Got both, several mini griptillians and a red G10 terminus XR. I've done some modding on my terminus XR though. Removed the flipper, swapped the clip with a benchmade deep carry clip (required you to destroy the original clip to keep the threaded part). Only worry I have is the durability of the XR lock studs which are plastic, would have preferred metal studs. But with those mods I prefer it over the original mini griptillian (154cm version).
I have 2 terminus xr knives that I like a lot. One just like you're showing and a D2. I bought the D2 used and it is butter smooth. The S35 I picked up new, and it improved after cleaning and lube. Still needs some breaking in, but that means that it's built to last.
That is a surprise...I think..maybe not. I don’t own either knives, so I can’t really comment on your choice. I guess I’ll have to trust you on the winner. Thanks Bryan for bringing these knives to your channel.
Terminus is one of my favorites. Tough break in for the flipper but pretty awesome. I own 2 of them. I did have issues with the pocket clips when they showed up but through investigation, I realized they were installed wrong causing them to not want to come off the pocket.
I just got the All Black D2 from SOG yesterday and the S35VN the first one I got and am loving is the BDZ1 lol I got the Green D2 coming through Fed Ex Today!!! Gotta say I dig this fucking knife!!!
Overall I would agree with you except for the fact that I had the original Terminus with the BD 1 Z. I got a great deal when they were moving to the S35. But within a week the omega spring broke. I sent it back. Now I have never had that happen with my Grips or other Benchmade knives except one. I have both mini and full size Grips, but with the Spyderco style hole. I have had issues with the Benchmade omega springs on the Bugout. In fact I just shipped mine off to be repaired for that issue. It is the third one I had and the first two were returned to REI who does exchanges for up to a year. I really like the Bugout, and those spring held up longer than the Terminus. So I just don’t trust the SOG version of the axis lock. If they fix that in the SOG I would consider it because I liked it.
It had been years since I bought a SOG, but when people started talking about the Terminus XR I took a gamble and purchased one a few weeks ago. It was terrible. Literally in the top three of worst out of the box experiences I’ve ever had with a folding knife. It was so bound up it wouldn’t even deploy with both hands. Played with the pivot screw and could never get it adjusted so it would actually deploy and have minimal blade play, plus it wouldn’t close without assistance from my free hand. So I took it apart and cleaned, lubed polished, tweaked the lock, but still couldn’t seem to find anything that resembled a happy medium. After wasting way too much time trying to fix it I finally just screwed it back together, ate the restocking fee and returned it. By that point I was seriously so disappointed I didn’t even want to bother dicking with warranty service. Just wanted it out of my life.
I have the thumb hole sheepsfoot version of the mini Grip. Got it a couple years ago on sale at Blade HQ for $80. Got the Sog last year from Knifecenter, also on sale. Can't recall the price, but it was under $80. I would choose the mini Grip 10 times out of 10. The irony is I carry the Sog much more often. The Sog is one of my lenders.
My problem with things like slick CF scales is that I never feel like I can use them. I'm more likely to reach for my more expensive Para 3 (or mini grip if I had it) than something with CF scales because it feels better. Is it just me that thinks this way? Like the mini grip might look bad, but which am I gonna want to use more?
I have both the regular and D2 Terminus XR and like them, but it would be so much better if they got rid of the pointless thumbstud and did a full flat grind.
This is an interesting BTTD, I really like a few of the new SOG’s! I’ve never owned a SOG but this one I really am thinking of picking up! Good stuff Bryan as always bud! 👍🏻
I got a mini grip from the custom store, and it is a great knife, but the custom bugout blows it out of the water SO HARD with the same materials. Also, I would carry the Terminus I lent you for your first review more than the mini grip any day, great battle.
You are right. I have both of these knives and SOG is clearly the best. Actually I have a G2/ D2; a S35V/carbon, an XR Ultra S35V/carbon and even a slipjoint XR with BD1 steel. They are all good. Don't really like the Mini Grip at all, but the BugOut is OK.
I havent done any research on this, but I have to wonder how good the heat treat is on SOG's s35vn is. It is a better steel. But the quality of the heat treat can make a huge difference. We know Benchmade has that sorted in most cases.
@@SliceyDicey That's interesting. I am wondering if it is "chippy"? It will be fun to watch as these get more use. Especially the s35vn. I know they cryo treat their D2. I am pulling for SOG, but retain a degree of trepidation.
Pretty much no point in buying a benchmade now until they lower the butterfly tax. I would still buy BM auto though. Almost picked up one of those today.
Thank you. For not fingering the blade over and over(must be a metaphor there). For not playing obnoxious intro or background music. For not continuously opening and closing the blade. For not cutting the paper 100 times when 2 cuts will do. For not trotting out multiple expensive or custom knives as "size comparisons" when most viewers will have no idea of their size. You've mentioned that you are a professional performer. I have a suggestion for UA-cam: require all knife reviewers to show credentials as professional performers before allowing them to post knife reviews.
My terminus says CTS-BDZ1, it has a whole extra Z! I also got one of the D2 mini-grips, it was still $80. So as far as the D2 models go, the SOG clobbers it even harder on value.
buy the Benchmade. in 20 years you can give your son your well-worn but perfectly functional grip. You can keep that sog in a glass case and it will still fall apart in a year. Benchmades are also made in America
SOG pulling it together. Honestly, I've hated SOGs I've bought in the past but had to admit they were hardcore tools. I abused the hell out of one or two but they kept on keepin on. I have also gotten SOGs I loved all around.
Biggest reason for me to buy the Grip over the SOG is country of origin, the SOG is produced in China and I'm willing to pay a bit more for USA made these days. Good video overall though! I'm not really in the market for either one, but truthfully the SOG does catch my eye quite a bit more than the grip.
The SOG clip binds on the hem of my BDU pocket. The edges also had to be knocked off the spine and flipper tab. The thumb stud is basically useless and I removed it. This is a stay-at-home knife at best, the clip alone is a deal-breaker. SOG get your shit together. #ComeAtMeBro
SOG company/products. Highly underrted. They DO put thought behind their designs e.g. My 11 yer old Mini Vulcan has groves ont he scales (both sides) that lead your thumb to the stud. Simple but necessary. Why this isn't a standard design feature on ALL pocket knives is a mystery to me... ...this knife also has a metal back spacer, G10 , zero flex, VG10 steel (good enough for most "everyday tasks", easy to shparen and has their version of the AXIS Lock. ANd was roughly $50.00...maybe a little less... Griptilian---online line with no "Butterfly tax" and actually offers good value e.g. Grivery/S90V variant for the cost of a Spyderco PM2. Benchmade's "amaing warranty" YTers go gaga over....ummmm...what is the point of mentionig that over and over if most "enthusiasts" almost immediately start modding their knvies?? :P Voiding the warranty. :) Does any one realy "use the warranty"?? How often do knives "fail...under regular use" out of the blue? It's not an electronic appliance...not that complicated a product. THey are only "broken" out of stupidity e.g. prying.
I own the D2 and S35VN Terminuses and they both have this horrible stiff action that renders the thumb studs useless and the flipper thoroughly unpleasant. Something must be wrong with the springs.
I bought the SOG all black D2 version last week for $54 and I absolutely love it! The ergonomics and feel of the G10 is great
Great video. There's no denying that SOG is on a roll lately...The Terminus XR is a great value knife.
I’ve had both of these knives and I agreed with you on every single category!

