It is the highest temple dedicated to Goddess Ganga. The holy River Ganges originates from the Gangotri glacier, located here, and is called Bhagirathi. The main attraction in Gangotri is the Gangotri Temple, where Goddess Ganga is worshipped. A 20-ft-high structure, the exquisite temple is made with white granite.

The temple is said to have been built by the Nepalese general Amar Singh Thapa in the early 18th century. Gangotri is also associated with several legends and myths.
