The layout is much better in this version and the shark is much more convincing. I like the wide open water instead of the congested version they replaced this with. Either way the Jaws ride always will hold a special place in my heart and it kills me to know they tore it down.
I consider myself lucky to have ridden this original ride twice...it was broken almost 3/4 of the time we were there. Sad the technology was so sketchy it freaking rocked. Always liked it when the shark blew up :-)
Different theme, different tone, different boats, different sharks, different show scenes from the boathouse onwards. The 1990 version of the ride was ambitious and more faithful to the original film, but was built by a group of former Disney Imagineers who were hopelessly out of their depth and didn't have the experience or the resources to make their concept work reliably enough to turn over to park operations.
I remember when I was little, me & my family did the majority of the line twice in the same day & both times as we were getting close to ride it, the line stop moving for a while & then they announced that the ride was having technical difficulties.
There's a big long video called like the jaws ride documentary that like a half hour long that some guy explains it all. Like the original ride malfunctioned so bad they sued the people. Then they ran into financial troubles in 2005 of the oil situation in Iraq . How they had to have a petition to get it reopen. They even got Roy Schneider involved at one point. In the original ride I think the sharks already in the boat house they do not so it on this version.
This right only lasted a couple of years, WAY better than the junk we have now. The shark here looks so real, it drags and rolls its eyes like a real shark. Guts and stuff explode at the end too. WOW.
I wish they would've ran with the "shark directly attacks the boat" concept. I always had an idea for the Jaws ride where the shark lands in the boat/grabs it with its mouth and causes it to start sinking in the water, until the skipper jabbed it with something and it slid off the boat. That would've been terrifying!
I wish Universal would change the ride back to this version just for a little while. After going to universal and riding the previous today version,i get tired of watching JAWS get barbequed all the time. Its really old and tell you the truth i never got to ride this version before ever.I was like 1 year old when it first opened.
the best part of this version is shark swimming, it's head popping up and then it going back under, THAT was pretty real looking, otherwise the newer version is better
there were problems with the mechanics.Due to the complexity of the effects, the attraction broke down frequently, resulting in an extended closure as Universal Studios attempted to repair it.
There's acutal was a some kid on UA-cam that actually made posted a documentary about the jaws ride. He said in the video That they had so many problems with the ride. Due to all the money it was costing them to set off a fire explosion every day. All the other problems they had universal studios actually eventually sued the people that designed the original ride for them. It closed down peremetly earlier this year.
@silverthehedgielover The special effects were hit or miss, no pun intended. The ride system now is no better to be honest, but tech support has more control over it- also, the red chunks coming up looked REALLY cool, but over time it made the whole lake red and chunky and it just looked bad, along with plugging up the filters. Great concept, poor execution.
It opened with the park but they closed it by 91 when i was there and there was a big sign that said under construction. the Jaws attraction was a big part of the early promo's for The Park before it opened so you can see how an 11 year old me was like wtf when i went there and it wasnt opened.
Wow no kidding. So did I. The first time I ever went on the JAWS ride in Orlando I had nightmares for a week. I'm a huge shark freak and being so close to a Great White Shark that looked so real scared the hell out of me.
Was the music on th boat itself of was it projected from speakers somewhere else or did you add it in... Either which way,,, It still looks like an awesome ride!
The water on the ride today is only about two feet deep except where the shark is, there it is dug out so they could hide the shark futher down but still sometimes if u look u can just see the faint outline of the sharks nose before it lunges at you because it is only a foot under the water while waiting and ur boat rides on a track.
We never got to ride it, since all the rides have big lines we didn't want to waste more time there. We just taught next time, but the next time we went it was the version that is there today.
What was the lifespan of each version. From what years? When was the ride first introduced? What does your last sentence mean? I'm having trouble following. The 1990 version was good you say, but wasn't mechanically engineered well enough for approval?
The ride was never moved, infact most of it is the origanal ride except the end where they just changed the unreliable parts, unfoutunatly the sharks were too complex and had to be rebuilt and simplifyed :(
I see that this is an ancient post, but this is the original version of the ride that was plagued with technical problems and was eventually closed shortly after it opened. The version that opened in 1993 was the replacement version that was totally redesigned from what this version was.
hey Baltimora1957, I was in the ocean and a tiger shark came in and nearly ate me. That was the scariest moment of my life. If hadnt been for a nice size wave I would of been shark food.
what original jaws riding training video to see the whole thing this cut out what happens inside the boat house. Also captain quint died in the movie so the original finale does not make since chronologically with that off the movie. I swear jaws was middle 1975 not 1974. I think jaws 2 was 1977 three was like 1981 revenge was 1986.
oh yes i see why this ride was unreliable not enough special effects plus the shark looks smaller than today's ride where the shark is bigger and scarier plus i noticed in the 1990 ride there's no shark in the boat storage
They must have closed it after this, remodeled things with the shark & whatnot, & then reopened it. If you ask me, this one was more like the movie, seemingly more realistic, & they should have kept it this way.
man! the original jaw in this ride...seem soo realistic then today ride..i could'nt tell if that was a real shark...well now..you could tell it looks fake anyhoo...why did they have to remove it!!! i wanna ride the original one..
the only time i went was in 92 i was nine years old, total dream come true but I found Nickelodeon studios anti-climactic but Jaws wasn't opened for some reason and I was pissed but judging by this video the ride then seemeds pretty crappy
Not really scared of many rides at amusement parks, but sharks are so damn scary.. Don't know how well I would take this one. ( o _ o) Or the new one in fact.
Jesus god, I can't believe entertainment used to run that ride. He's beyond awful. Of course, the script IS pretty bad. "How'd everyone like the ride?" Jesus.
lets think, if a grenade is shot down a shark's throat, what is going to happen? it is going to explode, if it is inside a shark, do you think he'll be fine? no...
wow, the shark is so weak compaired to now! i wasnt even born then! its funny to watch this now, hehe. now days theres like 30000 more buildings and such, and no fire lol
the newer ride in orlando is much scarier, shark much bigger, and it comes out more... half onto the boat!!!!!!!!!!1 believe me, this is nothin the new one is scary
wow i never new dat they had dat lol i like the new 1 but wen the shark "drags" u i fink dats better! shuld ave kept dat in! like as the fire starts it culd look like it drags u into it! wuld b cool!!!
It's a shame that this version of the ride didn't always work properly, otherwise it would've been amazing.
Yeah imagine
The layout is much better in this version and the shark is much more convincing. I like the wide open water instead of the congested version they replaced this with. Either way the Jaws ride always will hold a special place in my heart and it kills me to know they tore it down.
It was technical nightmare that almost never worked, that’s why they changed it.
Ngl they could make another jaws ride in another state of USA if there is a universal carnival
Still in Japan
Marty McFly -
Theheroneeded Willette yeah I know, it’s just a shame
Wow I remember watching this video a lonnnngggg time ago, so glad it’s still up!
I consider myself lucky to have ridden this original ride twice...it was broken almost 3/4 of the time we were there. Sad the technology was so sketchy it freaking rocked. Always liked it when the shark blew up :-)