Thanks for the scored comparison, helped me out a bunch in my decision.. def subbed have been tuned in for about 2weeks, excellent content Sir👍🏾
I carry the sheepsfoot full size griptilian, but agree about the handle feeling cheap. Just ordered the 20cv version based on your recommendation
MUCH better knife.
Literally feels like a whole different platform.
Next level up it the contoured titanium scales from flytanium.
That is a surprise...I think..maybe not. I don’t own either knives, so I can’t really comment on your choice. I guess I’ll have to trust you on the winner. Thanks Bryan for bringing these knives to your channel.

I bought the G10 SOG. I want the flipped tab.

Very nice! The Terminus and Trident are in my Top5 folders this year. Who'd have thought huh?? A SOG lol🍻
I've had the D2 Terminus XR for a few months. The lock springs broke yesterday.
It had been years since I bought a SOG, but when people started talking about the Terminus XR I took a gamble and purchased one a few weeks ago. It was terrible. I've always loved the blade shape on the sog. Very bugout-esque
You can get the mini deep carry clip from Benchmade for $5. Solves many issues.
I have the thumb hole sheepsfoot version of the mini Grip. Got it a couple years ago on sale at Blade HQ for $80. Got the Sog last year from Knifecenter, also on sale. I have both and agree (but the pocket clip on my sog was poo)

From where is that exclusive terminus xr?
Don't remember. I asked the guy I got it from.

I've got a lot more miles on the Terminus than the Mini Grip and it seems fine to me.

@@stronglikemonkey The S35 is cryo also. Doesn't seem chippy.
I'm a BM fan but I agree with the SOG being the winner...
Pretty much no point in buying a benchmade now until they lower the butterfly tax. I would still buy BM auto though. Almost picked up one of those today.
I got a custom mini grip tanto with green and blue scales. For the price, it’s better to get the full sized custom.
I expected the outcome, but thought it would be closer.

SOG the best no need for a contest. Buy the crimson handle. 😷🤟🏼
It’s so good looking
Some good points of comparison but the video does not mention something important to me. Does SOG donate money to "gun grabbers"?
Biggest reason for me to buy the Grip over the SOG is country of origin, the SOG is produced in China and I'm willing to pay a bit more for USA made these days. Good video overall though! I'm not really in the market for either one, but truthfully the SOG does catch my eye quite a bit more than the grip.
SOG is uncomfortable in the hand; handle has sharp edges. I’ll have to file them down a bit… something I shouldn’t need to do
if the action was better on the terminus and it would be one of the best knives for under 100 dollars
I'm a native Oregonian. I try to shop local, but darn that sog is priced right.
Yet SOG still thanks you for paying them for their crappy knife.....

SOG all the way and also I do not support anti 2A company (Benchmade).
You flopped the flip 🤪 and went right on like nothing happend. With. (A-THOR-UH-TAE)
