This semester, I used LaTeX for every lab report, math HW assignment, and physics problem set and it was very rewarding. The first few weeks were a bit rough but after that, it became so natural after I setup a few templates and custom commands.
I can say almost without hesitation that your Latex videos are one of the best (if not the best) tutorials one can find in video format. There do exist very exhaustive videos, but yours are nicely divided and provide the essentials to create nice documents at any academic level. I wanted to learn Latex long ago, and thanks to your videos now I am writing my master thesis in Latex.
I had to give a 30 minute presentation in my PDEs course recently. Used overleaf to create the PowerPoint. It definitely made the slides easier to read and understand with the latex font and organization. 10/10 would recommend
Thanks for the video. Eat -> Sleep -> Math -> Sport -> Repeat, adding "sport" will empower a lot learning math, I've been telling my child who's also in U of T now.
This couldn't have come out at a more opportune time. Recently resolved to swap from word to LaTeX after too many crashes when implementing LaTeX equations. Much appreciated Doc!
@@DrTrefor Wanted to also say thank you so much for your SIR videos. I'm hopeless at math and had to write a report about it, you made it super easy for 16 year old me at the time to understand. Keep up the great work and take a break if you need it!
Haha, I wrote so many LaTeX documents in the last couple of years, my beautiful latex thesis, its beamer presentation, now my resume, I learned so much and I feel extremely skilled! *a new video showcasing 88939 extra packages that would've been useful*
Latex lab report templates are where it’s at. Also wrote a handful of research papers this semester, I found a really nice and good looking template. Also the resume templates are solid. Been really really happy with it so far. Also excited to see overleaf starting to market.
Sir, these lectures were indeed foundation stones for me, thank you. I had a little doubt of increasing the overall dimension of the written content in latex?
Really great video, hope to see more on LaTeX. I've been using it for almost a year, but almost every day I find something I didn't know how to do or some hidden feature.
In math mode, you say there's no space after that comma, but there is. Compare $3, 4$ and 3,4 and you'll see. But yeah of course sometimes you want more space. My point is just that there is a space there, so you don't necessarily have to add more.
My university provides overleaf premium. I never really had to use it until this semester, where the professor requested we submit our homework (Wireless and Mobile Networking Systems) using a pdf generated from LaTeX. I still don't know if it's the right tool for me to take notes - I find that google docs fits my needs just fine. Maybe it's like vim, where if you invest enough time into it you become more productive?
Nice! Personally, it took me to grad school to start taking notes in LaTeX because I just wasn't fast enough, but its one of those things where when you start doing it you quickly become fast enough and then are glad and think why didn't I do this earlier:D
I've never seen pseudocode rendered exactly how I'd like -- not sure if you know anything about that, but if you have a very pretty pseudocode style I'd love to see it!
Thanks for the video! One suggestion for a Latex topic I'd have is bibtex styles. I'm writing my Master's thesis in theoretical physics and I have collected my references in Jabref. In principle, everything works, but I struggle to find a decent style. I tried unsrt to have the citations sorted chronologically. But first, it doesn't abbreviate "et al", so when I quote a paper with many authors like the Planck papers (I write in cosmology) it's like a full page for just one reference. I could of course manually change that in the bibtex reference but that's kind of ugly. And second, it doesn't handle online references well, I just want something like the URL and "accessed on date x". Maybe any suggestions on a good bibtex style?
Btw, if anyone is interested, I solved my problems as follows: my bibtex style (unsrt) did not support url and urldate. But you can just put \url{....} directly into one of the fields which are supported, e.g. the author field, if you don't want to specify an author of the webpage anyway. In the latex preamble, I used the package xurl instead of the normal url, for example as otherwise urls do not contain line breaks, which is a problem as urls are often quite long. Not the most elegant solution, but I did not find a bibtex style which did support urls and had all the advantages I liked about unsrt, e.g. sorting the references chronologically.
Great tips! Is there any installable Latex editor that offers the same ease of use of Overleaf (importing packages, easy edit-view cycle, rich syntax capabilities, etc.)?
At my university, we shall always include characters with spaces in all of our assignments. Could you show how to count characters with spaces in LaTeX?
Great information, thank you. Maybe a lesson on producing great tables! Just one comment, could you slow down just a bit please. Lots of great information in too short a time.
Excuse me Professor I use Overleaf for my physics courses. When I have a project that contains multiple .tex files and I compile one of these files, the PDF takes the name of the project and not the file itself. How can I solve this issue?
Warning!! If you are going to use the "minted' package, you'll need to install Pygments software on your computer or you will get a build/compiler error!
You forgot step 1: Get rid of Computer Modern and use a typeface that people whose name doesn’t start with K and and with nuth like the look of. (Ok, i get it. When you actually have it published, it will be in the publishers typefaces. But otherwise ...) Also, pronouncing it with an s-sound at the end (and the ay at the start) is so not helping to differentiate LaTeX from latex. How you say »latex document« really sounds … rubbery, to put it SFW.

When it comes to making beautiful documents with LaTeX, what about exploring the Tufte package? Too specific? Really enjoy the videos BTW.
Could you make a video on pgfcalendar
It's really easy to follow your steps, thanks a lot for the video.
