- INTRODUCTION:
Leonid Ivashov, a retired COLONEL-GENERAL and political analyst, urged the two sides, US & North Korea to reach a diplomatic solution to the tensions, which have been ramped up in recent days by both the president and the dictator.
Mr Ivashov, in an interview with Russia Today, said Pyongyang’s threats of bombing the US territory of Guam was “a bluff”, and that the US could easily blast any North Korean missiles out of the sky even if it did attack.
And he called for both Russia and China to intervene now and impose further sanctions on North Korea, in a bid to take the conflict “out of the military perspective”.
Discussing the prospect of war between North Korea and the US, Mr Ivashov said: “It’s a total mismatch.
“The US is a superpower, while North Korea is a small regional player. North Korea can’t compete with America on any level.”
The US’ superior technology meant it could locate all of Kim’s weapons factories and missile sites, Mr Ivashov said, and “eliminate everything that North Korea created in terms of medium-range and long-range missiles and nuclear production”.
Neither would North Korea’s anti-missile defenses be any match for the American B-1 bombers, he added.
The former military leader, who today is head of the Academy of Geopolitical Problems, admitted North Korea might be able to inflict “some damage” on the US, but this would pale in comparison to the havoc wreaked by America’s military might.
On North Korean threats towards Guam, Mr Ivashov said: “To some extent, it’s a bluff on the part of North Korea; an attempt to save face and avert the American blow through international rhetoric.”

B2 SPIRIT BOMBER
B-2 Sprit is America’s most potent bomber because of its stealth characteristics. It has a maximum speed of Mach 0.95 and range of 6,900 miles or 11,000 km.
The KN-06 is a long-range SAM that bears some resemblance to the Russian S-300 and Chinese FT-2000 is the most capable North Korean air defense system.
But even this system is not capable of detecting the stealthy B1 Spirit.
AMERICAN SATELLITES INTELLIGENCE & NACENT MISSILE PROGRAM
It is agreed by most experts that the recently tested HWASONG-14 could reach many US cities, marking a significant milestone.
But North Korea’s missile program has still a long way to go
US also has solid intelligence on other military site of North Korea like the airfields through satellite imagery and will be able to target them with multitude of options at moments notice.
MISSILE DEFENSE SYSTEMS
A missile launched by North Korea will have to deal with multiple missile defense systems
1. The Aegis Ballistic Missile Defense System is a United States DOD (Department of Defense) Missile Defense Agency program developed to provide missile defense against short to intermediate-range ballistic missiles.
2. The Patriot Advanced Capability-3 (PAC-3) designed by US is a significant upgrade to the original system, and dedicated almost entirely to the anti-ballistic missile mission.
3. THAAD is designed to shoot down short, medium, and intermediate range ballistic missiles in their terminal phase.
4. US mainland is also protected by Ground-Based Midcourse Defense (GMD).
OBSOLETE MILITARY
North Korean navy has about 810 vessels, which in theory could seem a threat but in practice is no more than nuisance.
North Korean navy is considered a brown water navy and operates mainly within the 50 km exclusion zone.
On paper the North Korean Air force possesses more than 500 combat capable aircrafts, but almost all of them are outdated and even includes Chinese derivatives of very old fighters like Mig 17 and Mig 19.
North Korea has more than 1.2 million active soldiers, and a further 7.7 million in reserve, making its ground force one of the largest in the world.
But the troops are mostly ill equipped with outdated weapons of Soviet era.
The rest of Pyongyang’s armored corps is in a similar predicament, making them distinctly inferior to U.S. and South Korean forces.
LIMITED RESOURCES
Sustaining a war effort requires massive reserves not only in men, but also in material.
Not only will the relatively poor inventory of ammunition will dwindle down in few weeks but also will the food supply.
With these two basic items in short supply, the North Korean forces will not be able to continue fighting for long periods.
It is also foreseen by many experts that as the war turns against North Korea, many will start deserting the repressive regime, hastening the process of capitulation.

