What a wonderful time I was hook line and sinker in love with EQ and still play but the first few years were so wonderful. The real fear you felt when people were leaving a raid and you were a class that could not gate and needed a ride. The pain of losing hours of experience being naked and praying you got back to your corpse before the mobs respawned. The fear you felt in the tunnel from Halas as a night blind Barbarian in complete darkness with goblins beating you to death as you tried to make your way out of the tunnel to go to a new zone. Good times indeed.
There were other MMOs before this that gave it a pretty good headstart, but MMOs didn't get REALLY popular until EverQuest came to be. This is the game that inspired many future MMOs.
This was peak cozy gaming for me man, there was just something so comfy about gaming in the late 90s especially with everquest. Playing games with people online was still novel and unique which definitely added to it, but the 90's atmosphere was also a key factor and there were so many awesome nights spent grinding away on EQ staring mindlessly into the crt monitor.
Have you tried Project 1999? It's a classic emu server that's free and it only goes up to Velious, so no AA's and no easy travel. At peak it has over 1,000 players on, it's amazing.
Ya, I played on Phinigel server a couple of years ago... created an Ogre Warrior and actually had a blast grouping and raiding. Ended up quitting around Planes of Power TLP opening up... the grind is so terrible. I'd play again but, with a less AA and gear dependent class.
People don't realize how advanced this was for the 90's. There was nothing even close to this when it came to multiplayer games. They invented the mmo with this. Yeah there were other mmo's before it but they created the format that was followed by WoW and many others since then.
I'll never forget the day that a group of assholes took over my cutpurse/bandit camp in Paludal Caverns. I had already set up and was camping there for several minutes, had full claim to it. They saw I was soloing it, /no-i-dont-think-so'd me and proceeded to kill everything I'd claimed while laughing at me and mocking me. I called on my friend, a legendary level 60 Druid named Karrotkorn. He promptly showed up, summoned his horse, and proceeded to run the entire zone, dropping level 1 spreading swarms on mobs as he passed by. He returned about 15 minutes later with a train of about 200 monsters. The dicks that stole my camp were blissfully unaware of said train since they were dead in the middle of a big fight with the bandits. Like a movie, my friend cast one of his portal spells, disappearing from the zone RIGHT as the train caught up to him. Without pause, they went straight through him and IMMEDIATELY started attacking the assholes that stole my camp. One of them tried to run, the others tried fighting, but ALL OF THEM were dead within 60 seconds. I sat there laughing my ass off, then returned to farming the bandit camp. My friend came back to the zone to make sure they weren't going to mess with me again, but they learned their lesson-- quickly looting their corpses and moving to find a different camp. Those were the days.
@randomguy8196 EQ1 character design was really nice for its time, at least pre-Luclin. Some of the Luclin character designs were wonky, some were nice. EQ2's character design was awful though. It had no charm to it at all. And it did not age well!

Everquest was the best MMO that ever was or will be. This game in the trailer looks kinda cool too. lol Is the Troll/Ogre the only real class models they actually used for this vid?

EQ1999 was awesome. Take this example: You play a druid. Maybe a Halfling. Your adventures take you to Freeport. The guards like you and everything's chill. You gain a few levels and you can turn into a wolf. Because you move much faster, you stay in wolf-form all the time. Your adventures take you to Freeport--where the guards f*cking KILL YOUR ASS. Why? Because you're a goddamn wolf! What else would they do? "Oh, we have women and children in this city. Let's allow this wild wolf to run in. NOT!" Compare that to Age of Conan, which I loved. You play a Stygian Necromancer. You go to Conarch, a Cimmerian village. Cimmerians are northern barbarians who fear magic and strangers. You show up there with a small army of zombies following you, and the guards...don't react. "Right, in you go. Our women and children love the undead." If EQ designers had made AoC, you would not have set one black toenail in Conarch Village!
Actually wolf form was broadly used for its ability to remove race from the faction equation and have access to quests you wouldn't otherwise have and walk freely around guards who would normally kill you. As long as the deity you worship wasn't absolutely hated you could remove the factor of being a dark elf orge in wolf form.
I love EQ and it's my favourite MMO and some of my best memories of all time were in this game, but I don't like that pretty much everything in the trailer isn't stuff that you can actually experience in the game. Just a bit of a hate of mine, when a trailer of a game shows you a bunch of stuff that isn't possible, or doesn't happen, in the game.
I tried this game recently and it was honestly pretty hard for me to get into. But the funny thing is, I tried both the retail and the p99 version. The much older version is somehow much more appealing. I found the lack of tutorials, far more enjoyable than the annoying and absolutely horrid tutorial you get in retail. (Just for reference, I tried the toad race only in retail and I didn't play much before deleting it. I may have missed out on some quality gameplay, but it didn't manage to hook me with that intro)

