I have memories of being in a lower-middle class family in Baltimore as a kid. Not one of the cooler kids but wasn’t a loser necessarily, kinda dorky, weaker. I was lost. A lot didn’t make sense. I was with the friends I had at the time; we just stayed in the neighborhood and would fuck around like everyone else. Sitting on the roof at dark in the little ghetto, nowhere-important town that we lived in smoking paper, trying to be cool lol. Being introduced to rap and all the artists that I now frequent daily and love. This song would come on; I didn’t love this song then like I do now. But I liked it. We sat there sometimes in silence, just taking in all of the being nowhere and being everywhere feeling we’d get. So many thoughts in such a small space. All the daydreaming we did. All the things we didn’t know. I wanna cry sometimes but I usually can’t make myself go through with it for some reason. This makes me happy, but it hurts because you realize things about yourself by looking back on what you were, and what you are now. Wondering if you are now who you should be.
I’d wish I could hear this for the first time again - but for me, every time kinda feels like the first time bc this song never gets old. Its perfect from start to finish. I wouldn’t alter a single frequency for fear of ruining something too good. As a new rapper and producer myself, seeing great songs like this get created by veterans makes me excited for what the future has to offer for my music. I’m only going to get better.
