Watch this before come to Hoi An? Let see, you visited the city for a few hours, you did no research on what the city has to offer, you did no research on the city history, and then to declare it's overated. Dont do an informative video if you dint have any information. Just saying.
I agreed. This video kind of ruin my view of Hoi A because of his negative critiques. It’s just not for him. But other do enjoy it. I don’t know why I even came across this video anyway. SMH.
agree. the main tourist area isn't only just hoi an. so many lovely restaurants out in the rice fields outside the main area. did you even explore and venture out? seems lacking to me....
What's wrong with his views on Hoi An? A tourist trap instead of an authentic Vietnamese place? I appreciate these types of vids because it's not ass-kissing like most others. A few relatives of mine share almost the same feeling: there's not much there except the lights at night, and nobody wanted to spend more than a day there.
It’s so refreshing to have a different point of view. I don’t agree with everything but I’m not a sheep who will listen to one guy online like all the haters on here seem to think ppl do. For every 10 videos that are an advertisement it’s nice to see one talking about negatives. Keep it up don’t listen to these sensitive ppl in the comments
I went last September and felt the same, vendors made me crazy, from 16PM buses full of tourists arrive in town and madness starts, Disneyland situation, cannot walk, we went back to the hotel quickly
I saw a long-time English teacher in Chiang Mai comment that Thailand core value 8, service 8. Vietnam core value 10, service 5. Many international tourists will be surprised by the beauty of Hoi An, Ninh Binh, Hagiang loop but yes, Vietnam still has many limitations. Thailand has 500 years of peace, while Vietnam had many wars until 1979, embargo until 1995. Vietnam has not had much time and finance to develop tourism. If I remember correctly: Thailand has made a lot of profit when leasing the airport to the US to bomb Vietnam (more than the total number of bombs in World War II).
Awesome vid man, never been to Vietnam yet, I usually stay in the Philippines and Thailand when I go home to SEA, but watching your vids make me wanna visit too
Currently in Hoi An and loving it. Yes, lots of shopping and vendors can be a little pushy but we don’t find it bad. Love the quaintness of all the lanterns at night. Too busy and touristy mid day. Much fewer tourists in the morning and evening when all the day trippers aren’t there.
Was in Hoi An back in September and my experience was a different one. I didn’t find the vendors to be overly aggressive (Cartagena, Colombia vendors are aggressive). I simply never broke stride and simply said “Thank you”, and kept walking. Didn’t find many that actually came up to me. There’s not a lot of stuff to do there. That part is true. That part where you were in is definitely a lot of tourists and all of the temples do charge. That area that you were in...where all the clothing vendors and other vendors is not all of Hoi An. Once you leave that area, you get a lot more of the authentic Vietnamese feel. The nightlife in Hoi An is nice, but it’s not a “party” place. It’s a cool, laid back vibe...where not a lot of people bother you. I personally liked Hoi An. Got some clothes made there and will definitely return.
Obviously if there are no locals in the old town then there must be places where they hang out, but you didn’t bothered to do your research. Just less than 5 mins away from the old town is tiger market. Buzzing with locals and tons of road side hawkers and stalls. Had the best salt coffee from an unassuming push cart. So don’t complain because you are ignorant
Ugh. 🙄 about Ba Na Hills, apparently it didn’t cross your mind that maaaayybe it was geared towards the locals who want to see “something like Europe” and it’s the closest thing they can get to enjoy coz not every local can afford to go to Europe. I understand that YOU didn’t want to see European-copied sites in Vietnam, but then if you did your research you would’ve known it wasn’t for you. It wasn’t intended for YOUR kind of traveler. But not every site in a country is geared towards foreigners, some are for locals’ enjoyment.
The point of vaccination is for people’s interest. I wouldn’t suggest this for an active “family” vacation… I’d go there for the chill, relax, educational and shopping vacation! Know what you want to do, before you down grade a place! That place WAS NOY FOR YOU!! BUT 100% for me and my daughter (adult)!
I think a very touristy place can be a great spot to start exploring a country you've never been to before. There are more English speakers, which is nice if you need help. It looks like a beautiful city. Often the tour guides are a great source of information on where to go next to get a more authentic Vietnamese experience 😊.
Not Vietnamese so Im not offended by the shade. As a non-local, I appreciate an honest perspective. Have heard good things about Hoi An though from other tourists so I'd probably still visit Hoi An at some point. But definitely appreciate different perspectives about the place.
