scale/nature of quantization being the reason why it was overlooked in the classical approach of black body radiation calculation is crazy, thanks Professor Dave...
your pace of explaining anything is perfect.
JOTARO!!!!

Jolly good, this is. I am taking a course in modern physics starting two weeks from now. I knew you would have something for me and boy am I excited for this youtube series and this course after watching this video.
This channel is such a helpful channel. You make topics which seems too complicated in books more easier to understand. You've helped me through my board exam review which I passed and thankfully also topped by the way, and now on to my masters degree. Thank you so much proffesor Dave. Keep explaining! ❤
I have never ever come upon an explanation of the Ultraviolet catastrophe, and thereby Planck's equation, as clear and concise as this one.
I am currently in the last leg of my schooling to become an x-ray tech; these videos have helped me understand the more drawn out parts of radiation physics than any book that I have paid hundreds of dollars for. thank you so much!! and please keep making these videos
I watched many videos and thought for hours. But I couldn't completely understand the concept that you make clear in 2:10 -2:30 seconds. Thank you so much. You are awesome.
Why I did not find you in the past 29 years of my life. Awesome !
you are the first one I approach when I have to learn a topic.Thank you so much Professor Dave.
This is the best explanation of quantisation i’ve ever seen.
I am so happy that I could share this with my son! Thanks Professor Dave!!!
i love you so much for making this playlist😭
he gastado bastante tiempo buscando un explicación clara de la catástrofe ultravioleta, y este ha sido el mejor video que he encontrado hasta ahora. Gracias!!
my exam is in a few days. This man is a hero.
Ahhh... The wonderful catastrophe just got you a new subscriber!
I feel smart now so I actually feel like crying 😭 thank u professor dave
Thank you Professor David❤ Watching your videos in India❤️
The ad hoc approach is baffling. That’s the spark that defines genius.
We need one intro for the debunking videos. Like this, "He debunks a lot of quacky stuffs, prof dave debunks!"
Planck's approach was to analyze the entropy of blackbody radiation as a function of energy. To make both Wein's Law and Rayleigh-Jeans Law consistent with the Second Law of Thermodynamics, he included an additional "guess" term proportional to the frequency.
A paper titled "Planck’s Route to the Black Body Radiation Formula and Quantization" by Michael Fowler (7/25/08) gives a nice discussion.
Professor Dave man I love you fr
If I start a shoegaze band one of the album's will be named Ultraviolet Catastrophe
Would the chords be quantized on such an incredibly small scale that the gradations between the notes are utterly minuscule, so as to appear as one continuous spectrum?
@@NiflheimMists yes, and a finite duration of constantly increasing frequency starting at different times relative to the start will be looped too.
Sounds like a grindcore song
Great video. I feel like I’ve been slightly in the dark on black bodies my whole life. Something didn’t quite click. Now it does. You’ve explained it brilliantly.
I think this is the best video to help me understand the ultraviolet catastrophe.
I'm a biology student and you explain some of these concepts better than a number of my lecturers. Thanks you're helpingme out a lot🤘
Thanks a lot Professor Dave! My book speaks in chinese to me but now I understand the idea
Sir Dave your lectures are quite helpful at FSc level and MDCAT preparation...
I heard somewhere that Planck just got irritated with the math and introduced h as the minimum energy value, fully certain that h=0, so that classical mechanics would still work and minimum energy would still be 0. But later in the calculation he saw that h has an actual value, and not just 0
How would classical mechanics work by taking h=0?
this guy looks like ranbir kapoor
That my freind is called planck postulate. Planck him said "I tried all the thermodynamic things, but it cant answer the question. This postulate works, but indong know why"
@Lady Mercy thanx 🤘
You r the best your channel deserves more than 10 million thanks for the explanation
It's absolutely incredible that an ad hoc utilization of Planck's expression for black body radiation turned out to be so amazingly useful. It's hard to believe sometimes that hypotheses can become such hard & fast truths about spacetime. Wow.
And sometimes it feels like it comes from simple laziness:
"I just want to deal with integers right now; it's easier. Oh, that reveals fundamental truths about the nature of reality? That's cool, I guess. 😎" -Max Planck, probably
It's because of youtube and videos like this, I think the future of teaching is delivered with such videos with teachers being supplementary tutors and practical engagers
Far better than watching them derive equations, work no examples, skip steps, give history lessons, the list goes on and on. The history is very important but not at the expense of class time on such difficult topics. We can learn all that later on our own time if interested.
My physics textbook brought me here..✋🏻
Your videos are great. It feels like I am listening to a story. I love it!