It's no doubt the U.S. and Allies could beat the Norks but doing so fast enough before Seoul gets pummeled is the question.
N. Korea is reported have thousands of artillery rounds containing sarin, or nerve gas, and anthrax. That could be a lie but, a country capable of building atomic weapons could easily develop chemical and biological weapons. And, Seul is within artillery range of N. Korea. old redleg
Biological and chemical weapons programs have been going on since the 60's. Some reports indicate stocks of plague, cholera, smallpox, 13 bio agents in total. They may also spread these with agents at large airports which some reports have indicated. They have the worlds third largest stockpile of chemical weapons including VX. If they could deliver that is questionable but only a small percentage of that could kill millions. Bio and chemical weapons on medium range missiles against Japan is a pretty scary thought.

Perhaps Ivanov should advise Russia to not supply the new missile rockets they've been using since October of 2016. That would be helpful. These rocket engines are Cold War era originally produced in Ukraine and in warehouses throughout Russia. While old for Russia standards, they are wonderful for North Korea. So yeah how about he advise on that.

Colonel General Ivashov has done his homework and has the intelligence that would be the envy of any other great nation. Rick Smith - Well obviously you don't know much about warfare and geopolitics. The main reason why Russia and China won't want to get involved is because they would be commiting suicide by going to war with the US. There is absolutely no good for either of them to go to war with the US over North Korea becaue both would lose and suffer tremendously. Why would they want to go to war with the US over North Korea to begin with? it makes no sense because NK is nothing to either of them. China is the the only one that would have an issue because they wouldn't have NK as a buffer from the US and South Korea. But there is still nothing to be gain for either Russia or China going to war with the US because they already know they can't win.
Most civilians don't realize that the US alone is around 100 to 300 time more powerful than Russia, and even more so than China.

The small amount of functional missiles that north korea, if they are even able to reach us mainland, have little chance of bypassing the missile defence systems in south korea and north america. You're talking about outdated trash vs the most modern missile defence systems.

Get your facts before you call "rubbish".
Every Swiss male is called up and about 2 in every 3 found "suitable" for military service. (Those unsuitable still have to do national service but in non military roles). Service is also accepted from women volunteers. At the end of regular military service they transfer to reserve status till age 34, older if they ever reached officer status.
Reservists keep their weapons at home, so Swiss have far more guns than the NRA could even dream of, but in the context of a "well regulated militia". Until recently reservists kept ammo at home, at the expense of their taxpayers, which might seem a bit socialist if anyone but the Swiss did it.
So if you include reservists they have the biggest percent standing army in the world. And as the gentleman said, they outnumber the British Army if you include reservists on both sides

A cousin of mine was a Marine who was involved in the Battle of Chosin Resorvoir when the Chinese came south to give their Korean Komrades a hand. By the thousands and thousands. Once they had the American troops surrounded, and cut off, the "human wave" assaults began. The Communist Chinese would gather all the local civillians they could, and drive them in front of their advancing troops. Men, women, old folks, and children. They didn't give a warm water shit, either. The Marines and US Army troops had to shoot those poor people in the efforts to defend their positions and themselves, and it was as near a hell as ever there's been on this world. My cousin was seriously wounded by a Chinese mortar round, but made it out with the rest, when the weather cleared enough for air support to be brought to bear, allowing an orderly march to safer area. His flesh and bones eventually mended, mostly. But his mind was damaged for the rest of his days. Actually, the original concept of missile defense is seen as an electronic wall. The DEW line, which stood for Distant Early Warning system was known as 'the fence' and 'the north wall'. So what you are saying is actually not far from the truth. It's not a solid concrete wall, but an electronic one. Israel's 'Iron Dome' system uses elements of this as well. It's not as far fetched as you may think.

The U.S. aircraft that you referred to as a B1 Spirit is the B2 Spirit. The B1 is known as the Lancer and is a supersonic bomber, while the B2 is subsonic and exhibits stealth characteristics.

Per T pesc Bear in mind, if not for the US's large military budget that your country (Norway) would be a Soviet territory right now. And it's only 3.5% of our GDP by the way. World poverty certainly cannot be solved by handing out money. The best tool in the history of the world for ending poverty is the free market, which has raised 50% of the world out of abject poverty in the last 40 years. The United States citizens have built something worth protecting, you should not be surprised that they are willing to do just that.

(Its inability to carry nukes was the main reason for it being chosen to deploy to the area. Since it does not pose a threat to China or Russia)