Bdhdthdhehejejdheu ehhe
I like the bit with the shark pulling the boat around and the shark blowing up, but the current one is a little more exciting.
Am I the only one who would be terrified if I fell into the water?
It's_Magic 2003 I agree...
Mimi Mae really? He fell in that blows
There was a guy who fell into the water in 1990 tho
Holy crap it actually HIT the boat!
I wish I was born earlier simply to ride this version or Jaws the ride at all
I remember when I was little, me & my family did the majority of the line twice in the same day & both times as we were getting close to ride it, the line stop moving for a while & then they announced that the ride was having technical difficulties.

The shark also looks way cooler in this version.
Yes yes it does

this ride made me cry .. my dad took me on it when i was like 5 .. it so scary
my husband and I were on this in june of 1990
the best part of this version is shark swimming, it's head popping up and then it going back under, THAT was pretty real looking, otherwise the newer version is better

The machine kept breaking down mostly due to the explosion of blood. That effect took a toll on the ride and kept screwing the ride up.
We’re gonna need a bigger boat I always wanted to say that
It opened with the park but they closed it by 91 when i was there and there was a big sign that said under construction. the Jaws attraction was a big part of the early promo's for The Park before it opened so you can see how an 11 year old me was like wtf when i went there and it wasnt opened.
i have a question is the boat they showed that was sunken still at the new version
Wow no kidding. So did I. The first time I ever went on the JAWS ride in Orlando I had nightmares for a week. I'm a huge shark freak and being so close to a Great White Shark that looked so real scared the hell out of me.

Awesome version. I don't remember it that way.
i used to love this ride when i was about 10
Never experienced this version. Only experienced the latest version. I like the latest version.
How was this ride different from the version they replaced it with? Please compare and contrast.
We never got to ride it, since all the rides have big lines we didn't want to waste more time there. We just taught next time, but the next time we went it was the version that is there today.
was the lagoon larger back then?
Oh and I believe some locations such as the beeches and barges were a bit different
What was the lifespan of each version. From what years? When was the ride first introduced?
What does your last sentence mean? I'm having trouble following. The 1990 version was good you say, but wasn't mechanically engineered well enough for approval?