Thankyou. Such an articulate explanation. You gained a subscriber!
this video is great and is like a story of origin of topics i stuided so far and this video is just great
“Sensitivity is always limited by the fact that energy cannot be less than planck's quantum of action and because all detectors have residual random activity or noise against which signals must be discriminated.”
Next time you think you can hear Professor Dave think about what he’s got in his fridge, remember, you’re probably making it up, or rounding to a closely approximated guess.
This actually really helped after being completely lost in class. Thanks alot!!!
I always knew "black bodies" were hot. What I didn't know is that they kick started modern physics. How cool is that!
Why yes I will sub to the channel. What a life saver!
i get the concept of anything from this video series and move on forward underanding by wandering everywhere
Thanks professor, you have no idea how much I appreciate your explanation
If the whole world had teachers like you, and scientists like Einstein still alive, we would surely have colonized Mars till now.
Better yet, maybe we wouldn't *have* to colonize Mars -- maybe we would be doing a better job of taking care of this one.
If the government would stop pushing so much money into the army and put it into research we would have mars colonized by now.
Dw we have elon musk
@@stephaniebock1016 Or maybe we should stop blaming the government AND also stop electing leaders who do these things. Who is responsible really? What if the politicians just blame the electorate and say they're doing what their constituents want?
@@danielthesantos
You're correct to look into taking up responsibility rather than placing blame on one another. The entire idea of having a governing body is what's the problem, actually..
All systems solely serve as a placeholder to absolve responsibility and place blame on others for personal mistakes. Humans are unconsciously shrouded in the fear of the unknown. You can find this fear controlling every aspect of human life - from the development of religious deities in search of answers to human purpose; to racism and the unconscious fear of never knowing what it would be like to experience life as a different skin color (despite the fact ALL humans possess melanin; just in varying amounts). Because of these fears we deem never to be answered in our human lifetime, we create a grandiose division complex of fallacious sustenance.
We appoint this flawed idea of a being possessing higher authority in hopes of providing alleviation and answers to our fears, but when we begin to realize the appointed positor has failed at providing any answers for our unknown ponderings, we place sole blame on their hands, rather than taking responsibility for our own internal disappointment.
Thank you, Prof. Dave. this brought back memories of what I've learned in College. I have a book, by Frank Tipler, on the Physics of Immortality.
Simple,better than many videos.
Sir, I have found similar videos on UA-cam discussing the same topic but no one of them said that the equation for black-body radiation had a constant n which can be only an integer which preserves the quantization principle, all the equation just mentioned Plank's constant and the frequency.
n is basically the number of photon packets
so think of it as (no. packets)(Planck's constant)(frequency of radiation)
Hey chemistry nerd, I found you !
@@xainabshuja4215 this does not seem to be the case here. n is simply an integer value that keeps E from having a continuous value.
@@nournawar1762 the n is the number of photons, which has to be an integer.
One of the best video about BBR. Thanks a lot Dr Dave
Thank you I am talking a physics exam and this video helped a lot 👍
Truly excellent explanation
That was so good
Thanks professor
And you know something guy’s I study this in the last year of the high school
In Iraq and I see most of you studying this in the college 💪🏻❤️
Very good video. मजा आ गया बहुत सीखने को मिला
I know this is a pretty old video, but thank you! I struggle when listening to lectures, but you explained it in a simple yet thorough way that helped me understand. Your videos really make me enjoy learning, so thank you!
I am his follower. I tell you he is truly awesome I don't know where he teaches in the US.
Oh no - Thomas S. Kuhn has made excellent work (here we are talking about his book "blackbody radiation and the quantum discontinuity" (1978), right?). Kuhn and Martin J. Klein are my recommended sources for reliable history... The story is (as always) more complicated. Rayleigh anticipated what became later known as Rayleigh-Jeans law in 1900. This part is correct. However, he introduced a damping factor and did not work out the numerical factors. Only in 1905 he came back to this work and is is super well documented that Planck did not care about the so-called UV catastrophe (an expression coined by Ehrenfefest in 1911, btw). Perhaps most important: the equipartition theorem was heavily disputed at that time. It is simply wrong to regard it as part of "classical physics" (e.g. Lord Kelvin argued in 1900 that the "equipartition theorem" is probably wrong). Planck took a very different path, working with entropy etc.pp. It is actually not so hard: read the sources or "decent" historians of physics. When it comes to the origin of QM the internet (and many textbooks of course) are full of "quasi-history"...
I think you miss some topic in physics especially about electrical current .thanks so much professor , your channel is the best
I covered them a little in the classical physics playlist but not enough, I will expand at some point.