Very true felt Thai people were more friendly than Vietnamese people.. I have been Thailand four times and would love to go again, but I wouldn’t say the same thing for Vietnam…
Bro messed up. Hoian has a COMPLETELY different vibe once dark. It’s like another world compared to the same place in daylight. Have to experience it to understand.
First time in Hoi An 2002, no coast road, no sealed roads and no bridges across the river. It's a tourist town that leans heavily on its heritage. By the way, the lantern tradition is BS. But going back to Da Nang in May and looking forward to seeing Hoi An.
Just got back from 2 days in Da Nang & 3 in Hoi An. Agree with everything you said about Hoi An. Its a tourist hell-hole. You are lucky you missed the night time - rammed with english, chinese, and Korean tourists. Any attempt to have a relaxing drink or dinner on the old town side of the river is blighted by badly sung live rock music belting out from all the chav/bogan bars on the other side of the river. There is even a Mr Bean bar and a bar called The Fox & Hounds. That should tell you everything you need to know about the quality of tourists visting Hoi An. You forgot to mention thr incredibly annoying scooters everywhere doing the traditional endless horn beeping at you and anyone else just trying to enjoy a relaxing evening. Even in the small laneways. We dont normally do touristy spots but clearly we failed with Hoi An. And this is in Winter. It must be a total hellscape in Summer! Avoid.
I've been in Vietnam, including Ha Long Bay, Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, and Hoi An, three times since April, 2022. I share your impression of Hoi An, but, also ... you think Hoi An's "touristy?" Head to Phu Quoc - an area that appears to have been completely designed and manufactured ONLY for tourists. I'm aware the Vietnamese Government is curious as to why people come to visit once, but, unlike other countries in S.E. Asia, they never return. One thing is what you're experiencing, but also, in the larger cities, LOTS of noise, traffic, and pollution levels that place air quality among the worst in the world (Hanoi especially!) However, even in quieter places like Hoi An, I'm struck by an attitude I'm perceived only as a "mark." Your only function in that area is to be taken advantage of by locals. Recently there was a story of a Vietnamese street vendor charging a tourist the equivalent of $50 USD for two melons. Vietnam is simply killing its tourism business.
you are wrong about Phu Quoc. not a lot of people have been there and ONLY the theme park is designed for tourists to mimic Venice. I have only heard good things about Vietnamese domestic tourists and all of Phu Quoc's beaches are still pretty much untouched. so do your research you know NOTHING about PQ.
Thailand suits you better man. Pattaya is best I guess, ALOT of "things" to do. I am sure any places in Việt Nam is overrated for you. Thanks for your review!
Arn’t you a foreigner?? You came with negative attitude. But you are fortunate to be able to travel and have money at a young age … your rating doesn’t match your words.
I appreciate the honest reviews but gotta say, I'm getting a little disappointed. I'm visiting Vietnam next month and I've been watching your videos and I feel like we have a similar outlook of what kind of things we want to experience and see but so far other than Da Nang I'm not getting great authentic vibes. Looking forward to seeing places you truly enjoy!
Don't get discouraged. Different strokes for different folks. For what it's worth, Hoi An is one of our favorite places on earth. Stay outside of city center near a rice paddy and be equal distances to old town and the beach. Save money, sleep well at night and enjoy the delicious local cuisine!
Probably Bangla Road in Phuket is more suitable for him where he can find many pubs and clubbing, lady boys, live band entertainment and caberat shows.
@@WheresWes interesting. From what I have seen Hanoi doesn’t look too appealing to me and lots of honking bikes and lots of congestion but I can’t knock it till I try it.
The click bate worked for your shit short video, you can't express an opinion on somewhere you visit for a 30 min afternoon stroll, you should get yourself a boyfriend or girlfriend and go back at night time.
If you were disappointed with Hoi An, then you would be bored of all historic towns in the world including those in the States (Mackinac Island, Galena, Portsmouth, Newport, Saint Augustine, Jim Thorpe…)
I think you went with a negative thought and view so it becomes like that. Approach it with open mind and you shall enjoyed at least somewhat. Maybe you just have different taste or expectations.
Man, I saw this Hoi An video, and I felt tele-transported to one of these super-touristy places in the Meditarranean. For sure Hoi An might be beautiful building-wise, but I hate the superficial and touristiy atmosphere, and that you see more foreigners/tourists rather than locals. I like to feel the authenticity of places, like you do when you go to non-touristy places of Latin America.