When I went there in '92 the ride wasn't even open. So I wonder how this was made when the ride apparently wasn't even opened until I believe '93.
If hadnt been for a nice size wave I would of been shark food.
the newer ride where the shark dies at the end is referenced in Jaws 2 .
Go you have a link? i came here looking to technical info on the old ride system.
This is the ride I remember as a kid. Scared the shit out of me
Wait this was the oringinal ending for the ride?
@HereComesTreble23 I'm sure 20 years later they could now do that without any of the complications.
It was said that nothing worked properly when the ride was first opened. I don't know but if you ask me it lookes like everything was working alright.
This is the one I remember as a little boy I was 6 then.
I think I like this version better, but since I only rode the new version, it's hard to say.

wher is this england??john
The dialogue of the skipper was different as well as some of the effects most notably the shark animatronic
From 1993-2000 when I used to visit FL 3 times a year, everytime I came to this park this ride was closed 2 of the 3 times. good ride though
The shark looks just as real to me, but its not as scary as the other one. The other one shows its teeth and all, which is terrifying.
How was it different? This version was sloppily designed by guys who didn't have the first clue what they were doing.
I don't understand the difference in rides. I didn't know there was more than one. Not familiar on the history. Please do tell.
Are you serious? I thought the ride got it from Jaws 2. Were the writers of the movie seriously inspired by this ride?
How was it too unreliable?
Was this recorded with an Iphone?
It’s a footage from 1990
oh yes i see why this ride was unreliable not enough special effects plus the shark looks smaller than today's ride where the shark is bigger and scarier plus i noticed in the 1990 ride there's no shark in the boat storage
great quality what did you use to film this your nans toaster
They must have closed it after this, remodeled things with the shark & whatnot, & then reopened it. If you ask me, this one was more like the movie, seemingly more realistic, & they should have kept it this way.
yeah, it changed around '95
@guitargeek616 it broke down repeatedly, having to be evacuated at least once a day
I don't think Jaws busts through it in this version
the shark doesn't like duck, he prefers chicken. a duck would be perfectly safe
wow that was better than Jaws 4!
man! the original jaw in this ride...seem soo realistic then today ride..i could'nt tell if that was a real shark...well now..you could tell it looks fake anyhoo...why did they have to remove it!!! i wanna ride the original one..
the only time i went was in 92 i was nine years old, total dream come true
but I found Nickelodeon studios anti-climactic
but Jaws wasn't opened for some reason and I was pissed but judging by this video the ride then seemeds pretty crappy
this version looks so much more realistic, the new one is lame with all the random houses and a church, and the new sinking boat looks really cheap.
Pretty cool. Thanks for sharing.
been on this loved it 2 bits :P
One ear only, try to redo this in HQ and have sound come through two ears.
that is so short of a ride
you got a video of the ride when it actually worked
I can see moagor differances in the original one. One, where the heck is the gas dock!? Second, people like powerlines man!
this is from 1990?
thats because sharks roll their eyesback hen they bite, the white is a layer called the nictitating membrane
Not really scared of many rides at amusement parks, but sharks are so damn scary.. Don't know how well I would take this one. ( o _ o) Or the new one in fact.
the shark looked beeter then, and the ending was better too
yes it is
This one Sucked compared to the one they have now
they should make a swimming with jaws ride
no it's in florida
I would be see fucking awesome if they had a mounted .50cal, even if they were blanks or just shot bb's that would be so tight.
Jesus god, I can't believe entertainment used to run that ride. He's beyond awful.
Of course, the script IS pretty bad.
"How'd everyone like the ride?" Jesus.
lets think, if a grenade is shot down a shark's throat, what is going to happen? it is going to explode, if it is inside a shark, do you think he'll be fine? no...
just like every other ride uve been on b4 :D
why
wow, the shark is so weak compaired to now! i wasnt even born then! its funny to watch this now, hehe. now days theres like 30000 more buildings and such, and no fire lol
@Ionisus They should try putting in a REAL shark and see how it would react to it.
thats so funny, they have music playing to highten the suspsence
"D-did I get him? D:"
"No. :/"
this ride is wack without the explosion they definitely have improved this one
こっちの方がリアルですき
2:26 Boathouse.
Never saw it hit the boat -_- could someone get a time
@Clay3613 They could, if the JAWS budget actually existed :(
the newer ride in orlando is much scarier, shark much bigger, and it comes out more... half onto the boat!!!!!!!!!!1
believe me, this is nothin the new one is scary
only part better was shark blowing up in the 1st one with the blood
wow i never new dat they had dat lol i like the new 1 but wen the shark "drags" u i fink dats better! shuld ave kept dat in! like as the fire starts it culd look like it drags u into it! wuld b cool!!!
I wonder if anyone ever brought a real gun and shot the shark? BOOM HEADSHOT!