@@ProfessorDaveExplains thanks professor ! i study a lot by myself from your channel . your explanation always easy to understand 😃😃👍👍
Dev Sir made me to pass but I thought I will but i came FIRST🥇🥇🥇 THEN EVER
Hmm I’m Dr Dave and I teach physics, I am glad to see this channel.
The claim at 00:55 is highly disputed. The eye doesn't care about Watts, it "sees" photons. But the peak of the planck wave for photon rate (at 5778 K) is in the IR-region. This only applies for a linear wavelength scale. If you use a linear frequency scale, the peak positions change again.
Thank you professor David.
You easily explained answer of 2075 Bsc Physics Tribhuwan University #Nepal Question number 7(b) which wasn't mentioned in any book and guide. ❤️💙 Always Fan😊
what was the question?
شكرا 🤍 شكرا مره أخرى من اجل ترجمه🤍🌸
Gosh! I don't know how you could have said more with less than you did in this little lecture!
Your channel is the best, thank you!
Es o meu heroi!
thank you for that awesome explanation
Thanks Dave. I needed this!
"catastrophe" comes from the Greek and means, literally, nothing more than "turning downwards", not a "dramatic turn of events". "ultraviolet catastrophe" describes the dipping down in the uv spectrum.
Wow, that makes a lot more sense! Thank you.
Thanks
But a room full of scientists in panic because of ultraviolet radiation is also a very nice image
@@enzoqueijao that's exactly how I always imagined it
It's structure and content - not a thing to complain about!
You are Incredible. Thank you so much.
BEST EXPLANATION EVER
Nice explanation. I am a physics lay person. I have never heard that explanation of Planck’s constant before, it suddenly seems to me to have fundamental importance.
Professor Dave....you just look exact like an Indian actor RANBIR KAPOOR🤯
dude I came to comment same thing 😂🤣
I could listen to Professor Dave all night.
Thankfully. Nice class
very understandable explanation, thanks
That is exactly what it is; a "tale" it is not physics just science. The basic laws of physics are still at the base of his discovery.
What a great video. Thanks brother!
Thank you for your video 👍
Professor Dave, the atomic vibration was the explanation back in 1900ish when they didn't know anything about the electronic transitions!
This explanation remains consistent for this phenomenon.
Thanks for your great videos!
Awesome, as always
no way he has a parsec diagram on his arm ahaha thats too much
we're in a simulation guys. the programmer didn't program the energy levels inbetween only certain levels
Thanks for helping me in physics 🙏😅
I think you can show how wien and rayleigh - jeans failed to fit the maxwell boltzman distrubiton curve. It will give another perspective why planck was such a great physicst
Prof Dave is marvelous
Very nice video. Thanks
Nice work! There's just one part I'm confused by. If the measure of energy is quantized by discrete packets, but the frequency value multiplied is not made up of discrete packets, isn't the resulting possibility of energy values not quantized? I get the impression this gets explained later.
Very nice video
Any valuable explanation of how quantization really can explain the ultravioleta catastrophe please
Same here. I have never understood relationship between black body radiation and quantization of radiation. Even in this video.
Can someone explain me how quantization solved ultraviolet Catastrophe. Even without quantization a material is supposed to emit radiation of all wavelength thats why it will never become invisible, what's the need of quantisation. What am i missing
@@anshul9462 same here lol
But WHY the energy must be quantized? And WHY the intensity curve of Planck goes to zero on higher frequencies?
Really amazing work. Wish I had professors like you in my college
How exactly does the quantisation of light fix the distribution of the radiation?
good question! it has to do with limits and restructuring the Rayleigh-Jeans law somehow. i don't remember exactly!
Professor Dave Explains thanks for the reply. I'll look into that
Eddie Alexandroff lol, the reason I watched the video. D'oh!
Off to wikipedia!
Zeno's paradox. It prevents vibrations at lengths approaching infinitely small (below h), limiting the energy from 'piling up' down there. essentially.
ua-cam.com/video/tQSbms5MDvY/v-deo.html sorry prof dave.
That plot is Crystal Ball.
Intro is absolutely attractive
Holy ****! This was such a clear explanation! You are a great teacher, keep up the great work
How come this is a cler explanation?
According to plank formula,
E should increase with increase in frequency.
But beyong visible spectrum , waves with high frequency contains less energy or are of less intensity.
Explain this now to me.
@@dime3868 ask the question in actual English instead of what ever???is that like a pigeon English or what?
EvolutionHasEvidence Opinion_is_opinion lol "pigeon English"
that makes sense... if you look it everything is just a vibration of sort the reason its quantised is because the separation between level is just the "dead space where force cancel" before it start its unbalance again