@@jeanmichelexactitude9362 I've heard people say that the 2022 TLP servers were a bit of a bust. I burnt out on Yelinak when Kunark released. I was in a guild that was losing leadership to WoW's Wrath Classic server and couldn't find a consistent group to exp with, so I quit. But I was having fun up until that point. This opening cinematic still gives me goosebumps. I would love an EverQuest reborn. EverQuest 1: Lore, classes, cities, boats, etc. Plus: Palia's graphics, updated (but charming, not realistic) character design with added customizability, a modern questing system, New World's crafting system, WoW's auction house and mailing system, and proper mounts. (But nothing absurd and over-the-top that it breaks immersion.) Oh God, that would be the most perfect EverQuest game.
Nah, everything up through planes of power was great. After PoP is where EQ fell off. But honestly, nothing was going to stop WoW from taking over anyway. So its fine.
Man these old models...I'm so glad they updated these later on. The game is still active through Daybreak games, and has a decent player base. You can also do pay per month, and it unlocks servers that are progressive, or just do up to Plans of Power, for example. A lot is easier, such as wizards not having to get all of those runes, and the exp seems to go quicker as well as the AA grind.
The world where I grew up. Whenever I see everquest videos it's basically like watching my childhood, even though I played it in highschool. I feel like an alien and norrath was my home planet or something. These games were the best back then, and tbh everquest 2 was WAY better than WoW in EVERY way imaginable, but people are just too stupid and all flocked to WoW because it advertised better. If I could go back, I would have showed them 1 by 1 how much better eq2 was. I would have done everything I could go bring people over from WoW...god that game was awful compared to eq2.
It's not doing well, and it's not dead. It's basically a very small niche community game at this point. It has very few new players, but it has a devoted community that still makes the game profitable. 'Claws of Veeshan' was released less than a year ago. One of the original devs recently said in an interview that EverQuest was and still is SOE's most profitable game ever, when you take into account how much they actually invested in it. It made SOE a ton of money over the course of its life, and it continues to be profitable. The devs basically want to keep the game alive, in some capacity, forever. Because of the devoted niche community, but also because it's a huge part of online/PC gaming history.
I never understood why people felt the need to write "pst," like, are you *not* going to sell me something or join my group if I offer it to you in OOC or wherever? This opening cinematic still gives me goosebumps. I would love an EverQuest reborn.
EverQuest 1: Lore, classes, cities, boats, etc.
Plus: Palia's graphics, updated (but charming, not realistic) character design with added customizability, a modern questing system, New World's crafting system, WoW's auction house and mailing system, and proper mounts. (But nothing absurd and over-the-top that it breaks immersion.)
Oh God, that would be the most perfect EverQuest game.
Pandemonium Zen pvp...bring back the old PvP I'll play again. ..&).
I miss the old Everquest days. after they started changing the cities and zones it became less fun
This wasn't a trailer though. This was the intro video when you launched the game.
Most hours played would be this game...
Never seen this video before.
I'd do it all over again!
🤩
Luclin down right ruined everything.
Luclin was what pushed me away from EQ, myself.
Nah, everything up through planes of power was great. After PoP is where EQ fell off. But honestly, nothing was going to stop WoW from taking over anyway. So its fine.
@@kyo3124 wow was trash too, so sad.
That sounds terrible. I'd rather get the real EQ experience on p99
Awesome. When it comes to women and games, I love easy.
@@mr.h4267 You mean boring.
*Not Gameplay Footage*
You can't tell me what i'm seeing when I play the game!
Best MMO of all time
No gameplay footage wtf?!
This game still alive? Doing well?
Dead. But Pantheon (made by Brian McQuaide's team) is coming soon.
EQ project 1999 is alive and well old school style all he way.
Game is still going
@@brandonjenner3178 dead server
TRAIN INC FROM CRUSHBONE LOL WATCH OUT!!!
Don’t forget those lower guk trains lol
@@jamesroe8159 lol, oh man, those were the days 😂

I never understood why people felt the need to write "pst," like, are you *not* going to sell me something or join my group if I offer it to you in OOC or wherever? And if you missed my message, of course I was going to send a /tell... Just always seemed like a stupid/unnecessary thing that people did
Shame we don't get a true to life tlp ala p99 that goes to PoP.
I think a Agnar ended at PoP
Why there is no emu for eq2 classic ?
Because it wasn't a very good game?
I came here because I watched another video where a guy killed himself because of this game... Wanted to see what all the hype was to make a dude off himself over this game... It was some top 5 video game addiction death videos
train to zone "qoute Karnos castle"
Lol thank god I didn’t watch this before I started playing... this is horrible. But I have played this game since 1999 and still love it but game play sure has changed since 1999. Much more challenging back then and you were forced to group play now everyone has 100 alts and only group with themselves. Still love it though
